Forget the Pro Wrestling Personally...
Forget the Historical sense...

Lets Talk about why we know him. IN THE RING:

Ali lets be honest he was SO overrated! Watch his fights, most of them are boring, the 1960's early fights he got dropped by unknowns & old hasbeen fighters like Henry Cooper, he almost got knocked out of the ring! but no one brings this up???

Then all through the 1970's he fought guys who had 1 style, not even "plan B". But Ali got nailed over and over. Frazier only has a left hook, but still got smashed by him for 3 fights with the same exact game plan??? :rolleyes:

Then when Boxing was falling and almost not a major sport like it was in the Early 1900's. They gave him most of his wins after the George Foreman fight. From 1975 - On.... Ali was given so many fights. Because he was a Great Promoter and a Great Face for a dieing sport.

Ali is so overrated. Watch him in the ring, he is WIDE OPEN for Left Hooks. Ignore all the outside stuff, the on mic stuff. Just in the ring. Before he was a Champ he was nailed with Left Hooks & all through his career he was wide open for Hooks.

Just because Ali fought You doesnt make you a great fighter. But all the fighters in his era he fought get this pass because they fought him well, here is the truth they all were ok, but fought decent fights against each other. But they werent great fighters!!! They all had 1 gameplan and thats it! No Plan B.

Frazier won 2 of the 3 fights
Ken Norton was robbed he won all 3 of their fights. (atleast 2 of the 3 fights)
etc.. etc.. etc...

Ali is Average at best. (in the ring)

Average compared to what??? You are a moron!!! What do you think Ali would do to todays fighters??? Think about what you put, average. Please you are a idiot!!! It kills me how every champ there has ever been can go down as a over-rated champ... People like you are idiots... Joe Frazier, ok he beat Ali 2 of 3, but how did he do in his career overall compared to Ali?? They did both fight in the same era, didnt they??? Cant you just admit that even the greatest fighters of any time could possibly have a problem with a certain style of fighting??? Just because they have a problem with a certain style (one you dont see that often) it doesnt take away from their greatness... I cant believe I saw someone call Ali average.. you can think he was a POS for his views and how he handled things and I would not knock you, but average??? You are a fool....

I agree that he is overrated if you call him the "greatest of all time." Certainly, Louis, Dempsey, and Marciano were better champions than Ali, but he fought the best competition out there over an extended period of time so he was certainly very good. He also got robbed of 3-4 prime years of his career b/c of the whole draft issue, so it's hard to say what his career would have been had he not taken that time off.

Jesus, this thread is nauseating.

Exactly which victories in Marciano's career rival what Ali did for nearly 20 years?

Oh don't answer, I'm not debating this, just kiss my ass.

Ali knew how to market himself, he was an instant celebrity and the rest of the fighters just fought. He was LARGER THAN LIFE and that is why he is a boxing legend today. He knew how to fuck with the media and they loved him for it. He understood, or was extraordinarily lucky, how to work the media, what it meant to be one of the first figures on a national stage, not just a boxer any more.

Remember that there were few television stations compared to today, media was far more concentrated, and society was a lot more rigid. But, yeah, clearly overrated. Those 70s fights were just entertainment. But there was no one like him, not even close, not before and not since.

Overrated means a lot of things. And yes you could say he is overrated becuase he was one of the best. He is one of the 5 best heavy weights of all time. However, where you rank him could determine if he is overrated or underrated. You could not say Mike Tyson is overrated because hes not even on the list. I do no think ALI was the best ever, and I know I will get flammed but my Home Boy Lennox Lewis would bust his ass.

mid-60's Ali looked impossible to beat. He was the fastest fighter I've ever seen in such an unconventional style, his form was so reckless that you won't see another boxer that is comparable.

How can you say a guy is overrated when he told you what he was going to do to you before the fight and there was nothing you could do about it. Every great boxer loses fights, and Ali obviously lost some of his magic after the war debacle, but he was a dominant fighter in his time.

I agree with your post as well fatboy, you won't find any better entertainment.

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing , but anybody in the fight game will tell you he was the GREATEST!

Let some of these schmoes today sit out for a couple of years and then see what they could do?

i always thought he was overrated as a person. everyone seems to love him . i think he was a trash talking ,draft dodging, dick. maybe it is a generational thing.

I didn't like him when he was at the top. I hated the loud mouth appeal he drew and created in latter day pro sports and in general. He's one of 2-3 pro athletes who backed up his smack talk though, and being the ONLY boxer who did it(heavyweight at that), I think he grew as much outside the ring as he did in. For those reasons, I have to say he was the Complete Great of All Time.

You are an idiot. Ali had the speed of most welterweights, particularly early in his career. You don't hear any of his contemporaries taking shit about him. They knew Ali was good. Also, none of the guys you mentioned that beat Ali were chumps. Frazier, Foreman, and Norton would have been heavyweight champs in any era.

Look, the orginal douchebag has convinced me. Ali was overrated. I mean, other than Ken Norton twice, George Foreman, Joe Frazier twice, Floyd Patterson twice, Sonny Liston twice, Archie Moore, Jimmy Young (yeah I know), Jimmy Ellis, Jerry Quarry twice, Bob Foster, Leon Spinks, Ernie Shavers, George Chuvalo, Cleveland Williams and Ernie Terrell, who did Ali ever beat?

That's SARCASM, douche.

Anybody who thinks Ali is overrated has never seen the Ali-Foreman fight from 1974. Ali was 33 years old. Foreman was 25. Foreman was 1.5 years removed from annihilating Joe Frazier in 2 rounds, knocking Frazier down 5 times. Five months before he fought Muhammad, Foreman knocked out Ken Norton in the 2nd round.

Against Foreman, in terms of strategy, Ali fought what most consider the greatest fight of all time.

I'm a Philly guy, so I'm all about Joe Frasier, but I gotta say: there was never a heavyweight I saw with as many tools as the young Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali. He did a lot of things better than anyone else in his weight class:

* moved
* jabbed
* more and ultimately more creative combos
* hit with power
* hit with accuracy
* fight strategy
* mastered multiple styles to take advantage of opponents
* took a punch better than virtually anyone
* knew how to recover, when to turn it on, when to shut it down

I never even liked Ali, but I sure as hell respected him for being the monster that he was. I can't say there has ever been a better heavyweight than Muhammad Ali.

BTW, forget all those fights in the 1980's and later. Not applicable.

Please.. Larry Holmes would have destroyed him. Forget when they fought that doesnt count.

Larry Holmes (in the ring) was the best of all time. He had everything.. he can take an amazing shot, he had the BEST Jab of all time, he was in battles and always pulled them out so he had the biggest heart!

Evander Holyfield is a recent champion. He would have killed Ali!!! Left Hooks everyone. Ali was wide open for them... Holyfiled had that Brawler/Boxer style.. If Ali had problems with dumb ass ONLY one style Joe Frazier and got hit with the same stupid punch for 3 fights.... Evander would have killed him. Holyfield has a style very close to Ken Norton.

Holmes & Holyfield would have beaten Ali 8 out of 10 times.

Watch Boxing. NOT the gimmick hypes crap writers over hype - over love an pretty ok fighter... Ali is so over hyped. He gets this free pass from Writers, they over hype him in every documentary & espn special.
