Anyone know if Sirius intends to add ground repeaters like *cough* XM *cough*?

I tried my best to get the Sirius Boombox to work in my office, but as I don't have a window, it wouldn't work. But, the people in the office who have XM all get a great signal.

I called Sirius about this to see what I could do and they said that XM has ground repeaters and they don't which means for Sirius reception the antenna needs direct line of sight to the sky.

Kinda sucks because I'd love to listen to Sirius all day.

Anyone know if this is something they are going to add?

Not sure if that would change my problem but sometimes I get 3 bars in my room and then other times the thing is fighting to get reception, very annoying.

you have to move your antenna to a spot that has 360 view of the sky.

That would be great. My office is moving to a location in our building where I will not have access to a window. It's bad enough that I can't get On Demand, but to lose my Sirius while I'm wasting precious moments of my life that I will never get back at work is enough to make me want to quit!

I remember reading somewhere that it was gonna take a few years for it to roll out.

Yeah, Sirius reported they are spending a lot of money on beefing up their repeater network, but no clue how many that means or where they are. They already do have a lot out there, just apparantly less than XM does.

I had in pointed south next to a window and
it was constantly losing signal.
Then by accident it fell off the ledge and is now
in front of the wall below the glass and works great.

Go figure.

That'd be nice. Pulling up to the office and having to get out of my truck sucks, especially in the middle of a good bit. It'd be great to walk in to the office and keep listening.

i know that they have them around most big cities, and probably areas with high subscription rates. I work in retail security and our officies are ussually stuffed in the back of the store behind several feet of steel renforced concreate, i can't get signal but one of my buddies who works at another store can so i figure he must be near a ground repeater (Near Hartford CT).

I went and bought that boombox and spent an hour playin' with the antenna. Every direction, every angle and nuthin. The closest I could get was about 10 ft. from a window which was way too far.

Pretty fuckin' pissed actually cus I was lookin' forward to listeing to 100 & 101 all day.

I kind of thought that the repeaters would be necessary to get the true-portable radios to work. With no real antenna, you'd need a great signal.

I'm b/w DC and Baltimore, but I guess just too far from each to benefit from the repeaters in each city.

Miamifan...those links suck.
Try this link (http://www.DogstarRadio.com/sirius_map.php ) ....this is the one I use daily to find where the satellites are. It'll also show you on a map where the repeaters are.
Use your antenna aiming thing in the menu and point towards where this link tells you.
Also Slight...Sirius will be streaming Howard next month so you can get it that way...

A small battery powered (solar if possible) mini repeaters for like $40 or less would be great.

I have my boombox in an office down the hall. I turned on the FM modulator and transmit to a radio on my desk. I lose signal for a couple hours in the middle of the day, but other than that, it works well.

I wish they sold some kind of repeater/signal booster... I have my boombox in my room (which faces east) and have the antenna runnning through the hallway into the bathroom to get what little signal I can, I usually miss about an hour and a half of Stern's first airing due to lost signal.

XM does not have substantially more ground repeaters than Sirius. Repeaters are very expensive to install. I'm assuming they are currently in most of the major metropolitan areas (we have one in St. Louis and we're not a major market).

As the subs increase, they will probably increase their network. Just think of cell phone networks 10 years ago. Sprint PCS only covered the major highways in most areas. Now there's hardly anywhere that isn't covered.

I work in Hartford and get better reception in our parking garage than I get at my house!!

The fucked up thing at my house is that I have my antenna in the window (will be moving it outside permanently with the assistance of my 50' extension) and sometimes it cuts out. I will then put the antenna on the dining room table and I get a good signal....Makes sense....

After you put your antenna outside, as high as possible(on the roof if possible) and face it towards South Dakota skies, you'll have 100% reception all the time. It really makes a HUGE difference. You'll be very happy.

Yes, but what about the portability factor? Who the hell want's run 23' (or more) of antenna wire to listen to a "portable" boombox.

Yeah, the unfortunate thing is the boombox isn't very portable. Fortunately the car kit very very rarely ever gives me trouble.
