View Full Version : Rejected(?) Howard Stern comic pitch art
cubicz 07-05-2006, 06:05 PM My buddy Jon Miller (http://millercartoons.blogspot.com/) and I (http://www.guerrilla-comics.com) have been Howard Stern fans for ages, so we figured we'd pitch to do an official web-comic for his site (with myself writing, and Jon drawing).
Unfortunately, after emailing them and Fed-exing them a hard copy pitch, we didn't hear back from the HS offices. It's been over a month, so I guess it's not happening. The webmaster of HS.com wouldnt even reply when I inquired about sending in a proposal. Anyone know how Kevin Lofton got his stuff on? Did he contact Don Buchwald? Friends with a staff member? I really think we could still do a bang-up job. Any help would be apprciated.
Feel bad for my buddy because he put in a ton of work. Hope you guys dig the unifinished story:

1glibby1 07-07-2006, 03:32 AM I think a Howard comic is a great addition to his legacy!!!
Very nice job with the cast and there comic personalities. You should look into selling this as a weekly strip, like Beetle Bailey. This would bring an unbelievable interest towards Howard and satelite radio. A sort of "in your face FCC", and remain in the public with everyday antics.

cubicz 07-10-2006, 06:25 PM thanks for the ego boost guys. I'm glad you dug e'm
KunKan 07-10-2006, 06:38 PM Hey,
The artwork is great. I own a comicbook shop and half the crap I sell doesn't look that good.
Also, if you could take some unsolicited advice, as a web-comic I'd look at a more traditional 3 to 4 panel thing. Take a look at Penny Arcade or Liberty Meadows (not on the web). I think it may work a bit better than you have it now.
In any event, please keep them coming. I'd love to keep reading them.
Oh, why don't you ask Mutt if he could do something with them here.
ciphe 07-11-2006, 09:47 AM that is awsome, very good work. that would be great to put that in flash and animate it. keep it up, lookin foward to see more!
cubicz 07-18-2006, 03:40 PM got a formal response from the HS camp. Mailed me a form letter saying they dont take solicited material.

dankster 08-17-2006, 07:54 AM these are great man! keep up the good work!
badbagel 09-01-2006, 11:04 PM Great cartoon! It keeps the spirt of the Howard Stern show. I would change Gary's eyes to look a bit small, compare to those big teeth and lips. The style reminds me of Clerks the Animated Series. Other wise, keep posting your comic and create hype by contacting one of the SFN staff and talk about a possible hosting idea or at least a plug on the STN boards if you are thinking about making this web comic a weekly thing. Unfortunately, you are going to have to create a lot of free web comics before the Howard Staff really takes notice. Good luck, you got great talent.
FlyMeWithBalns 09-02-2006, 05:35 PM great comic there, another idea, even if you could draw your comics based on a particular event during the week that happened on the show, you will be applying an image to what we heard and it could be exaggerated to the 10th degree!, great work!
Dupes 09-04-2006, 09:20 AM I think the comic is great the storie can get a lil edgier being online content but the richard chirsty Character looks amazin I dont know whats up with those guys on the site they reply to nothing.
It's too bad not many people have replied to this post.. I think this is great, and I do like your style greatly.. (though honestly, I hardly think that Ralphycakes would be that big in the upper-chest area,) and maybe if you guys (and I'm an artist too, I KNOW how much time this took..) but maybe if you volleyed some ideas, posted just like, a character sheet for everyone from the show, and like, asked on one of the forums for some ideas of what you could do a comic on.. I mean, shit, I'm not sure, perhaps something to do with the utter gay that is Sal and Richard-- BUT it boils down to me thinking that this is pretty damn good, and being terribly sorry that you got no response.. Sorry man, I feel for ya. <3
ffgooch37 09-19-2006, 04:31 AM The cartoons are awesome!!

Dude!
Honest appraisal from one cartoonist to another...
While your execution of the inking is crisp and professional looking, your abilities as a charicaturist need alot of work. It looks like you don't know what the people involved actually look like.
I appreciate the stripped down simplification of your style as all great cartoons function as calligraphy, logotype and haiku. You just need to study and play around with your subject's facial features more intently if you wish to capture their characters in cartoon form. Howard and crew are far from bland looking (your Fred is especially unrecognizable as Mr. Norris).
Work on your Charicature more and you may have a winner on your hands.
Believe me, I used to work in amusement parks drawing cartoons of total strangers for a living. If it didn't look like them, they wouldn't buy it.
So if you have any questions feel free to PM me. You got a good start, you just need to fine tune it!
protection442 11-17-2006, 03:51 PM Thats great!

cubicz 11-19-2006, 04:31 PM Hi Siobahn,
Although I'm a published professional artist who's worked in animation and comic books professionally, I am not the artist of the work above. But I will defend the style...
Please dont think i'm being argumentative, and you're comments are welcome and appreciated, but I think you're missing the point. These aren't charicatures or portraits so much as they are exaggerated and simplified representations. The style is so graphic, it's futile to go for an exact representation. the style is more akin to the cartoon Clone High which has younger versions of JFK, Ghandi, and Abe Lincoln in it.
here's a pic:

Are they exact? No. But when you see the thin indian guy, you know who he is.
SO when you see the guy that's really tall with john lennon glasses and the big beak, chances are, people know it's howard.
With that said, you have a right to your opinion. I thinkevery artist shoudl strive to get better and exhaustively study their subjects. I think Jon (who did the art) did a fine job. I know you dont think so, but thats okay. No one said it's perfect.
