View Full Version : Who has a S50?
mybluox 03-23-2006, 11:43 AM Hi all,
My reciever died yesterday; so I went out and bougth the S50!
I was wonder what everyone thought of it.
I'm a little disappointed. I was told it would record up to 4hrs but it only does 2. Also it is very slow in transferring files.
I have ordered a portable pack for it. Hopefully that would be kewl. I'll be able to jog and workout and still listen to both Howard and Bubba.
copter 03-23-2006, 11:44 AM :hw: The RIAA totaly fucked sirius when they came out with the S50. It had potential but the lawyers got involved :(

horstoothjacass 03-23-2006, 11:46 AM Carefully repackage it before returning :D
Marianne30 03-23-2006, 11:47 AM I have it, generally enjoy it, but it is absolutely the buggiest piece of equipment I have ever owned. :(
copter 03-23-2006, 11:48 AM I can say I have no fucking clue how to work the record feature.. I read the book.. and I still cant get it working!
mybluox 03-23-2006, 11:50 AM Which receiver was it that died?
A 3year old audiovox PnP. I had a warranty on it from best buy.
So I got my money back and upgraded.
Not a bad deal.
artiefan711 03-23-2006, 12:01 PM i love the S50, ive had it for 2 months and cant imagine life without it. you can record 2 hour blocks but you can record back-to-back blocks so it doesnt bother me at all
WeT DOG 03-23-2006, 12:29 PM I can say I have no fucking clue how to work the record feature.. I read the book.. and I still cant get it working! :p noT hard big dog...just hit the heart icon... ;)
Fullof_ 03-23-2006, 12:39 PM S50 gets a lot of press both pro but mostly con. I have one on the West coast.. and it does the job. I wake up and have 4 hours of stern ready to listen to when I run with the Dog. Bottomline.. it has been doing the job.
Checkout the backstage/S50 FAQ.. its alot better than the manual..

Misskitty 03-23-2006, 12:42 PM I have the s50 and can record if I want. I am now using it to amplify through the house. Bought an amplifier a few weeks ago and run around with a small portable radio in my ear, this set up kicks ass now.

Then it tells me to push it again to set record start so I do it then it tells me to push heart to set record end.
So I do it when I want the recordign to stop. NOTHING HAPPENS.
EL_CHIDO 03-23-2006, 12:44 PM Yes, Sirius Backstage is an absolute necessity for the s50.
Lots of helpful people there.

For recording SHOWS you have to set the start and stop time.
e.g. Press the love button once "Set record Start" you then press it again or rewind for an earlier start and then press it again "Set record End" then fast forward button in five minute increments.
EL_CHIDO 03-23-2006, 12:50 PM Of course to record SONGS, you just have to press the love button once.

So I do it when I want the recordign to stop. NOTHING HAPPENS. Ahahaha...song by song is alot easier to recod than talk shows bro...I know exactly what you are talking about but Mine usually records them after i hit RECORD START.....I do have 1 MAJOR Problem tho...the fucker wont play like an MP3 player anymore man....NONE of my fucking recorded shit will play...if it aint live I cant listen...SUp with that COPTER? :(

That is exactly what I do, and it is working well now. You will miss a few seconds as the recording blocks are changing over, and with luck it won't be during any crucial bits (like Richard's waxing! ARGH!)
Do keep in mind - make sure you manually SHUT IT DOWN before taking it out of a dock!!! It gets royally f-ed up if you don't. If you forget, and it gets stuck on the open screen, shut down and remove the dock battery for a minute or so, then restart.
Also, if you shut down while pausing a saved show, you'll lose your place.
good luck!
Air Florida 03-23-2006, 01:30 PM my replacement S50 has worked well.....I dont even use my ipod anymore. still looking forward to a true portable though.
mjfiii 03-23-2006, 01:56 PM I have a 5-50 and LOVE IT! I set the record time every day and get the whole show and the wrap up. I listen to it throughout the day and then start again the next morning. On days when I am home, I listen live, otehrwise I record it and listen to it during my train commute home and at the gym. I have even taken to blowing off crap on TV and sit in my bed laughing my ass off listening to the show at night.
I love the S-50. I think people who wanted walking live radio were disappointed. I know there are two live walking players in the works, but the xm walking players sucked, so I hope they work out those bugs.
kfdodgerfan 03-23-2006, 02:12 PM If you have the s50 be sure to absolutely do a fireware update. A lot of bugs are fixed in those updates... though not nearly enough to please most s50 owners like myself.
That being said, I like the s50 but don't dig it like I do my iPod. The design and usability is just average and I feel they had to get one out there for Howard and kind of forced it out.
But it is a must have for people who live in the West Coast and want to go to the gym and listen to Howard in the morning. I record the East coast feed from 3AM-6AM EST and bring it to the gym and work. It is better than listening the the live PST feed because I can FF through commericials and other boring crap.

jimmyritt33 03-23-2006, 02:18 PM S50 is great for me, but with the new replay schedule I havn't found a recording schedule I like. I listen to the previous days show the next day during the 7am to 11 am hours. So in turn I record the 7 PM replay (no wrap-up show, ugh)
flowerfeeder 03-23-2006, 03:25 PM I love mine when it works correctly.
Too many bugs and malfunctions when recording.
Where's the new firmware?!

Hit the Heart Button, Then hit it again, then push the knob on your dock to the right and foward it for then amount of time you want to record and hit the heart again and your done.

That's not a bad idea. I really enjoy the S50. It gives me everything I want, but if it were possible to bookmark where you were previously listenening, it would be truly fantastic. I hate having to fast forward when I have to turn it off at 1:40.

Supposedly there will be bookmark features in the next firmware update, if we ever receive one. Word around town is that the next firmware update is delayed because Sirius is fighting with the RIAA (record companies). The RIAA wants the Heart button removed. Some rumors say they want it replaced with a Buy Now button. They are always looking for money. Bastards.
1SiriusSFfan 03-25-2006, 12:31 PM The S50 will be getting an update in the next week or so that will allow us to record 4 hour blocks at one time ( or so says the tech person I spoke with last night).

The problem with that is, if they don't include bookmarking, then a 4 hour recording block is actually a bad thing. Could you imagine having to fast forward through 4 hours? That would suck. I've been thinking about scheduling 4 one hour blocks instead of 2 two hour blocks. That will make it easier to jump around and find the last place I left off. If it works, maybe I'll even do 8 thirty minute blocks.
wbfox234 03-25-2006, 04:46 PM If you record howard on ch100 live bookmarking exist by hitting the foward button.

Sort of. Hitting the FF button will skip to the next point where the PDT Display message changes, but that's not always useful, especially during a long interview, like the one with Dice. It went on for 90 minutes, with the same PDT message.
bobdabldr 03-30-2006, 03:36 PM I've had an S 50 since November. I've come to think mine has ears! It seems o work pretty well most of the time..... until I try to show another human how cool it is! Then it hoses up!
If you don't mind regular issues to research and try to resolve it's OK.
If you ain't into constant tinkerin' ya might want to stay away.
mcgarrett 03-31-2006, 03:51 PM The S50 is the best thing going,it was the only way to go in the"PRE-REPLAY"days.Of course anything can use tweaking.
