NEWSDAY APRIL 21st 2007
Willie Randolph declared yesterday he wasn't quite ready to accept the Braves into the Mets' elite company.
"They're still working on it," Randolph said. "It's way too early to know if they've reinvented themselves."
Later, Jones bristled at the snub, as only Chipper can.
"We showed (Friday) night we can go out and put a thumping on someone," Jones said. "Whether or not people outside this clubhouse want to put us in the upper echelon is no concern to me. If we keep winning games, they're going to have to by the end of the season."
Poor, Poor, Mets. Will the humiliation never end? Season series to date. Braves 4....Mets 2. After Willie's insightful words his team proceeded to lose two out of three on their home field.....surrender the N.L. East lead......and drop both series to date against the Braves. If the Mets and their fans weren't so fucking stupid and arrogant you might almost feel sorry for them. :(

What I find interesting about his comments is the fact that the Mets' supremacy has in no way been proven. It took them eighteen years to win the division and suddenly they belong among the elite teams in Willie Randolph's mind? After one solid season?
One thing it's not too early to know is that the Mets have two decades of futility under their belts. One good year and the world's supposed to believe something changed? I suppose it's that sort of blindness that makes Randolph a good candidate to lead the Mets into a new era...but it still doesn't sit well with me.

If the Mets should happen to take over the division lead tonight, feel free to drop by and say hello.

Of course I will. :) But I guess you're missing the point here. The Mets had one good season and flamed out in the playoffs. To me it seems like the fans and the teams' manager have gotten a little ahead of themselves. Obviously right now the Braves are the better team. We have a better record and have thus far dominated the Mets head-to-head by a two-to-one margin. Even after all that, the manager and the fans are arrogant. It's fucking unbelievable! The good thing is it really fires up the Braves players. So again, I say thank you Willie Randolph. Please continue to display arrogrance and a complete lack of class. It really makes beating you guys sweet.

You should talk about "flaming out" in the playoffs. Losing in the first round of the playoffs 5 out of the last 6 years you are in it is flaming out, not going to extra innings of game 7 of the NLCS.
He said it's too early to tell, which is the truth. It's too early to tell a lot of things about the season in the first 3 weeks. If they asked him if this year's Mets team was as good as they were last year he probably would have given the same answer. They are not even through the first month of the season. The Braves have played well against the Mets and have beaten them, but I wouldn't call it domination. Most of the games have been good, close games. You even said so yourself yesterday. You talk like you have a 10 game lead at the end of April. You've played one more game than the Mets have and won it. That's the only difference in the standings and all that matters. It's a marathon not a sprint.

I think his comments implied that the Mets have somehow figured out something that the Braves haven't. That they're "there" and the Braves are still trying to get "there." To me, it was more of a statement about his team than it was about the Braves. The Mets haven't proven a damn thing. I'm not one of those people that'll say, "Give me a call when you win fifteen straight division titles." They don't have to do that. But it'll have to be more than one division title before he can start shitting on other teams in the division. Especially one that has dominated for as long as the Braves have.
It's hard not to buy into your own press, I suppose. You have to give the Braves fans some credit. They don't sell out playoff games in Atlanta because people were waiting for a certain level of success (that the team rarely achieved) before they took the team HALF as seriously as Willie's taking his team after one solid year.
Also, it's silly to sit here and think the Mets will never lead the NL East this season. It's going to happen. Hell, it'll probably happen this week. They're a good team and we're roughly 1/10 of the way through the season.
