To be the hitting coach

NEW YORK -- Rickey Henderson is replacing Rick Down as hitting coach of the New York Mets starting Thursday.

Henderson, who had been a special instructor for the Mets this season, is a 10-time All-Star who set career records for stolen bases (1,406) and runs (2,295). He was the AL MVP in 1990.

The Mets' decision to make Henderson their hitting coach was first reported Wednesday night by Newsday on its Web site.

New York, which leads the NL East by two games over second-place Atlanta, is sixth in the NL with a .268 team batting average.

He wanted to play one more time with the A's--but they said no way! With his attitude the Mets will be falling down down down..........they will come out in the second half losing 4 of the first 6............

I loved Rickey as a player (not as much as Rickey loved Rickey as a player) but does it bother any Mets fan that Rickey Henderson seems.... uummm.....retarded?

Quite an interesting move. I like it.

He's really had a positive impact when asked to tutor a player. Look at what he did with Roger Cedeno in 1999 and what he's done with Reyes the past couple spring training.

He should also preach patience at the plate which will be a welcome site after the first half of first pitch swinging and lack of taking walks.

Now, if only they could find a coaching job for Julio Franco. . .

Cedeno had one good year and they traded him and dotel to the astros for hampton and bell

Yeah, the hitting coach's "attitude" will cause the team to go into an immediate spiral. You're a very knowledgeable baseball fan.

Good luck with that prediction. The Mets have four against the 36-52/last place Reds. Rickey better hurry up and get to corrupting the entire staff of a major league team that has proven itself to be one of the better organizations of the last few years.

the mets are a good team that can compete for a championship and they don't need a publicity move like this

Are you semi-retarded or full-on retarded? He's a fucking hitting coach, not the lead off hitter.
I bet you have no clue as to 99% of the hitting coaches that are out there yet you seem to know the impact they have?

I like the move. Rickey has certainly proved he can be a teacher. All you have to do is look at Jose Reyes for a great example.

Fuck Rick Down....

Exactly. Rickey's tutoring led to getting Hampton who led the Mets to getting to the World Series in 2000.

Let's Go Mets!

king you cant be serious, if the phillies brought mitch williams back as pitching coach, i wouldnt say i liked it, isn't this the same guy who framed his million dollar check and told jon olerud, he once plyed with a guy who wore a batting helmet in the field, he had it was olerud.....sounds like a coach to me....he must have pictures of someone doing something....

it's a crime that Rickey Henderson wasn't able to retire on his own terms and basically given the cold shoulder by every team in baseball. not that Rickey was ever the best employee as far as his attitude and ego, but he still had things to offer considering the state of the MLB leadoff hitters at the time. signing him as a hitting coach is interesting. he has a lot of knowledge about working counts and I think may help Reyes get even better. and it can't hurt to have him helping the team running the basepaths as well. if anyone has ever heard him talk about the basics of being a baserunner, you'll understand how he stole so many bases.

Supposedly HoJo will be accepting a lot of Rick Down's responsibilities

I like the move because they brought in Rickey.

If they fired Down and replaced him with another schmo then I would have not liked the move. As I said before I dont believe that a hitting coach has that much influence on a team anyway. But Rickey, thats another story :D

Just having Rickey around the team means trouble, his attitude sucks, it all about him, he will bring you such bad karma starting with the loss on Friday night. It will be a tough second half for the Mets, you will see.................

Rickey thinks Rickey will do a great job showing the Mets how to hit like Rickey.
