I would have liked to see the race finished to find out if the Busch brothers were going to take each other out. By the way, I don't drink Bud, it's pee water. I prefer Beck's, 7+7, or Jaegermeister. Nedophile for Life :bwtd: Captain Thunder 07-02-2006, 11:39 PM NASCAR News From www.captainthunderracing.com Tony Stewart is beginning to like the Daytona International Speedway. Allot! Stewart became only the second driver ever to win Daytona's summer race in back to back years. Stewart won the Pepsi 400 last year as he dominated the weekend and won from the pole. This year was not much different as he clearly had the best car all night and was nearly untouchable. David Pearson is the only other driver to win back to back Pepsi 400's. Pearson did it when the race was called the Firecracker 400 in 1973 and 1974. Crew chief Greg Zipadelli seems like he has finally figured out the high banks and the restrictor plate nightmare that is Daytona. Stewart and his crew are not the first team to struggle at the famed speedway. Daytona has been frustrating for many of the greatest drivers ever. Dale Earnhardt didn't win a Daytona 500 until his 20th attempt. Darrell Waltrip only won at Daytona once in his storied career. Waltrip won the 1989 Daytona 500 but never won a Pepsi 400. For a while it looked like Stewart might suffer the same fate. He burst onto the scene in 1999 and was the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year. But after the 2005 Daytona 500 he was still 0 for 13 at the most famous track in NASCAR. He had the Rookie of the Year under his belt, a Winston Cup Championship, and a Brickyard 400 win to his credit, but still no Daytona wins. Stewart acknowledged many times that winning at Daytona was at the top of his list of things to do before his career could end. Now with back to back Pepsi 400 wins only one more accomplishment alludes the two time NASCAR Champion. A Daytona 500 win. One thing is for sure though, Stewart and Zipadelli have indeed figured out the Daytona Speedway. There was no doubt in anyone's mind who had the best car Saturday night. Especially those in the front row that got landed on when Stewart decided to do a crowd dive after climbing the fence in typical Stewart fashion. "I made the mistake of going down the ladder," he said. "I thought there was a gate there. I didn't find the gate and was in the mosh pit for a while." "There was no way I was going to let those race fans down," he said. "It started here ... I was either going to get all the way up or I was going to fall off and fall on my butt. But I wasn't going to stop. "It was every bit as big, if not bigger, than it was last year." There were plenty of cars on the track that were fast in short runs. But no one was able to run upfront all night long the way Stewart did. He led 85 of 160 laps. Dale Earnhardt JR. led briefly, Jeff Gordon looked like he had a good setup, even Brian Vickers, Kurt Busch, and Boris Said looked like they might of had a chance to compete for a Daytona win, but it was really all about Stewart and the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet team. They were ready from the time their car hit the track on Friday when Stewart qualified the car second and they never looked back. Late pit strategy by pole winner Boris Said nearly stole the victory from Stewart, but after a restart with four laps to go, Stewart's #20 Chevrolet easily blew by Said for the win. "I felt like we had a better shot of getting around Boris than we would anybody else," Stewart said. "Not because Boris isn't a great driver, but he hasn't had a lot of experience on restrictor-plate racing and knowing what to do and what to watch for. "I knew some things I could do that he wouldn't be looking for." Jeff Gordon was attempting to tie the late Dale Earnhardt with 11 restrictor plate victories but got caught in a late five car wreck when rookie J.J. Yeley and Greg Biffle bounced off of each other to bring the final caution of the night. Gordon then lost his brakes and could not finish. After the race he was whining as he always does after a disappointing run. "It was getting dicey and crazy," said Gordon. "The No. 18 [Yeley] was backing up through the middle and I got to the outside and the No. 16 [Biffle] was going around him and there were so many guys that were getting out of control. "The guys were getting a little bit out of control there those last few laps and that's usually what happens when guys drive like that." "There were so many guys out there, and I want to bad mouth every one of them," Gordon said. "But I'm not going to. If I don't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all." Gordon was also seen giving the magic finger to teammates Johnson and Vickers. Something neither was happy about after the race. In a candid interview with Captain Thunder later that night in the Daytona infield, both voiced their displeasure. "He was flipping both of us off tonight, I don't know what is problem was but he flipped off me and Jimmie", said Vickers. Gordon added, "I definitely am going to have to go make some friends in the garage," said Gordon. "I think me and Dale Earnhardt Jr., neither one of us have any friends out there because there was nobody who seemed to want to work with us. That is part of restrictor-plate racing." Fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 13th and moved up to third in the points standings. Jr. led for a brief time and had the Daytona fans on their feet but never really had a chance as he struggled with a loose race car all night. Points leader Jimmie Johnson finished a disappointing 32nd and now only leads Matt Kenseth by eight points. Kenseth finished fifth and looked great all night. He said after the race that his team had a tremendous car. The Busch brothers, Kyle and Kurt, finished second and third. "I would have done anything Kyle needed me to do for him to go to Victory Lane," Kurt said. "What a brother," Kyle replied. "It takes two to pass Tony," Kurt added. Kyle's run helped move him up four spots in the standings to eighth. Meanwhile, Gordons DNF dropped him out of the chase for the championship and left him in 12th place. Next week it is on to Chicagoland for the USG Sheetrock 400 where Dale Earnhardt Jr. will try to defend his wis title. Earnhardt Jr. won last years Chicagoland race on pit strategy and was ridiculed all year for it being his only win of the season. Chicagoland is a 1.5 mile tri oval with 18 degrees of banking. Keep a close eye on the Fords and an even closer eye on the "now hot again" Tony Stewart. Written by Captain Thunder GuyLaDouche 07-03-2006, 10:32 AM Canadian on the pole. who woulda thunk it? I thought he was from Bakersfield?? Anyway, Thank God Tony broke the curse of Scott Salem!!!! GuyLaDouche 07-03-2006, 10:34 AM How awesome was it that Tony thought there was a gate at the bottom of the Flag stand to get back onto the track? That's why he jumped down into the crowd...lol..... Captain Thunder 07-04-2006, 01:13 PM PREVIEW OF THIS WEEKS CHICAGOLAND RACE NEXTEL CUP SCHEDULE: http://www.nascar.com/races/cup/2006/data/schedule.html "Chicagoland...My Kind Of Town" This week the Nextel Cup Series heads to the home of Jazz and Blues, Chicago. Chicago seems like a fitting place to be headed for the four time Winston Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon after a weekend in Daytona that left him 12th in the standings and out of the chase for the championship. Talk about feeling blue! Gordon's unfortunate luck late in the Pepsi 400 left him and his crew chief Steve Letarte reeling. Gordon was attempting to tie the late Dale Earnhardt with 11 restrictor plate victories but got caught in a late five car wreck when rookie J.J. Yeley and Greg Biffle bounced off of each other to bring the final caution of the night. Gordon then lost his brakes and could not finish. So is Jeff feeling a bit blue as he and his Dupont Chevrolet team heads to Chicagoland? Blue and bitter to say the least. "There were so many guys out there, and I want to bad mouth every one of them," Gordon said. "He was flipping both of us off tonight, I don't know what his problem was but he flipped off me and Jimmie", said Vickers. One man who is not feeling the least bit blue, is Tony Stewart. Fresh off of his crowd surfing experience in the Daytona grandstands, Stewart is excited about his chances to climb the Chicagoland fences this weekend. He is now 5th in the points standings and in a great position to make a run at a third Nextel Cup Championship. The Chicagoland track is a 1.5 mile tri oval with 18 degrees of banking and it will test the Chevy's recent dominance. Even though a Chevrolet has won four of the five Chicagoland races, the Fords have dominated each race only to succumb to bad luck finishes. The defending champion is Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the 2004 winner was Tony Stewart. Ryan Newman has also won at Chicagoland and Kevin Harvick went back to back to win the first two Chicagoland races in 2001 and 2002. Granted, the Chevrolet drivers are on a roll lately, with Stewart winning the Pepsi 400 and Jeff Gordon winning Infineon the week before. But my gut tells me this will be Ford's weekend and my Top 5 shows it. I had a great time with all of the Captain Thunder fans that came by the motorcoach in the Daytona infield to say hello and enjoy NASCAR's greatest track with us. Thank's to Jimmie Johnson and Brian Vickers for hanging with us after the race Saturday night, we had a great time with you guys! Also, a special thank you to Blair Minton, PR Director for Martin Truex Jr. and to Martin for spending some time with me on Friday during qualifying. I look forward to seeing you all at Chicagoland, my kind of town! Captain Thunder's TOP 5 For The 2006 USG Sheetrock 400: Carl Edwards Greg Biffle Matt Kenseth Tony Stewart Dale Earnhardt JR.
