February 24, 2008 -- Looks like New Englanders aren't just cheaters - they're chiselers, too.
Following Patriots coach Bill Belichick's sneaky playbook, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has failed to pay up on his Super Bowl bet with Gov. Spitzer.
Patrick still owes Spitzer two dozen Legal Sea Foods dinners of scrod, scallops and clam chowder, as well as several pints of Brigham's "Boston You're My Home" vanilla ice cream, after the Giants' earth-shattering win over the Patriots on Feb. 3.
A Spitzer spokesman said staffers have called Patrick's office to ask about the wager but have gotten no answers. Patrick's office has yet to comment.
Patrick is the only New England politico who hasn't made good after losing bets to New Yorkers.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino on Feb. 13 paid up the clam chowder, Boston cream pies, rolls and ice cream he bet Mayor Bloomberg. Bloomy donated the grub to a city soup kitchen.
Even leaders from the towns where the stadiums sit have settled their bets.
The highest official in Foxborough, Mass., Selectman Mark Sullivan, hand-delivered a vat of chowder to East Rutherford, NJ, Mayor James Cassella on Feb. 19.
