It's declined slightly because they've tinkered with the game itself too much in an effort to make it more accessible to non-fans, but I don't think expansion has had too much of an effect. Figure that they've been getting a lot more players from Europe since just before the latest expansion era, and also more American players entering the talent pool.

I don't think talent has diminished too much. Goalies are MUCH bigger and better than they used to be. There is a lot of really good young talent in the league right now.

I have XM and the NHL channel is great. Only place in the US to get 24/7 hockey talk. I just bought Center Ice package, so I doubt i'll be listening to too many games though.

I'm old and I grew up a major hockey fan. I can't watch it anymore because of all the rule changes. They lost me during the last lockout. They have been trying to turn it into a no check league. It's not the game I grew up watching, it's a sadly diluted shadow of the game.

He's increased the bottom line for owners - that's why they've kept him around - but they have to accept that hockey is a niche sport with a base of very loyal fans, and they need to just try not to piss off these fans by introducing all of these stupid-ass gimmicks and rule changes.

My fiance was an AVID fan of Hockey and he doesn't even go to the games anymore. He says the ticket prices are beat, too.

agreed, they do dumb stuff to try to get new fans, but they lose old fans in the process. its easier to keep a fan, then it is to get a fan. i think hes an idiot.

Some good points but the NHL still has the most honest athletes playing - no showboating look at me bullshit and those guys skate their balls off almost every shift. I'm an old timer also and the game has changed but it's got some speed now. Try watching a classic game from the 70's - they look like their skating in mud !

Sirius said the NHL wasn't drawing enough ratings to warrant spending the money for the rights to broadcast for another year.

That's somewhat odd. Howard continually says they can't track the number of listers the show gets.

The top players in the league stood up for themselves and earned the respect of other players. They didn't cry because they were being checked. Mario Lemieux could've played old time hockey.
