Remember what this guy did almost 10 years ago? He turned one of the worst teams in baseball, the Florida Marlins into world series champions now the Tigers... who were once baseball's version of the Cincinatti Bengals but now they're in the world series. If this guy keeps his shit together, he can go on tour every year and turn shitty teams into champions so next year, he should go manage the Royals or the Devil Rays. Lets just hope the '06 Tigers don't pull a " '97 " like the Marlins and dismantle the whole team the next year..

It certainly helps that some of the high-priced free-agent acquisitions lived up to their potential and their pitching has come around.

Same thing could be said of the Marlins, too.

He's done good but the 97 Marlins team was bought and dumped in a fire sale after they won the series. Also if I remember correctly he never got Pittsburgh anywhere then again he had a juice free Barry Bonds

What specifically makes him so great in terms of team building? I am not real familiar with him and his legacy, I just know the teams he's rebuilt.

I think the Pirates made it to the NLCS a couple times with him, but I could be wrong.

Edit: Pittsburgh lost the NLCS in 1990, 1991 and 1992. I don't know if Leyland was there for all 3 or not but most likely.

Lets see how far he takes the Tigers and the "day after thanksgiving sale" the Tigers will have after they win.

Mike Illitch, the owner of the Tigers, will not allow that type of firesale. He is one of the best owners in sports, and is fully commited to winning.

Yeah that 97 marlins team was awful!!

I mean he only had players like Kevin Brown, Gary Sheffield, Moises Alou, luis castillo, mark kotsay, Livan Hernandez, Al leiter, Rob Nenn, Edgar renteria, jeff conine, cliff floyd, bobby bonilla, Alex Fernandez, antonio alfonseca..........

Yeah it was all jim leyland.................Prior to the season there was a ton of pressure on him to win that year. They did....but its not like they were a bunch of scrub nobodies.......

Neither is this years tigers. They are a great team, with an 80 million payroll.

The tigers will win the series this year, but its not because of the great jim leyland.

They have great pitching adn great hitting.

A manager and his coaches set a tone for the team, and that is part why the Tigers are where they are. The Tigers did have the pieces and they had good pitching but you need someone to manage that pitching. Look at Macha in Oakland. I here that he was misrable at managing the pitching staff, and hardly talked to many of the players. That is probably why he is gone.

There isn't one thing that you can totally credit with what happened in Detroit. Everything has to come together perfectly, but Leyland keeping the clubhouse loose, managing the pitching staff, and not allowing the team to accept losing, even a game, is a HUGE part of that.
