September 2, 2007 -- INCREDIBLY, we have reached September and the New York manager on the hottest seat is not Joe Torre.

Obviously, Torre is managing for his job this month, needing at minimum the playoffs and maybe a championship to be retained. But Torre's Yankees have revived in the second half and - even under the worst scenario - he will have thrived and survived in his job far beyond the grandest expectations when he was hired in November 1995.

Willie Randolph, however, has piloted a Mets team that has played apathetically this season. He has no great legacy. He had a first year that was going to be positive simply because he was not Art Howe and he had a magical second year - at least until the NLCS - in which the Mets ran away with the division. But Year 3 is proving problematic.

There have been rumblings of dissatisfaction for Randolph both in the front office and in the clubhouse. Four different major-league sources said Mets upper management has expressed concerns about Randolph both tactically and in failing to get his team to play with consistent passion this year. Two agents with players on the Mets both said their clients have conveyed the sense of a clubhouse that is more consistently second-guessing managerial strategy.

In addition, Randolph has the very modern problem now of being caught in the critical crosshairs on both talk radio and the Internet while also having a prickly relationship with the media that covers the team daily. And he has an ownership that has always been ultra-sensitive to the public/media cacophony.

Nevertheless, while voicing displeasure about the inconsistency of both the play and emotion of his team, Jeff Wilpon said, "Not at all," when asked if his manager was in trouble. "There have been no conversations at all about Willie Randolph."

Omar Minaya said, "With all the injuries we have had, Willie has done a very good job. We are very happy to have Willie Randolph as our manager. That (his removal) has not even been a topic of discussion."

When asked if failing to finish first or failing to make the playoffs could alter Randolph's status, Minaya said, "I am telling you as the GM I decide these things, and to me Willie has done a good job under difficult situations. I don't see any reason why we should change the manager."

I never really liked the mets but i always liked Willie. I listen to sports talk radio a lot in NY and cant understand why so many mets fans hate him. I think he was a great choice for the mets and people who say he is inexperienced are just stupid. I barely watch teh mets but he seems to have the same problem that Torre does in using his bullpen. I dont know why Willie keeps using Mota while Torre keeps using farnsworth (although torre is using him less).

From where the mets were to where they are now, it is silly to think of canning Randolph

With all due respect you guys don't watch the Mets every game so you may not see what we see on a daily basis. Willie is an interim guy cutting his teeth and this is not the team for him to do that with. This is the best team in the NL and by all rights should be in the World Series. Willie is not a tactician and is horrible when it comes to managing his pitchers. He is also a players coach and rides with guys too long that are in prolonged slumps. He will not deliver the Mets to the promise land. Should they fire him? No. Too late to upset the team now with that distraction. That should have been assessed and done way before. The Mets need a guy like a Pinella or LaRussa or some guy with a little more passion that can get in the face of select members of this team when neccessary.

I keep hearing rumors that LaRussa might be getting an offer to take over the reds next year..as for Lou..no chance he is leaving the cubs

Wille is off and on for me. He made some really bonehead moves in the Philly series then looks like a fucking genius against the Braves this weekend. I will have to wait to see how he handles this year's playoff run before I weigh in on this. I question his motivation of the team at times but I like his aggressive coaching style. You'd think the two would go hand-in-hand but I haven't seen it this year. Right now I like him.

If the question is WILL he get fired, I say definitely not.

Horrible thread.

You post a poll titled "Should he" and then pose the question in the poll as "Will he".

Should he, and Will he be fired are two different things.

Should he be fired? I don't think so. I still think overall the Mets had a great season and merely just choked at the end which doesn't SOLELY reflect on Randolph's management style.

Will he be fired? Only the Mets know the answer to that. It all depends on wether or not they feel they need to have a scapegoat to answer to the fans as to why they shit the bed. Otherwise, my gut feeling says that the Mets organization stands by him and says they shit the bed and have no excuses.
