Cubs offense much bolstered by addition of Soriano, still looking for power from the outfield.
Jim Hendry is not done spending.
Cubs pitching is far from complete, expect trade of Westbrook, or signing of Meche, Maddux, or possibly Schmidt, not Zito. (a fly ball pitcher)
Many rumors still flying around, Hendry and the Tribune will raise payroll...to increase the value to potential bidders.
Thread will be updated frequently throughout the offseason, continuing throughout the championship year.

PicksForArtie 11-27-2006, 11:44 PM Bout time the Cubbies spent some money, unfortunately they spent it foolishly and have created a shitty market for all baseball.. WTG Cubbies!!!! Great management strikes again!!! You will continue to suck......
manny75586 11-28-2006, 12:09 AM Cubs have always spent money (they have been around $100M the last couple of years) they just end up with people who fizzle out unexpectedly or they just flat overpay.
I'd hardly say the Cubs created the shit markey. The Dodgers dropping as much as they did on Furcal last year and the money shelled out to A-Rod and pretty much any deal the Yankees have made the last 20 years have fucked up any sense of a market.
manny75586 11-28-2006, 12:10 AM P.S. Cubs win it all in '07 :D
thekev1130 11-28-2006, 12:56 AM the Cubs signing Soriano makes it all the more sweeter when STL kicks the shit out of them yet another season
ndhalogod 11-28-2006, 01:13 AM The healthy rotation of the Cubbies shall lead them to the promised land.
MillerTime8606 11-28-2006, 01:26 AM Yep make an arod type deal get one hitter and nothing else makes sense. Cubs aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

The TRUE official beer of the Chicago Cubs.
Fafafooey76 11-28-2006, 05:48 PM just offered Schmidt a 3-year 45 million dollar contract.
assume he'll wait till after the winter meetings and gets a dollar amount offered by the Yankees before signing with anyone.
would be good behind Zambrano, a ground ball pitcher who can go late into games, even though he's not the same as he once was.

Hasnt Jason Schmidt had arm problems in the past?? The Cubs and their background for ruining pitchers arms is a GREAT spot for Schmidt to go!!
thosefnguys 11-29-2006, 10:53 AM Hasnt Jason Schmidt had arm problems in the past?? The Cubs and their background for ruining pitchers arms is a GREAT spot for Schmidt to go!!
No, Schmidt is a great asset for the Cubs BECAUSE of his prior arm problems. We'll spend the money, just not on the players we need. And, we LOVE to pick up injured players who were once great [i.e. Garcia-Parra, etc.]
Until the Tribune Co. sells the team, I honestly don;t believe we'll have a chance.
:(

Fafafooey76 11-29-2006, 06:03 PM Until the Tribune Co. sells the team, I honestly don;t believe we'll have a chance. :(
the whole reason the organization is opening their wallets this offseason is to bolster the value of the team to sell it.
Colangelo, a chicago native, would love to buy them. :)

thosefnguys 11-29-2006, 09:05 PM Cuban's already made the Tribune Co. Offers in the past [I believe up to $500 mil]. Hopefully, they're broke enough for him to cash in.
BTW, Good point Fafafooey, about why the Tribune Company is opening up that huge wallet of theirs so wide right now.
I hope Cuban doesn't buy the team. He would prbly move them from Wrigley and that would suck. Coangelo would be a much better fit. He is from Chicago and Knows what the history means to the fans.
thosefnguys 12-01-2006, 12:40 PM I hope Cuban doesn't buy the team. He would prbly move them from Wrigley and that would suck. Coangelo would be a much better fit. He is from Chicago and Knows what the history means to the fans.
No way Cuban would move the team.
I like him because he understands how to be a fan. And that's what this team needs to win. The Cubs are too profitable, win or lose, so Big Business could give a shit if a championship is ever won.
Cuban would give a damn, and more importantly, if the Cubs won under him, it'd be another finger at Trump. He'd take us all the way within 5-6 years of buying the team.
thosefnguys 12-06-2006, 11:29 AM Maddux signs 1 yr contract w/ Padres, Options could net him up to $10 mil.
It's not technically "Cubs" news, but Maddux will forever be considered a Cub. He's done so much for this team, he deserves every fucking cent he'll ever make, and success on whatever team he's a part of.
Hopefully, he'll come back to Chicago as a pitching coach, once he retires. I don't see that happening, though, until the Tribune Co. is sold, due to the bad blood between him and that shit company.
Fafafooey76 12-06-2006, 09:12 PM well, Ted Lilly is aboard now....can't say I'm overly excited, hopefully with the Cubs potential for run support, he might be able to get 17-19 wins.....
in Hendry, we trust.
http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/topstory/sports/lilly_ted0608.jpg
Gil Meche would complete the rotation, or a far fetched possibility of Zito.
still be nice to get a actual CF also.

A.Lang=Crazy 12-06-2006, 09:16 PM 10 million a year for a guy with a career 4.60 era and 1 game over .500 career record. Start buying your world series tickets now this guy is great. Another guy that is a #3 pitcher at best and won't lead the Cubs to the world series. Be realistic you never heard of Lilly before the Cubs signed him and if you did you didn't consider him to be a top pither.
Fafafooey76 12-06-2006, 09:19 PM Be realistic you never heard of Lilly before the Cubs signed him and if you did you didn't consider him to be a top pither.
well, there are some baseball fans here, including I, that know who Lilly is, and although he isn't a top "pither", he will be a solid #3 starter.
Considering we need starting pitchers and not offense, it's not a bad signing.
Wait to see where Zito ends up, then think of our rotation. ;)
and besides, Zambrano is leading us to the world series.
A.Lang=Crazy 12-06-2006, 09:26 PM For the 10 million per year thats the type of money an ace makes not a guy with a career era over 4.50. I have seen Lilly pitch and he has decent stuff. He is a solid #3 starter, but don't start getting your world series tickets because of this signing. We all know and you know the Cubs will end screwing it up in the end and you will add another year to long years without a world series title. If you think you guys will sign Zito too then you are on something and I want to know where you got it.

thank god you talked some sense into me before I bought world series tickets.....
hopefully the Devil Rays will sign you on for a GM, you have great ideas.
A.Lang=Crazy 12-06-2006, 09:45 PM You would lucky if I was the Cubs gm. Anyway my Phillies just got Freddy Garcia for shitty Gavin Floyd who is alot better than Ted Lilly. Compared to your guys rotation as it stands to the Phillies I would take ours over the Cubs. What a great trade Floyd is horrible and Garcia slots into the #2 slot. Myers,Garcia,Hamels,Lieber,Eaton, and Moyer. 6 solid starting pitchers and now we can deal Lieber for some bullpen help. If we can get a solid 8th inning pitcher you better start ordering some phillies world series tickets, lol.
thosefnguys 12-06-2006, 10:05 PM thank god you talked some sense into me before I bought world series tickets.....

thosefnguys 12-09-2006, 12:21 PM Cubs just signed Marquis for 3 years, $20 mil. We'll get 12-14 wins out of him per season, so it's a start.
Fafafooey76 01-04-2007, 07:29 AM when do single game tickets go on sale?

Another ( KARMA ) reason why that team is cursed. They aint going anywhere.
Fafafooey76 01-22-2007, 10:47 PM Big Z about to be extended to a 6-7 year contract $100 million plus.....with the run support he's gonna get, should be a 17-20 win year. :D
uhohhotdog 01-22-2007, 11:07 PM Still think they need some middle bullpen relief. Any thoughts on the batting order?

Speaking of tickets, price increases this year... I heard up to $5 / ticket in the Bud Light Bleachers.
That may not seem like a lot, but the tix for that section were $40 last year... 12.5% increase for "fight to get a seat" tickets. :(
thosefnguys 01-26-2007, 09:31 AM Rusch has been released by the Cubs. He will be out for the 2007 season due to a blood clot, but should return in 2008.

cruz1785 01-26-2007, 12:22 PM I gotta say I hope the Cubs don't win for another 100 years.
Fafafooey76 02-06-2007, 05:49 PM Now that da bears are done with, it's time for Chicago's die hard fans to start buying tickets. February 23 people. Oh ya, and prices have gone up, guess $300 million spent in a offseason will do that.
Going back in August to watch a couple games, anyone took the stadium tour? thinking of doin that.
Stevie4Stern 02-06-2007, 05:56 PM BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!
Fafafooey76 02-12-2007, 09:58 PM BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!
hey now.
SI just listed the cubs offense at #2, just behind the Mets. Real question is what the pitching will be, behind Zambrano it's a guess. Lots of wild cards (including Prior, Miller and Hill) are yet to be determined on health.
Soriano will help this offense reach a new height.
:p
beerfan 02-13-2007, 11:04 AM Ever notice that you never see a Soriano supporter and Sammy Sosa backer in the same room at the same time??
They're the same person.
Soriano and Sosa are both butchers in the OF, they're both whiff kings (Soriano was benched in the '03 WS for his unwillingness to take a walk or - like Sosa - at least refrain from swinging at pitches in the dirt or over his head). They are both horrible with runners in scoring position and they're both divas in the clubhouse. Oh yeah...and they both were given gargantuan contracts that already have or will soon handcuff the Cubs for years. Oh, but they'll put plenty of fans in the seats and sell plenty of jerseys though, isn't that what's important?
Hey Now MoFo 02-13-2007, 01:01 PM I am on the fence with the Cubs this year. They are a better team then last year, but how much better? There is plenty of offense, but isn't their bullpen suspect? You can have all the offense in the world but bad middle relief could kill a team.
beerfan 02-14-2007, 09:51 AM They'll be better because if a team has any talent it all, it generally responds to a new manager's first year (see Busty Baker for an example) - and Piniella is not just any manager.
They won't however, go to the WS unless some savvy trades are made before the deadline. They've got a leadoff hitter who'll strike out more than anyone on the team, only one starting left-handed bat in the lineup - and he's a mope who has no idea how to run the bases, a starting SS who can't stay on the field, and unless Prior becomes productive again, their starting pitching is ridiculous (Ted Lilly as #2??). Oh yeah - but they just picked up Cliff Floyd! Whoopee-fucking-doo. Another guy whose best years came in the late 90's steroid era of inflated stats and juiced balls. Since then...???

expecting a 5 year-90 million dollar pay day.
will seem like a bargain compared to Zito.
:dm:
thosefnguys 02-19-2007, 02:31 PM Don't worry folks. Wood threw 10 whole pitches on Saturday, and "looked really good" to Rothschild.
Should have just given him the extra 2 days off and had him throw a reasonable number of pitches to at least garner such a comment.
Fafafooey76 02-20-2007, 05:15 PM Zambrano signs one year deal @ 12.4 million. Now we can focus on baseball.

dont blame u really
Lee Valoadiner 07-14-2007, 08:24 PM Say what you will about Cuban, at least the guy is willing to spend the money to put a good product on the field (court). If nothing else at least we can finally say good bye to those beat-offs at the Tribune company.

Lee Valoadiner 07-15-2007, 04:54 PM As of today, the Northsiders are 15-4 in their last 19 games. Granted, it doesn't mean shit other than they're starting to play the kind of ball that was expected at the beginning of the year.
In an article in SI, Baseball Prospectus' "Secret Sauce" formula (OK easy with the cum shot lines) predicts the Red Sox and Cubs should meet in the World Series.
We'll see...
Fafafooey76 07-18-2007, 02:42 AM ya now we have a cubs thread since cuban is buying the team

thread started before this season started. cuban is a spoiled rich kid who bitches and complains, but his money is just as good as anyone elses.
Kayotic1 07-18-2007, 09:35 AM The rumor is that MLB won't let Cuban by the Cubs, because he won't just bend over and do what they tell him to do. I would love for him to buy the Cubs. At least I know a good product would be put on the field every year. One of the other groups has a guy in it that is also part owner of the Brewers. If that is who gets approved I am crying foul.

Still with that being said the Phillies have a better record than the Cubs and I still think the Cubs will find a way to fuck it up in the playoffs if they make it.
Nice to see you supported your team all year long though. This thread wouldn't have been bumped if they weren't in 1st place of the worse division in baseball.
