Not all the calls are staged. I would say about 60% of them are. If you can't pick the staged ones, then you're just not a prank call aficionado. It's not your fault.

I've been listening to prank calls ever since Tube Bar...I can tell. And it seems like a lot of other people here can as well.

localhost
08-04-2007, 09:21 AM
I just think there are a few too many of them. Especially as Artie pointed out when they use the same premise over and over again. Once or twice is great, 10 of the same concept gets old and predictable.

It seems like we have to sit through quite a few mediorce calls to get to the home run calls. I wish the calls would be limited to once or twice a week so that only the best of the best get played.

Fake or not (and I reckon many are fake) they are mostly dull, unfunny shit, the sort of crap you'd expect from your local morning Zoo. Howard loves them because they are an easy source of filler. As soon as say, Crazy Alice is mentioned - out come 10 phony phone calls and song paradies everyone has heard a billion times. We get though all that and then a caller will mention Riley and Howard will methodically go through every fucking Riley phone call and song he has access to (i believe they are on the I-have-half-a-billion-dollars-and-frankly-have-lost-my-enthusiam preview page in blue). Before you know it it's time for a break... buffered by more played-to-death calls.

I'm sorry but I just don't like the Sal/Richard crank calls. I don't think they are funny and sometimes cross the line into being mean spirited. I liked it back in the day when we'd hear them every once in a while. When Janks would call in that play some of his calls. They wouldn't be replayed constantly like they are now. Real or fake I don't care just make me laugh and Sal/Richard rarely do that.

Well they GOTTA have commercials on a live talk show once in a while. The guys are gonna need to take a piss at some point. The commercial breaks are really short tho, so really it just gives them a chance to do that and get back to the show. It's not like the old 20-minute FM breaks.

Prank calls lose their effect when they are played too often or they are too similar to previously overplayed prank calls. A great prank call is a gem, a poor prank call is annoying and a waste of time. Make the calls, shitcan the bad ones, and play the great ones on a limited basis.

The calls are played at nauseum lately. If played everyday, they lose their shock value (much like the Sybian).

I realize why the calls are played so much at the current time. Much like the Howard 100 News and John Hein coming in every day to discuss what's going to be on the news and the Wrap Up Show, respectively, it's filler material.

TheRapist

They do the Jack and Rod stuff because there's consent from the "guests" from the beginning. It's an easy way to get around having to call back afterwards.

I get very bored with the "interruption" calls after hearing them a couple times.

Certain calls like "I'm telling Carl!", "Nigga love sweetening", and the Public Access ones crack me up even if I've heard them a hundred times.

They need to branch out a bit and try some different concepts. Jack and Rod with an a tape interrupting the guest every time they speak is getting old.

LetsGoIsles
08-04-2007, 06:50 PM
It is now illegal to tape a phone conversation. If you are taping somebody over the phone, you must let them know BEFORE the call and not after. The calls have to be fake by law.

That being said, I like them but I don't like how Howard uses them as filler. Either last Tuesday or Wednesday it seemed like at least 2 hrs of calls.

I've often wondered about the legality of some of the prank calls; back in the day, most of these would be called "obscene phone calls", and would be criminal behavior. Since many of them sound fairly authentic, I wonder how they get away with it... Do they call the people up later and tell them they can have some money if they'll sign a release, and that it's just a gag??? Maybe I'm naive, but I suspect that if I started calling old ladies and playing "Can I stick my finger in your ass?" sound bytes, I'd be getting a visit from the Po-Leece soon after.

I think that you showed tremendous balls when you were man'd up and claimed the vitriolic e-mail to Mutt as your own, and you apologized.

But with that said, maybe you should stop concerning yourself with "legal" issues. You come off a little paranoid. Just saying.

There's just something a little pathetic about listening to a millionaire laugh at phone calls made to working class people who are just trying to make a living at some shit job.

Illegal how and where? Unless recorded over-the-air, as from a cordless phone, it's strictly a "States Rights" issue, and NOT solely under Federal jurisdiction. Each state has completely different laws of consent and whether either or both parties need be informed before or after the call.

I just love it when people make shit up to look important- especially on the internet. You just don't have the first fucking clue what you are talking about.

Federal law allows recording of phone calls and other electronic communications with the consent of at least one party to the call. A majority of the states and territories have adopted wiretapping statutes based on the federal law, although most also have extended the law to cover in-person conversations. Thirty-eight states and the District of Columbia permit individuals to record conversations to which they are a party without informing the other parties that they are doing so. These laws are referred to as "one-party consent" statutes, and as long as you are a party to the conversation, it is legal for you to record it. (Nevada also has a one-party consent statute, but the state Supreme Court has interpreted it as an all-party rule.)

Twelve states require, under most circumstances, the consent of all parties to a conversation. Those jurisdictions are California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington. Be aware that you will sometimes hear these referred to inaccurately as "two-party consent" laws. If there are more than two people involved in the conversation, all must consent to the taping.

For instance- NY
N.Y. Penal Law §§ 250.00, 250.05: It is a Class E felony to overhear or record a telephonic or telegraphic communication if one is not the sender or receiver, or does not have the consent of either the sender or receiver. It also is a crime for someone not present to overhear or record any conversation or discussion without the consent of at least one party to that conversation.

California is more strict, requiring both parties' consent-
Cal. Penal Code §§ 631, 632: It is a crime in California to intercept or eavesdrop upon any confidential communication, including a telephone call or wire communication, without the consent of all parties.

NJ is more lenient-
N.J. Stat. § 2A:156A-3: Interception of any wire, electronic or oral communication, or disclosure of the contents of such communication by someone having reason to know of the interception, is a crime. The disclosure of intercepted information is not a crime, however, if the contents of the communication have "become public knowledge or public information."

In addition, an interception is legal if the interceptor is a party to the communication, or one of the parties has given prior consent, so long as no criminal or tortious intent is present. Nonetheless, even if a person is a subscriber to a particular telephone, that person cannot consent to the recording of conversations on that telephone to which he is not a party. N.J. Stat. § 2A:156A-4.

So you're full of shit.

I hate the crank calls on the show, as I find them to be incredibly annoying to listen to. And, in general, I am not a huge fan of crank calls, BUT, if properly done, they can be very funny. How about calling people on the show and goofing on them ? If done well, that could be very, very funny ! Imagine a 'private' call by Howie to Ronnie where Howie tells Ronnie that he can't hang out in the studio anymore. Or imagine a 'private' call from Ralph to Howie where Ralph tells Howie that he secretly loves Howie. Or better yet a 'private' call from Dominic to Howie where Dominic breaks the news to Howie that Howie is about to be sued for his entire net worth and that he is likely to lose and be forced into bankruptcy. The potential ideas are near endless.

Most of them are hysterical but the premise gets old after a while. Artie and Howard were dead on when they were ragging on the "interruption" premise. The only thing negative I see about them is that Sal has developed quite an inflated ego as a result of the calls. I think he thinks they are something only he can do. The reality is, without Richard Christy's hysterical accent and woman voice, the calls would be really bad Jerky Boys calls.

Its time for one to RIP the Richard triple talk with the old lady with salad in her mouth.... PLEASE!!!

I'd like to hear more comedy skits and parodies than constant crank calls.
This is why having folks like Billy West on the show were gold. We haven't even had a gay Star Trek skit yet and they have George "Sulu" Takei for God sakes.
They did the Desperate Housewives and Brokeback Mountain bits, but those took months and months.
Didn't skits used to take a couple days to pound out?

Relying on filler bits from "The Boys" becomes a crutch.

some of the calls are great, but i wish there was more quality control on the show. seems like they just about play every call they do. and sal and richard dont care if a call is funny or not they just want it on the air

There should be a limit on how many times they play some of them before they are retired.

I think I have most of them memorized by now...

Considering they are fake, make up like half the show, and are constantly replayed, YES.

That about sums up my position.

A version of Chinese Confusion was done first by another comedy show.

For shame Sal.

that was from some time after sal originally did it.

you might get confused because he is ripped off so much.

Come on Guys we all know they ARE fake they ARE over done, they ARE over promoted and they ARE just there to fill time....I honestly switch the channel when he says "Do you want to look at this nude chick or do you want to hear a "Sal and Richard" Prank call and Robin says, "Oh, I would love to hear the call" It's all set up, and that is very sad that the show has gone down that road, VERY produced and many bits that fill time inbtween breaks and so on...

with a show that doesn't have the budget for anything,(howard took all the marbles)this is a way to keep costs down. repeat bits.

One more thing, if you think it is bad now, wait till the companies merge.

The ones to the public access show are definietely fake, they have set up an alternate fake TV studio that broadcasts just so they can setup their fake calls.

Why the fuck would they need to bother with releases and lose calls because people won't sign if the calls are fake?

A prank call, also known as a crank call, hoax call, phony call, or phony phone call is a form of practical joke committed over the telephone. As with all practical jokes, prank calls are generally done for humorous effect, though there is a thin line between humor and harassment, and the person receiving the call may not find it funny. Prank phone calls began to gain an America-wide following over a period of many years, as they gradually became a staple of the obscure and amusing cassette tapes traded amongst musicians, sound engineers, and media traders beginning in the late 1970s. Among the most famous and earliest recorded prank calls are the Tube Bar tapes which centered around Louis "Red" Deutsch, and the Lucius Tate phone calls. Comedian Jerry Lewis was an incorrigible phone prankster, and recordings of his hijinks, dating from the 1960s and possibly earlier, still circulate throughout the country to this day.

Since someone on the show is mailing it in, I'm not surprised that there are multiple calls played per show.

It's going to be a part of the show for the remaining three years. Zero effort is being put into the show these days. More effort is being put into designing and decorating someone's house.

Enjoy the tapes.
