Use a new layer for everything you do. It is much easier to correct mistakes and make changes if you have many different layers.

If I were doing that gif you did, I would use the smudge or blur tool to make the cut line less obvious

Play around as often as possible. Like anything else, the more you play around, the more you learn and the better you get.

Good job & have fun. If you have any specific questions, PM me, or ask here and I'll help you if I can, also, there are TONS of gimp tutorials on youtube. :)
