View Full Version : Wagner: ‘we’ve Underachieved’
Petey Arms 07-11-2007, 04:30 PM SAN FRANCISCO - Billy Wagner called his teammates on the carpet yesterday, saying the Mets were big-time underachievers in the first half, even though they are in first place at the All-Star break.
“We underachieved,’’ Wagner told The Post during the All-Star National League interview session. “There was no consistency in our offense. There was no consistency in our bullpen. And we have the talent on both sides to probably be twice as good as what we played.’’
The Mets have to play the second half with more focus and Wagner wants that to begin immediately. They own just a two-game lead over the Braves.
Carlos Beltran agreed to an extent, saying, “We learned we have a pretty good team. Even though we went through a lot of ups and downs we are still in first place. We didn’t play the way we know we can play but we’re still in first place. With a lot of guys coming back we can play a lot better.’’
Wagner wants to see the Mets pick up their game right from the start of the second half. They open up at home against the Reds. The Mets finished the All-Star break at 48-39.
The lesson learned in the first half, Wagner said, “Was that we can’t play this inconsistently going into the second half. And we can’t worry about our injuries. We’ve got more talent than most teams and we have to go out there and perform.’’
In other words, the Mets don’t need to be making excuses. They just need to go out and win.

mbrin_61 07-11-2007, 10:40 PM I saw another article that basically said Mets players thought they could put it in cruise control. The arrogance is amazing. The Mets do not have superior talent compared to many other teams in baseball. To think that you can "underachieve" or put it "in cruise control" is fucking ridiculous....Of Course I'm not complaining. Keep underachieving. You guys are the greatest team in Baseball History. You could kick the ass of the '27 Yankees. Jose Reyes is the greatest player to ever pick up a baseball bat! (Hype, Hype, Hype, Hype, Bullshit, Bullshit, Bullshit.....). GO Mutts!!!!!
mbrin_61 07-11-2007, 10:52 PM Part of an article in Newsday. You can see the complete article on SI's Website.
Randolph is among a number of veteran Mets -- closer Billy Wagner, catcher Paul Lo Duca and Hall of Fame-bound pitcher Tom Glavine are some of the others -- who have noted this year's team has a dangerous tendency to float at times through games or whole series, confident that their talent will rise up and save them. "You still have to make things happen," Glavine has fretted more than once.
Some Mets have also come to think the team takes too much false security in how long they've stayed in first place, albeit by just two games now over the Braves as the season resumes tomorrow at Shea Stadium.
Lo Duca even thinks the stranglehold the Mets have had on the division lead for nearly all of the past two seasons "might have something to do with when we've played badly [this year]. It's almost like we get -- I don't know -- too laid-back. We're like, 'We'll be OK ... We're fine.' And then all of a sudden, instead of losing just three or four games, it turns into a 14- or 15-game stretch like we had in June. Then later, we sit around going, 'God! If we had just gone 8-8 instead of 4-12 or 4-14 or whatever it was, we'd have an eight- or nine-game division lead now.'"

Yeah, it's such a ridiculous notion to think you could have played better. Another intelligent post by a moron.
Of Course I'm not complaining. Keep underachieving. No problem. So far it's still landed them in first place for the first half of the season.
