I have an old Starmate that is ready to shit the bed and I see all these car radios advertising that say Sirius ready for like $149.00 installed say at Best Buy, etc. I was always under the impression that you will also need to have a satellite tuner installed in the car as well, is that correct? If so, then the ads are misleading as the tuner probably goes for $200.00, so I am looking at $349.00 installed to get Sirius.

Anyone have a car stereo installed that had Sirius already?

Yes you will need to buy the brain. Do what I did. I got a radio with a AUX jack right on the front and I run my sirius radion in that. makes it easy. My stereo is also sirius ready. But to get it to work I would need to buy the barin. I do not see why anyone would want a set up like that. I like the one I have it's so easy to take out and put in the house or other cars.

With the Starmate you don't need anything additional. The price sounds right. I never had mine installed as I use it in the house too. I just keep the car antenna on the dash. The unit works through your radio tuner and is very simple to use. Enjoy.

No, I meant instal a car stereo right into the dash of the car. Sick of wires and pluging the sucker in, rather just turn on the stereo and be done with it.

I did an installation with the Starmate but I use the FM modulator in the car (so I didn't have to mess with the stereo) and wired it to the aux power and an external antenna. I bring it into the house to use it the same way. Works great.

I put it in an overhead pocket so you don't see any wires when it's not there (although it always is when I'm in the car.) Yeah, I have to plug in the antenna and power, but of course, that's because I'm too cheap to by another unit.

If I did the work in my house, I could set up streaming on through my home network to my stereo, and then I could leave the unit in the car. I guess I just figured out what to do this weekend.

You need to buy the in-dash radio, which is actually a tuner. Then you'll need to add the brain, which is about $100-150. And the cost of a wiring harness and an antenna.

What kind of car do you have? Check Crutchfield.com. Their web site is decent. Then go to Bust Buy or Circuit City and find the best deal.

I purchased a satellite ready radio and then had to purchase a separate tuner at Best Buy. I had Best Buy install it and I have had no problems. The best reception you can get. It's best to let the experts install it. In my truck they couldn't go out the back brake light so they came up with an alternative that looks great and is guaranteed not to leak.

Could you do it yourself? Of course but to get a professional installation is worth it to me. You get what you pay for.

Sirius should at least let you have a few radios on a single subscription. A separate subscription for each radio is a ripoff. It makes it a real pain to take the radio in and out of the car.

From your link, the best buy definition of satellite ready:

Satellite Radio Ready An in-dash deck's integrated functionality to control optional satellite radio systems, such as those sold by Sirius or XM.

A tuner, antenna and subscription are required for a satellite radio system to be functional.

Looks like you'll need to buy a tuner (i.e. the brain).

I have a 2006 Ford that came "satellite ready". The stereo has a "SAT" button on it, but no satellite tuner. Basically, the stereo unit controls the "brain". I bought the tuner from Visteon for about 200 bucks and did the install myself. The tuner looks like an amplifier - about 2 inches tall, and about 5 inches x 7 inches in length and width. I installed the unit in the trunk and ran the wiring up to the in dash stereo. Can't see the wiring and you wouldn't know there's a satellite radio installed. Looks much better than having a starmate or other device sitting on the dash. Good luck.

Just do this. my Radio is sirius ready but need the brain. The way I have it set is the best way to do it. You have to do it line in if you live in a major city. There are to many damn radio stations and cant use the FM transmiter.
