Howard Stern: No Return To Terrestrial Radio
May 10, 2006 10:01 am US/Eastern

(AP) NEW YORK Forget the various rumors and rumblings. Howard Stern made it clear Wednesday morning: He's staying put on satellite radio.

"I'm very flattered terrestrial radio can't let go of me," Stern said on his morning radio show. "But I would throw up if I had to go back. I'm never going back."

The self-proclaimed King of All Media said that three companies have made overtures through his agent, but there was no interest from his end. He did not name the companies.

Stern is just five months into a five-year, $500 million satellite radio contract.

"I've never been happier," Stern said. "We're flying high and doing great."

Stern told the New York Post in a story published Tuesday that he had been offered "a major deal" to return to regular radio.

The Post identified one of the prospective bidders as Citadel Broadcasting, whose chief executive, Farid Suleman, worked with Stern for several years at Infinity Broadcasting until his departure for Citadel in March 2002.[hr]
Calls to Citadel for comment were not immediately returned.

Stern made his comments during an on-air interview Wednesday with The Associated Press. The eternally audacious shock jock insisted on speaking with the AP about the reports that he might consider a simulcasting deal where he split time between Sirius Satellite Radio and a traditional outlet.

Stern competitors Greg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia recently made such an agreement with CBS Radio. Stern worked for CBS before making his move to satellite in January.

Stern said that Opie and Anthony's return to traditional radio signified their "failure" on satellite. And he reiterated his intent to continue his program exclusively on satellite.

"The story is I wouldn't do [terrestrial radio] for any reason," Stern said. "Not for money. I left because I couldn't stand the censorship. I couldn't stand" the Federal Communications Commission.

The FCC and Stern were locked in a long, pitched battle that led to staggering fines for the content of the shock jock's show.

Stern said he wanted to reiterate his commitment to satellite because of the growing number of reports that he could go back to terrestrial radio.

After cashing in his $200M in stock options why would he ever need to do anything that stiffled his creativity and talent again... It's so funny that they just keep putting him back in the press over and over.

So happy to hear Howard clear this up. I've been listening since Howard first came to San Diego and I loved the show. But, since he's been free on SIRIUS I am blown away by how much better the show is. If he did go back to "land-based" radio I couldn't listen anymore because now I'd know how much I was missing. That and I've spent so much money. :p Own 5 radios, have 5 subscriptions, had my house wired - but I am happy about every cent, it's worth it by far. Hey, I have a Tivoli and I have to say it is the best radio ever, definately worth the money.

Its nice to see this AP story, too bad I doubt most of the outlets that were jawing about this recently will bother mentioning it since they can't speculate over it.

I think he should for two months just to destroy CBS

The Opie and Anthony fans (all three of them) must be losing thier minds. They wanted to be able to claim that they "pioneered" being on both mediums at the same time. Like thats a good thing.

All this sh*t pisses me off... I can't stand how the media continues to lie to us!! It's disgusting... you can't believe anything on the news and I dont understand how no one but howard calls them out on it! I'm a stock holder and when BS news such as this is reported, the stock for no reason will take a hit!

Also, it's great to read the ap do that report but it doesnt show on my ameritrade siri reports, it doesnt show on yahoo siri stock symbol reports nor is it on msn stock symbol. Siri really needs to work on their pr...

There is no way Howard can ever do this!

#1 - It would be compared to Oral and Anally, making Howard look like he's following their lead (we all know the truth)

#2 - If I could get Howard for free then why Sirius? Plus would any non-subscribers sign up?

Thank God=Howard put all of this talk to rest!

I think it was a mistake yesterday when Howard put it out there that he was offered the same deal. The stock did definately take a hit because of that statement.

Wow, what a non-story. But, I would expect nothing less from the Post, the paper that said Gephardt would be Kerry's running mate on the day that Kerry announced Edwards. Shit journalism at its best.

sad that even though there is usually a negative spin on press for howard, they have to keep talking about him because there isn't another interesting radio personality anywhere. rofl

Howard can do whatever he wants. I'd still pay for his show. But, I do prefer the exclusion.

I'm glad he finally put this to bed. Now back to his regular programming! Live was great today can't wait to see it on demand. Watched the film fest awards today and it was well done like the Oscars. Cool to see pics from Robin's party on Monday's show now on In Demand. Gonna watch Artie's first appearance on the show which is in the vault tonight. :)

I am glad Howard cleared this ridiculus matter up. Anyone with half a brain could figure out that he would never do it. I have only been listening to Howard on the radio since he came to Sirius, because I don't live in a market that ever carried his show. Down here in the bible belt (the arm-pit capital of the world) radio personalities are a joke. Although I am new to the actual show, I have been a fan and supporter for years and I knew that Howard would never sell out like that. He has way too much at stake with Sirius. Plus, Sirius probably wouldn't ever go for it. They have him there to BRING subscribers. Free radio + Howard = less Sirius subscribers. Very easy equation.
Go Howard!

Stern's a genious. He played ALL of them. I would wager that he leaked the story about the possibility of him going back to testicle radio. By doing so, he put himself in a position to look like a saint to his fans by denying. More importantly is that he is now getting TONS of free national media about how he can put on a superior product where he's at. When he's in the national media people are signing up in droves.

They fence sitters that haven't made the leap and were considering staying content with O&A are now left to think that O&A couldn't cut it on XM and are offering up a watered down product. I know this seems like a Riley Martin theory but I think Stern's smart enough to play the media like that.

The media has no problem playing themselves. They don't need Howard to look like a bunch of idiots.

And yes, that is a Riley conspiracy theory.

I haven't even listened to regular radio since he came on in january. I'd almost rather him retire on top than go back to the old ways. Stuff like the sybian wouldn't even be allowed on regular radio. Now if they can only keep Blue Iris and Rappin" Granny off that thing lol

The only good thing about testicle radio is that Howard said"f'ing" instead of Fuck Fuck Fuck. It is not fucking funny anymore!

What happened to his own self imposed rule of minimal cursing?

Artie? Thats fine...I've listened to Howard almost 20 years now and it seems like he is different now. Trying to be like Bubba?

It is funny how the media today will just take a story and run with it with out even checking sources. Yesterday when Howard was talking about it he said no one ever called him to verify if it was true. Journalism is dead....Just hacks who want to get ratings with out checking the facts.
