jdbnyc 03-16-2006, 02:15 PM I'm starting to freak out & it has been only 5 minutes. On hold with the warranty department for the company that makes it...

lubricantstick 03-16-2006, 02:20 PM My Sportster has been acting really weird. I hope it doesn't die. I expect electronics to work without problems, especially when it's only a few months old.
WildG 03-16-2006, 02:21 PM RIP Starmate.
badshirt 03-16-2006, 02:21 PM That sucks, bro. I bought 2 year insurance w/ Circuit City for $25. New Technology can be fussy - if my unit breaks within 2 years I get $150 credit for another one.
I hope the warranty covers it for you.
jdbnyc 03-16-2006, 02:21 PM still on hold.
freaking the fizuck out
I am going to miss tomorrow's show. ugh.
this sucks
chilez666 03-16-2006, 02:21 PM :bc: Im sorry for your loss.
cheesecake 03-16-2006, 02:22 PM That sucks man! Damn!
I have 2 Starmate Replays, an Orbiter, and a Sirius Connect unit. So, if one goes......I'm still okay... :D
Soldier 03-16-2006, 02:23 PM I bought a 4 year in store replacement package, that is refundable if I dont use it.
LargeOrange 03-16-2006, 02:27 PM still on hold.

I am going to miss tomorrow's show. ugh.
this sucks
It's only a Friday Show...
assmasterson 03-16-2006, 02:29 PM The cigarette lighter adapter on mine took a shit, so the only way I have been listening is at home using an AC adapter.
It sucks not listening to the show while driving in the morning...
dogue 03-16-2006, 02:29 PM Are you sure it is the unit and not your power source? I thought mine had died and it was just he fuse in the power cord. $2 for 5 fuses at Radio Shack and back to the show.
jdbnyc 03-16-2006, 02:31 PM OMFG. I am about to spit fire.
I have to send the starmate in and they will ship one back to me once they get them. They are on back order and 'should' be in on the 20th.
The warranty person was so matter-of-fact about it was on back order. I didn't get mad. I was calm. Just going to send it in & chill.
gahhhh
now I need a cigarette.
jdbnyc 03-16-2006, 02:31 PM no, its the power adaptor in the unit. I'm positive.
cheesecake 03-16-2006, 02:34 PM no, its the power adaptor in the unit. I'm positive.
Buy one of the cheap SIRIUS ONE models... $49 (Then again, for $30 more, you can buy a brand new Starmate Replay).
flavorflav 03-16-2006, 02:35 PM Same situation happened to me. I went to Best Buy & bought a new Starmate, did a reciever swap. When the warranty unit arrived, I returned the Best Buy Starmate (must be within 30 Days).
sinisterjay 03-16-2006, 02:38 PM no, its the power adaptor in the unit. I'm positive. did you piss on it again damn

Personally I've opened up my Starmate(non-replay) a few times to fix connections, as I use it pretty hard...I'd suggest taking it to a TV repair shop and asking them if they can see if the solder joints came disconnected on the power inside the box...it's a few minute fix.
KurtCocaine 03-16-2006, 02:42 PM Mine's been on since Christmas with no problems.
MsMaryJane 03-16-2006, 02:42 PM How long have you had the Starmate? I got mine in November (not the Replay one)....wondering if I should start to get nervous.
SoCalJeff 03-16-2006, 02:43 PM http://arc.0daymeme.com/Xz/tombstonejpg.XzGx8n7E6XeR0maANmZ0O.full.jpg
jdbnyc 03-16-2006, 02:45 PM I might try the open the sucker up & solder. if that doesn't work I am going to send it in.
ugh, this sucks.
as for whomever... if your shit is still working don't worry about it. it probably won't break.
steadfaststylee 03-16-2006, 02:46 PM How long have you had the Starmate? I got mine in November (not the Replay one)....wondering if I should start to get nervous.
I got mine in October, but I don't use docks or multiple receivers...I carry mine everywhere and hook it up Mcgyver style, so If you're careful should last awhile

Once You open it and solder you CAN'T send it back.
jdbnyc 03-16-2006, 02:50 PM gotcha... no solder. I'll be good.
I won't pee on the thing again either.

Funny that you mention that. I had that problem on my Starmate and my XACT unit (essentially a Starmate). I fixed them both by resoldering the four solder joints around the adapter plug.
In fact, I have to fix this again on my Starmate..
This seems to be a design flaw. The AC adapter on the Starmate is supported by a little glue and those four solder joints. Solder joints are brittle and will break if significant stress is put on them.
Those of you with Starmate Replay units - go easy while inserting and removing the adapter plugs...or it will crap out!
OjSbLoOdYkNiFe 03-16-2006, 03:08 PM yeah.. mine has been acting weird... it will go to aquiring signal then to antenna not detected.. i tap the connecter and it usally works.. even tho i may have to do it a few times..
it does it on both antennas i have so i don't know what the deal was..
and it used to lock up the display and then wouldnt let me move channels until i unplugged it.. and that went away hasnt done it in a few months.... weird.
drunkenjoe 03-16-2006, 03:12 PM That sucks man. The only complaint I have with the Sportster replay is that I'm now getting some static threw the fm modulator. Don't know how to get rid of it. If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks

I had that problem. If your FM modulator has a metal body or if there is any metal exposed on it, attach a wire to the metal and ground it to an exposed, unpainted metal part in our car (if you are using it in your car.
Grounding the unit removes the static and everything sounds clear!
Ssikdogg 03-16-2006, 03:17 PM :upset:
DellAbateMonkey 03-16-2006, 03:23 PM I had an Orbiter, a Starmate, and an S50 start to crap out on me within a couple months each. I called Sirius on the Starmate (the FM transmitter broke in about a week) as I did not buy the warranty from Best Buy and they sent me a new one through the mail for free in 4-5 days. The good news is I have a lifetime subscription and when they crapped out, there was a better radio for me to upgrade to, most of the time they did not charge me to switch my service over to a new unit (generally on a lifetime subscription they charge $75 to switch to a different receiver), but they conveniently forgot to deactivate the problematic receivers each time. Now I have one paid lifetime subscription and 3 radios that work off of it. I would suggest getting a cheap Sirius unit from Walmart until you get a new one from Sirius, they won't charge you to return it, as I think Best Buy will if you return it and it is not defective.
Codefal 03-16-2006, 03:27 PM that stinks!

Also- try a different frequency. 88.5 was noisy at home, but OK at work. I went to 88.7 and all was OK.
I needed to replace my Sportster Boombox about a month after getting it. I think the wrapping & unwrapping of the antenna wire caused it to open (break), so no signal was getting in. Radio Shack replaced it.
On an item like the Replay Sportster, I'd shell out for the add'l warrantee. All the plugging & unplugging, plus the unit runs pretty warm.

BrianZ 03-16-2006, 03:32 PM My Kenwood Sirius Connect just died yesterday too. Every station sounds like terrestrial radio does when the station is off 1 frequency.
I'm going on some forums to see what it might be.
steadfaststylee 03-16-2006, 03:34 PM For static, scan the FM dial for an "empty" frequency as much in the middle of the dial as possible....trust me it'll work ALOT better.
NedKoppel 03-16-2006, 03:44 PM It's only a Friday Show...
...a Friday Friday Friday Show.
ruggertheretard 03-16-2006, 03:54 PM yeah, if you open it and start poking around you void your warranty
BeerTruck 03-16-2006, 04:10 PM So go get another one
BoneHead64 03-16-2006, 04:13 PM Go to the store and buy a new one Mr. Cheapowitz.
BARNZsongwriter 03-16-2006, 04:13 PM Mine fell down the steps and I was shitting my jeans till I plugged it in and it worked.
BARNZsongwriter 03-16-2006, 04:13 PM http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f239/streetglide1/bfd2.gif
macheson 03-16-2006, 04:28 PM Sorry dude
spikedavis 03-16-2006, 05:00 PM Mine broke too-but I bought it at Costco and they take ANYTHING back, regardless of what happened to it.
solly 03-16-2006, 05:12 PM Im thinking i might put my Starmate Replay in a plastic bubble or something now...I'm afraid to even touch it! Are they really this fragile?? Mines about a month old
Sooner 03-16-2006, 05:13 PM My number 4 preset doesn't work on my Starmate Replay already. Makes me nervous about the quality of these units seing as how they were trying to rush them out as fast as possible.
twonabomber 03-16-2006, 06:15 PM Personally I've opened up my Starmate(non-replay) a few times to fix connections, as I use it pretty hard...
i've had to do that once. i removed all the old solder, clamped the DC jack in place, and re-soldered it. so far, so good.
it's always scary cracking into the case the first time, but now it'll be no big deal.
still phishin 03-16-2006, 06:34 PM My number 4 preset doesn't work on my Starmate Replay already. Makes me nervous about the quality of these units seing as how they were trying to rush them out as fast as possible. that sucks cause my #4 button is fucked up on my starnater replay ,but i am really rough on it and she holding up like a champ
havoc 03-16-2006, 06:37 PM Mine broke too-but I bought it at Costco and they take ANYTHING back, regardless of what happened to it. werd bought my shit at costco too. ill prolly return mine next year when da more baller units come it. lifetime return policy is for ballers
ywims 03-16-2006, 08:15 PM Sorry man. I got my Starmate replay from Costco's, so no problem returning it. Just getting a replacement so I won't miss the show would be the problem. Maybe I'll buy a backup, just in case.

...And the owner still pissed. :p
kingofmars 03-16-2006, 08:29 PM I had a starmate take a crap (from Radio Shack), they let me upgrade and pay the difference to the starmate replay.
Fury34 03-16-2006, 08:37 PM my starmate is starting to suck, everytime i go over a bump it turns off

comixxx 03-16-2006, 08:40 PM That sux big time. These things run to fucking hot and I am afraid it will happen more often as time goes by.
MsMaryJane 03-16-2006, 08:55 PM That sux big time. These things run to fucking hot and I am afraid it will happen more often as time goes by.
Turning down the display brightness helps alot.
cclemmons 03-22-2006, 03:25 PM I've had a Starmate Replay since Christmas, and I've had a couple of minor problems with it.
First, the built-in RF modulator clicks and pops which makes the audio almost unbearable. I had a separate modulator that I plugged in until I can get it hardwired into my car radio.
Second, the 12V adapter cable started to come apart (showing bare wire) right at the cigarette adapter. I had to crack it open and resolder it so it wouldn't short out.
It's high maintenance, but still better than XM.
