View Full Version : Wearing the vistitors jersy at a football game.
Timmy 10-21-2002, 08:21 AM This is never really a good idea. Especially when your in cities like New York, philly, CLeveland or other places with rabid fan.
I can see Cabbie now wh his purple jersy (probably wh his name on the back) challenging the whole crowd to a fist fight.
JoeyBoots 10-21-2002, 08:30 AM It's confrontational and if you do this and get your ass kicked it is your own fault. Cabbie should feel lucky that getting thrown out was the only thing that happened to him.
Dan the Song Parody Man 10-21-2002, 08:44 AM I'm always a big hit at MSG with my Devils jersey for a Devils/Rangers game! It's even rougher around playoff time, but that hasn't happened in ages, due to the fact that even with the highest payroll in the NHL, the Rangers rarely make the playoffs. The Rangers have beaten the Devils whenever they met in the playoffs, but I won't go into that...
Ba Ba Jewey 10-21-2002, 11:14 AM I've done it. Worn a Dolphins jersey to a Jets/'Fins game in the Meadowlands.
Even had pictures taken with Jets after the games while wearing it. I apologized to Tony Eason (Jets backup QB at the time) about the jersey, and he said, "Hey, nothing to be sorry about. Your guys played great today."
I'd never wear an opposing team's hockey jersey to Madison Square Garden though. I've seen Islander and Flyers fans get bear poured on them and get into fistfights.
Fenwick3 10-21-2002, 11:55 AM I was watching "Outside The Lines" on ESPN this weekend, and the whole show was on obsessive fans and wearing visiting jerseys into hostile stadiums. The whole first part was about an Eagles fans who wore one of their jerseys into Redskins stadium three weeks ago. Philly won 37-7 and on his way out, he got knocked down by some drunk Redskins fans and cracked his head--the guy's jaw is wired shut and can only eat stuff like creamed corn.
It can get pretty crazy, who would have thought it would come to this?
Doctor Ivan 10-21-2002, 12:26 PM I confess, I've been guilty of this more than once.
Now that I'm older and the world has become even more violent, I'll leave my Jersey at home if I'm not in my own stadium.
Timmy 10-21-2002, 01:45 PM Ive done it at college games, but there you have the relative safety of a vistor section.
Heres a tip, just wear a grey sweatshirt with your teams logo on the front. You can still suport your team and avoid being targeted from behind by some beer swilling drunk who could otherwise spot a rivals jersey 10 sections away.
ThrowItInHerAss 10-21-2002, 01:52 PM You gotta either be ignorant to the hostility or just have a set of brass ones to wear the opponents jersey at the Meadowlands for the Jet games. In the section that I sit I've seen people get stomped, pegged with shit, old ladies getting cursed out, all kinds of entertaining shit.
I also had the pleasure of witnessing the little Cabbie debacle yesterday. Half the stadium was giving him the "asshole" chant as he was getting escorted out by security.
FUGLY2 10-21-2002, 01:52 PM I think in some cases it's totally fine-like when I'm living in Toronto and the Yankees are there, it's almost like a Yankees home game. But in New York it's not the smartest thing to do-but if it's an NFL game? That's just stupid, or passive-agressive confrontation. Take people that are worked up by noon, have already been drinking in the parking lot, combined with the only real, and still legitimate, sport where big guys hit each other and the continuation of drinking...
Just stay home and repeatedly throw yourself down the stairs.
Craig Mack 10-21-2002, 02:15 PM I am a regular at Giants Stadium...whether a Jets game or a Giants Game. And as some of you know, I'm a big 49er fan. Everytime I've been to the stadium when the niners were visiting, I've worn a niner jersey, with the exception of 1 time I wore a Joe Montana Kansas City Chiefs jersey. I've even been to games where the niner werent playing, and I'll still wear it....You get yelled at a whole lot before, during, and after the game, but when the 49ers win (which the usually do), its always a nice feeling walking around with the winner's jersey on....
Funny, I hate the Jets, I really hate the Giants, but Giants stadium feels like another home for me...the smell of foot long hot dogs, beer, hot sausage, popcorn, and piss is like none other....

I fit neither category, but I will say that when I wore my Dolphins jersey in the Meadowlands in the late 80's/early 90's, there were almost as many Dolphin fans in the stands. I will also admit that I kept my jacket closed most of the game.

I guess the Yankees are a different story (unless you're in Boston). I've worn my Yankee shirts for Yankee games at Shea and at Camden Yards, and have never had a problem.

I think a big part of it in a lot of sports is how legitimate the 'home team' is. Like-Shea, Camden Yards and especially Skydone don't have a team in a way. And fans at Shea this year would be best served keeping their mouths shut after the seaon long display that teamput on.
FJackie44 10-21-2002, 04:17 PM New Yorkers get a bad rap for having rowdy, ignorant fans. The truth is that New Yorkers are one of the most intelligent and tolerant fans out there. When the Jets played the Broncos in the 1998 AFC championship (at Denver), Wayne Chrebet's sister had to be rushed to the hospital because shit was thrown at her.
Also, do you ever see any riots or violent celebrations in NY when one of the area teams wins a championship?
FUGLY2 10-23-2002, 05:23 AM That's absolutely true-everyone has 'a friend' that has been at some sporting event in New York where something bad happens.
The place that should have the reputation of being a shit-hole is Philly. Wearing a home jersey isn't even safe if the home team is having a bad game. And I'd sure as hell never go to an Eagles game given the history there.
But on the positive side of things-I think back to that Doger's game (I think was the Dogers) where some moron fan grabbed a player's cap and wouldn't give it back and the fan got his ass kicked by players. I'd like to see more of that.
Ba Ba Jewey 10-23-2002, 06:23 AM Fact is, that there has never been any rioting, no overturned/burning of cars or shit like that after an NYC championship victory (except maybe in Washington Heights, but burning cars is a daily occurence there).
On the other hand, it has happened in Detroit, LA, Chicago and elsewhere, not to mention college championships.
In the end, most NY fans are true fans of the team and knowledgable about the sport. We're not sitting there saying, "Oh it's nice entertainment.... Do they run the bases clockwise or counterclockwise?.... Pass the sushi, Muffy."

Philly fans....are crazy....
Fenwick3 10-23-2002, 11:49 AM No doubt, the meanest fans are in Philadelphia. And not only towards the other fans! These are the same people who, when JD Drew demanded a trade out of Philly, in his first game back in the Vet, fans threw BATTERIES at him until they had to clear the field. And at another game, Eagles fans threw snowballs at the Giants bench, and the G's defensive coordinator got knocked out from one.
And FUGLY, that Dodger game was pretty funny... a Dodger fan (in Wrigley Field in Chicago, no less), took the hat off the relief pitcher sitting against the wall right in front of him, then slapped him in the back of the head, and the whole bullpen beat the shit out of him. That was actually pretty funny... :)
ihateyou 10-23-2002, 02:02 PM i live in oakland and go to a lot of raiders game, and we give it to the visitors fans worse than anyone out here. most people with visitors jerseys get yelled at and half of em get their ass kicked. raiders fans are a violent crowd, last game i was at i saw about 5 fights just in the few sections surrounding me.
Imus'_Collapsed_Lung 10-23-2002, 02:12 PM I wore my Browns jersey at the first Browns/Ravens game in Baltimore back in 1999......the first game for the "new" Browns against the "old" Browns. For the most part, my group was treated pretty well...just you're usual heckling; nothing too bad. Afterwards, we had people buying us drinks at a local watering hole. But again, it all depends on where you're at.
I distinctly remember a Monday night game against the Bears here in Cleveland in the late-80's. A guy wearing a Bears jacket was treated about as poorly as anybody I've ever seen....poor bastard.
Just know where you're at. New York? No. Philly? No. Denver? Sure. Oakland. Forget about it.
dave hounshell 12-14-2006, 01:59 AM I have lived in Phoenix for 27 years and have always been a Bengal fan. I was excited when we finally got NFL in Tempe. I've worn my Bengals gear to 3 games against the Cards. Everytime I get a whole lotta shit from the fans. Like they have ever any room to talk trash about any other team....please. I get laughed at when I go into a sports store in a mall and ask to see what Bengals stuff they might have. Again like they have any room to talk...amazing!!! Last summer a clerk told me they don't carry any Bengals at all because they are not a very good team and then a girl sincerely asked me who they were and that I was the third guy that week that had asked the same question. Fuck Cardinal fans!!!!!
MLBoros72s 12-14-2006, 02:04 AM Wore a Michigan jersey to Paul Brown (Bengals) Stadium...I got more "Go Blue" hollered at me than anything...remember kids..the trick is to wear a different sports jersey...can never go wrong.

Wow, u waited 4 years to reply this thread, that has to be some kind of record...
Anyway, I was at the 49er/ Packer playoff game a few yeas ago. There were a shitload of those Cheese head costumes walking all over the place. They were treated with great respect, I don't think you would see that accross the bay in Oakland.
I don't recall many major fights or anything after the game.
In the old days you could see plenty of fights at the Stick when the Dodgers where in town, especially in the cheap seats.
phillyballer 12-14-2006, 04:57 AM Ultimate NO NO is to wear a Cowboys jersey to an Eagles game. You are just looking for a fight. It has calm down since the Vet got tore down because those were really die hard fans that were willing to go to jail over a damn game. I wore a Cowboys santa hat a couple of years ago and I didn't get any heat from that. But if your decked out in cowboys colors and your up in the nose bleed were security is minimal, look to get in some shit.
The Big Gunk 12-14-2006, 07:43 AM I used to wear my Bengals jersey to Three Rivers for games. Definitely got comments and heckled a little bit, but never any threat of physical violence.
Now I just drive to Cincy for the games, but I wouldn't even consider wearing an opposing jersey to any event here in Philly.

I've gone to a few Ravens games this year and have to say people who wear other teams jerseys will get some shit talked to them. If you wear another teams jersey just grin and take it and you'll be fine.
biancas tick 12-14-2006, 11:58 AM That's a lot of Balls- OMG - He is gonna get Beers and shit thrown at him- seen it happen
at the Pontiac Silverdome- and by the way- I know the Lions suck-the game is so boring- we used to make paper airplanes out of the programs and they had to stop the game once to clean up the field :D
biancas tick 12-14-2006, 12:06 PM But you would never see the game on TV- because it was always blacked-out around here by the Great Lakes
Troy Smith is going to Detroit - I hope/ we'll see :p
biancas tick 12-14-2006, 12:15 PM I am proud to brag I saw Dan Marino play at the Silverdome-- He is so tall and fast
and We saw more Dolphin Jerseys that Game in Detroit :D

I remember hearing the Cards get booed as they took the field against the Raiders the last time Oakland came to town.
Shocker54 12-14-2006, 10:53 PM whats weirder is when the game is on a neutral field and you got groups of both teams fans in sections.
elway0798 12-15-2006, 12:30 AM Back in the days of good ole Barry Sanders when the Lions actually got to the playoffs every once in awhile coached by *cocaine* Wayne (fontes). I'd be at a Geen Bay Det game and see people throwing cheese and shit like that at anyone with a GB jersey on even a kid about 11 to 13 years old was gettin hit by it 2 rows in front of me.
In the early 90's we blew a lead we had all game in the playoffs at the Silverdome to favre with about 1 min left. On the walk out I remember seeing somebody wearing a GB jersey then saw a mob tackle him and a brawl break out cops and all were involved crazy shit at the old dome.
Even tho he retired in 99 I wouldn't go to a Lions game with my Elway jersey on got to think ahead on that shit. Cause some ppl take that shit to heart
K_Vick 12-15-2006, 12:41 AM I wore a Vikings jersey when they played the Steelers in Pittsburgh in the Preseason this year..... I got yelled at and shit thrown at me the whole time.... Steelers fans are fucking assholes!!!!!!!!!!!!

beer is being thrown at college football games??
i just attend Big Ten games at UM, MSU and tOSU and can't say i've seen anything remotely happen like that in 30+ years.

I was at an Eagles/ Redskins game at the Vet in 1983 , I think. The guy who was the unofficial mascot of the Redskins made the mistake of wearing his Chiefs suit to the game and taunting some fans. They kicked the shit out of him and broke his jaw. The next week I was in Washington at RFK for the KC Chiefs/Redskins game and our seats were right behind the KC bench. The guy who was the mascot was sitting in a wheelchair with his jaw wired shut and his fancy suit and head-dress had been replaced by some lame halloween costume that looked like a pair of pajamas
His buddy told us he would never go back to Philly again. Now thats thinking for you.
The behavior is over the top. They start tailgating at sunup for a 4:00pm game; so that by kickoff a lot of the fans don't know if they are in South Philly or the South Pole.
phatt316 12-15-2006, 07:27 AM it is always nice to see,but you must be polite and root for your team without beeing a ass/or get your ass kicked
stlbubbamark 12-15-2006, 10:28 AM I have a Terrell Owens 49ers jersey that I occasionally wear if the Cowboys are playing on a Sunday night...
I think TO could be on Team Heaven and playing against the Devil's Team, and people would still give me shit at sports bars for wearing a TO jersey.
Of coarse, I expect that when I put it on... If you're gonna go in a hostile environment, wearing a hostile outfit, you should anticipate problems. Carry a stun gun.
otherone4life 12-15-2006, 02:51 PM In Philly, you WILL get a beat down ....guaranteed
stlbubbamark 12-15-2006, 04:01 PM In Philly, you WILL get a beat down ....guaranteed
I was the happiest guy in the world when TO went to Phili. I already had a McNabb Jersey, and thought it was great. I quit wearing my McNabb jersey when TO caught his 100th TD and the eagles didn't even mention it. Bullshit. Now, my McNabb jersey hangs in the closet - the same place McNabb's will be be hanging for the next 9 months...
I don't blame McNabb for what happened, but Andy Reid should have known better than to get in a plissing contest with the best reciever in the game.
With that said, it's very impressive what he has created with limited offesive talents. Just goes to show that had they kept TO happy, they might be undefeated this year, instead of needing to punch-out the rest of the schedule to make the playoffs.

The game I wore Bengals stuff was only three seasons ago But the occurance of the clerks in the sports shop at Arizona Mills Mall was just just last summer. All I have to say is come on now!!!!! Chad who Carson who???? they sell sports nfl gear. If I was their manager I'd fire their asses. Just saying
bazookahead 12-17-2006, 01:30 AM it's like taking a call and talking to a former girlfriend in front of the new one... you're just asking for it... but in all discussions of fans, I think there's philly fans and everyone else... they are cheapshotting, classless scumbags on all accounts and I wish matt millen, isiah thomas and dan snider in all their futures...
sincerely,
santa claus
xtxguyx 12-17-2006, 07:23 AM I TOLD YOU NOT TO BE STUPID YA MORON
joetissirius 12-17-2006, 08:03 AM This is never really a good idea. Especially when your in cities like New York, philly, CLeveland or other places with rabid fan.
I can see Cabbie now wh his purple jersy (probably wh his name on the back) challenging the whole crowd to a fist fight. i've had plenty of people at the linc with other jerseys on. they never got beat up or threatened. when veterans stadium was called home, if you dared to wear one, that's a whole different story.with the license fee you had to pay at the linc, and the cost of season ticks, you have a lot to lose if you become an asshole fan.
Deric 12-17-2006, 08:30 AM I do that all the time. I wore my Eli jersey to the Monday night game in Jacksonville a few weeks ago. I wear my Mets jersey's to all the Florida Marlins games I go to when the Mets come in. There's a bunch of pussy fans down here and for the pre-game its 75% Giants or Mets fans, and the stadium doesn't fill up with home town fans until a few minutes into the game.
lampkinsr 12-17-2006, 08:38 AM Whenever the Cowboys play Carolina I go to the game in all my Cowboys gear, but the Panther fans are pussies and don't say anything. I think it's retarded to fuck with someone that is wearing a jersey from another team, at least not until your team has won.
stlbubbamark 12-17-2006, 09:13 PM As a guy that's only walked away from a hand full of fights in my entire life, I'd have to say there are only a couple cities where I would worry. Phili is the top of the list. I'm not afraid to fight, but if I was to wear my TO jersey to an Eagles home game - even if I could hold my own, people would jump in based on wanting to hit the guy in the Owens jersey. They are a different breed, and it would be a stupid move on my part.
I wouldn't wear any jersey of a team playing against the Raiders in Oakland. Not only would I get jumped, my body might disappear. Fuck that.
I've been in fights at hockey games - they usually end with evictions or people buying beer for each other (at least before the strike they did). Baseball fans are pussies (once you get outside of the Sox-Yankee thing). Still, baseball fans have a certain amount of respect.
smokebomb 12-18-2006, 12:05 AM You don't have to worry in Charlotte. Look at the highlights from today's Panther/Steeler game. There was more black and gold in the stands than Panther fans. Same way for the Cowboys Sunday nighter this year. Real corporate feel in Charlotte and you can wear whatever you like.

I think most newer teams have respect for the "game" as a whole. A lot of established teams (especially those who are starved for a championship) get angry at outsiders at their home. Eventually, there will be a mutual-respect factor league-wide (except in certain markets or hard-core fueds - a minority). Until then, you just gotta weigh your options and be careful what you wear... Or, expect a fight...
whiskey talker 12-18-2006, 12:31 AM the giants game today was ridiculous. it seemed like half the stadium with eagles jerseys
PMSDoll 12-18-2006, 08:15 AM I am a Ravens fan and I have gone to several away games. I always wear my Ravens purple and I expect to hear crap from the home fans. However, I respect the fact that I'm in their house and I don't taunt or heckle or say things to the home fans and therefore I haven't been in any major fights in an opponents stadium. I can't imagine going to a Ravens game (either home or away) without wearing purple.
CrazyLocoDude 12-18-2006, 04:14 PM I have and would wear my jersey as a visitor. I go to Browns games when they are in san diego and wear my Browns jerseys. Nothing happens. Realy the only problems here are the raiders games
Deric 12-27-2006, 04:07 PM the giants game today was ridiculous. it seemed like half the stadium with eagles jerseys
thats the problem with a long standing franchise. All the same assholes have had the same season tickets for 50 years. Now that they're all 100 years old they don't give a fuck and sell their tickets to outside fans who pay the $500+ etc. for them. Hopefully a lot of the peopole should be dying off soon so the younger generation of fans can buy the season tickets and actually go to the games and cheer for the Giants.
Mosedogg 12-27-2006, 04:15 PM I am a dolphins fan (yeah i know...bullshit season) anyhow, I am going to the Colts vs the dolphins this sunday in indy. My wife and I will both be sporting dolphins jerseys. wish me luck. If i get my ass kicked i will take pictures and post them.
irish_na 12-27-2006, 04:20 PM I was at the Orange Bowl in 1995 when Nebraska won it's first National Title against the Hurricanes..and we were lucky to get out of there alive!!! The only thing that saved us was there was about 10,000 of us..but they threw things at us...sucker punched people..ect..after the game...we went all the way back to Orlando to celebrate!! And I can hold my own at 6'6 320lbs..it was badd..plus the game was at the Old Orange Bowl in the worst part of Miami!!
Saul Hudson 12-27-2006, 08:11 PM I have been to serveral Jets home games and have seen people wearing the opponent's jersey. As long as the person doesn't act like an a-hole during the game and is just wearing the jersey, it looks like they'll just get some good natured ball busting.
guinness6 12-28-2006, 09:21 AM A friend of mine went to an Eagles game (in philly) last year wearing a black shirt and jeans. A huge drunk guy starts yelling at him "Where are your colors?!" etc. He said "I'm an eagles fan, I'm just not wearing any green". The guy said "well, we're going to be watching you, and you better cheer for the birds!"
