hockey is by far a rougher and tougher sport, just ask me, I know. I will give football due though, and the ravens are a rough and tough team. they're fighters and winners just like me, even though I'm a colts fan deep down.

Why yes, it is the number of Superbowl MVP Hines Ward. And this rebuttal pic is pretty weak. Anyone who played the game from high school on up who gave shit was moved to tears in defeat at some point. But I guess Ratbird fans are pretty much used it. You guys are still giddy over RayRay not being assfucked in prison like he deserves. Maybe he and OJ could open up a chain of used car lots together.

Ravens CB Chris McAlister has one. So does Shaq. And now Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle has one also. These rides cost at least six figures and can run as high as $200,000. Ridiculous. If you've ever seen one in person, you're left with no doubt it could be used to invade a small country.

Player....I love your enthusiasm, and I'll be there tomorrow night in my purple camo....but if this team wins 6 games this year, I'll consider it a good season.

Too many holes on the "O" line, a pissed off T-Sizzle, a hurt Ed Reed, and I'm not even going to start on the QB situation.

Killer schedule the first 10 weeks.....god bless you brother, but I'm just keeping it real.

the offense will be fine, troy smith is going to start. if ray lewis says you're the guy, then you're the guy :bl: with a healthy mcgahee and ray rice running behind neal, the pass game should be opened up nicely, remember TODD HEAP is back too

i'm glad they didnt let suggs go. fuck him if he doesnt like it, it's business. he can play for a new contract or he can fuck off. i've read that ed reed might be ready to go for week 1.

Terrell Suggs begins practice

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs reported to the team Monday and began practicing after signing his $8.47 million, one-year tender.

On the advice of his agent, the Ravens’ franchise player skipped training camp to protest the franchise tag. He’s expected to play about 15 snaps against the St. Louis Rams in the team’s third preseason game on Saturday night.

“It was the business side of it. I really didn’t want to do it because I love football and running around,” Suggs said in explaining his 23-day absence. “It was really no big deal. It gave me extended time to further prepare myself for the season.”

Suggs, who has 45 sacks in five seasons, is likely to sit out the Ravens’ preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons and then start the season opener Sept. 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Suggs seemed to be in good shape considering he had been working out with a personal trainer instead of bull-rushing offensive tackles, but noted that he wasn’t in football shape yet.

“You could tell, the change of direction and burst,” Harbaugh said. “But he was competing and fighting. He’ll probably be a little sore tomorrow, but he’s in good shape.”

Suggs expressed optimism that a long-term deal will be worked out with the Ravens. His return wasn’t tied to any conditions and the team is free to franchise him again after this season. There are no financial penalties for missing camp.

“I’m highly optimistic they’ll eventually get something done,” Suggs said. “I can’t worry about it now. I haven’t lost faith in them. I still think they want me here. That’s all I’ve got to go on.”

Suggs said he’s going to treat several defensive players this week for an elaborate, expensive dinner as a penance for not reporting on time.

Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, a 6-foot-4, 340-pounder joked that he might eat three porterhouse steaks, sample the dessert cart and take home plenty of food for his wife and his dog.

Also, Harbaugh indicated that he has decided who will start at quarterback against the Rams. However, he declined to reveal whether it will be Kyle Boller or Troy Smith.

“Not ready to announce it yet,” Harbaugh said.

Note

Seven injured players returned to practice, including tight ends Todd Heap (calf) and Daniel Wilcox (toe), offensive tackle Adam Terry (sprained left ankle), Ngata (sprained right medial collateral ligament), cornerbacks Chris McAlister (right knee) and Samari Rolle (left leg) and David Pittman (foot) and linebacker Tavares Gooden (hip).

Troy Smith, locked in a duel with Kyle Boller to earn the starting assignment, struggled in his first start of the preseason for Baltimore (1-1). The former Heisman Trophy winner went 3-for-5 for 25 yards and an interception in the first half, finishing with a horrid 33.3 quarterback rating. He did, however, gain 35 yards on three carries behind a makeshift offensive line.

“Getting out of the pocket and making plays is something we’re going to be doing this year,” Smith said.

Boller entered in the third quarter and went 8-for-12 for 40 yards. He also threw an interception, his third turnover in two games.

Top draft pick Joe Flacco played the final two drives.

“I think Troy and Kyle, by the basis of practice so far, have separated themselves from Joe in terms of being ready to line up and win a football game for us at this level,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said.

Harbaugh would not name his starter for Baltimore’s next preseason game.

Injury Report:

WR Demetrius Williams (lower left leg) remains on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

TE Daniel Wilcox (toe) passed his physical and was removed from the physically-unable-to-perform list.

OT Jared Gaither (ankle) and Adam Terry (ankle) are day-to-day and could return this week.

DT Haloti Ngata (knee sprain) is expected to return to practice and play in the third preseason game.

DT Kelly Gregg (leg) had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He is day-to-day and might return to practice this week.

CB Chris McAlister (knee) is expected to return to practice this week after missing two preseason games.

RB Willis McGahee (knee) had arthroscopic knee surgery but the Ravens said he will be ready for the regular-season opener.

TE Todd Heap (calf) missed the first two preseason games but he is not expected to be out for an extended time. He is expected to be ready for the regular-season opener.

FS Ed Reed (shoulder) has missed the first two preseason games and has not been cleared for contact. Reed said he is uncertain whether he will be ready for the regular-season opener. But the Ravens contend that he will start Sept. 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Ravens trade for Marques Douglas

Aug 27, 4:00 pm EDT

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—The Baltimore Ravens traded for Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Marques Douglas on Wednesday, reacting quickly to defensive lineman Dwan Edwards’ season-ending back injury.

Former second-round pick Dan Cody was cut to make room for Douglas.

The 31-year-old Douglas was acquired for a late-round draft choice in 2009 and a conditional 2010 draft selection.

Douglas was with the Ravens from 2001 to 2004 after signing with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent out of Howard in 2000. Last season, he had 72 tackles and three sacks with the San Francisco 49ers.

At 6 feet 2, 292 pounds, Douglas is capable of playing defensive end or defensive tackle in the Ravens’ aggressive scheme. Tampa Bay signed Douglas to a four-year, $10.1 million contract during the offseason, but his playing time dwindled behind Kevin Carter.

Douglas is due a $1 million base salary this season and $2.4 million each in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Douglas started 47 of 48 games for the 49ers under former Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.

For his career, Douglas has 335 tackles and 19 sacks.

Edwards was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. He started a career-high 13 games last season in relief of an injured Trevor Pryce and had a career-high 58 tackles.

Ravens sign QB Bramlet

BALTIMORE (AP)—The Baltimore Ravens signed quarterback Casey Bramlet on Thursday.

Bramlet played last season for current Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron when both were with the Miami Dolphins. The quarterback signed during the offseason with San Diego, but was cut Tuesday.

Bramlet caught a late flight to Baltimore after being claimed on waivers and was expected to play in the Ravens’ preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night. He was scheduled to relieve rookie starter Joe Flacco.

Flacco was forced into the starting lineup because Troy Smith has a viral illness, and Kyle Boller is nursing a shoulder injury that could keep him sidelined indefinitely.

The Ravens created a roster spot for Bramlet by cutting kicker Piotr Czech.

Strategy And Personnel

The Ravens traded for Tampa Bay defensive lineman Marques Douglas to improve their depth.

The Ravens will send the Buccaneers a late-round draft choice in 2009 and a conditional pick in 2010 for Douglas, who has had two previous stints in Baltimore. Douglas will fill the void left in the rotation by Dwan Edwards, who was placed on injured reserve.

The Ravens will also pick up the contract for Douglas, who recently signed a four-year, $10.1 million contract with Tampa Bay. Douglas, 31, had 133 tackles and 10 sacks while starting for the Ravens in 2003 and 2004.

Player To Watch: WR Marcus Smith—The fourth-round pick from New Mexico was quiet in preseason games but surpassed expectations in training camp. He could figure into the Ravens’ passing game this season. If Demetrius Williams remains hurt and Yamon Figurs struggles, Smith could end up as the Ravens’ No. 3 receiver.

DRAFT PICKS TO STICK

Rd. 1/18, QB Joe Flacco, Delaware—With Troy Smith and Kyle Boller sidelined, Flacco has re-emerged in the Ravens’ quarterback battle. If he doesn’t start the opener, he should take over the job at some point in the season.

Rd. 2/55, RB Ray Rice, Rutgers—Rice will be an excellent change-of-pace back to Willis McGahee. He should see his opportunities increase throughout the season. With McGahee out most of the preseason, Rice has impressed the coaches with his hard running.

Round 3/71, LB Tavares Gooden, Miami—He is one of the fastest linebackers on the team. Gooden should find a role as a dime back and on special teams.

Round 3/86, SS Tom Zbikowski, Notre Dame—Zbikowski will make an immediate impact on special teams. He has potential as a starter down the line.

Round 3/99, OT Oniel Cousins, UTEP—He is a raw prospect but he showed a nasty side in training camp. He could be the starting right tackle next season.

Round 4/106, WR Marcus Smith, New Mexico—He had a solid training camp and moved up the depth chart. He could play his way to being the No. 3 or No. 4 receiver.

Round 4/133, G David Hale, Weber State—He adds depth to the interior of the line.

Round 6/206, S Haruki Nakamura, Cincinnati—He was one of the surprises of training camp. A solid special teams player, Nakamura could develop into a starter in a couple of seasons.

UNIT BY UNIT ANALYSIS

Quarterback: Starter—Undecided. Backups—Troy Smith, Kyle Boller, Joe Flacco, Casey Bramlet.

The question at quarterback could make for a long season. Smith is the front-runner if he can overcome swollen tonsils. Boller is dealing with a serious shoulder injury that could sideline him for the entire season. If Smith and Boller can’t play, Flacco will win the job by default. This is far from an ideal situation because the Ravens are trying to determine a starter out of a group of backups. Smith might be the best fit at this point. His athleticism will buy time behind a shaky offensive line. But this will be Flacco’s job at some point this season. Even if he doesn’t start the season opener, Flacco will likely take over by the midseason bye.

Running Backs: Starters—RB Willis McGahee, FB Le’Ron McClain. Backups—RB Ray Rice, FB Lorenzo Neal, RB Cory Ross.

With no legitimate quarterback, the Ravens will rely on McGahee to carry the offense. But that could be a major problem, too. The Ravens want him to become an every-down back, it’s uncertain whether he knows the offense. Like he did for years in Buffalo, McGahee decided to skip most of the offseason minicamps. He then missed a majority of training camp because he needed arthroscopic knee surgery. The only alternative is Rice, the second-round pick out of Rutgers. The undersized back runs with toughness in between the tackles and is dangerous catching passes in the flats. Le’Ron McClain has the potential to be one of the NFL’s top fullbacks but lacks work ethic. The Ravens signed hard-nosed Lorenzo Neal near the end of training camp to become a role model for these young backs.

Tight End: Starter—Todd Heap. Backups—Daniel Wilcox, Edgar Jones.

Heap has been sidelined most of the preseason with a calf injury. If he can get healthy—which was a problem last season—he could have a career season. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Heap put up numbers similar to San Diego’s Antonio Gates, who benefited greatly from Cam Cameron’s play calling. Beyond Heap, the Ravens lack depth. Wilcox is solid but he has struggled all offseason with a toe injury. He continues to play with pain. The third tight end is Jones, who was playing linebacker for the first two preseason games. Jones has potential to be an above average tight end. But don’t rule out the Ravens bringing in another tight end after the final cutdown.

Wide Receivers: Starters—FL Mark Clayton, SE Derrick Mason. Backups—Demetrius Williams, Yamon Figurs, Marcus Smith, Justin Harper.

The Ravens’ passing game will suffer because there are no playmakers at receiver. Mason has the best hands on the team but he lacks speed to beat cornerbacks deep. So, he’ll catch between 70 to 80 passes but he won’t be breaking too many 20-yard plays. The hope is that Clayton and Williams will rebound from a season in which they combined for no touchdowns. Clayton, who had family issues last season, has taken hold of the starting job because Williams has been hurt. It is unknown how much Williams will play after missing most of the preseason with a lower leg injury. Figurs, a return specialist, has been the team’s No. 3 receiver in Williams’ absence. He is the fastest player on the team but doesn’t have solid hands.

Offensive Line: Starters—LT Jared Gaither, LG Ben Grubbs, C Jason Brown, RG Marshal Yanda, RT Adam Terry. Backups—C/G Chris Chester, OT Mike Kracalik, OT Oniel Cousins, G David Hale.

Heading into training camp, the biggest concerns were at tackle with Gaither and Terry. Now, heading into the regular season, they are even bigger question marks. Gaither and Terry were sidelined for most of the preseason with ankle injuries. It’s unknown whether either one is a legitimate, full-time starter in this league. The interior of the line is really solid. Grubbs has a strong punch off the line. Brown is stout at center. Yanda is a fighter in the trenches. The depth is marginal with Chester and Kracalik.

Defensive Line: Starters—LDE Trevor Pryce, NT Kelly Gregg, RDE Haloti Ngata. Backups—Justin Bannan, Marques Douglas.

This group has the potential to be the best defensive front in the league. The x-factor on defense is Pryce. When he was sidelined for a huge chunk of the season, the Ravens never had the same pass rush without him. Pryce changes games with his ability to penetrate up the middle. The Ravens were still strong at stopping the run because of Gregg and Ngata, two linemen who had Pro Bowl-type seasons. Gregg controls the line with leverage, and Ngata is one of the more agile linemen in the NFL. The Ravens have solid backups in Bannan and Douglas, who was acquired from Tampa Bay before the final preseason game.

Linebackers: Starters—ROLB Jarret Johnson, RILB Ray Lewis, LILB Bart Scott, LOLB Terrell Suggs. Backups—OLB Tavares Gooden, ILB Nick Greisen, OLB Antwan Barnes, ILB Brendon Ayanbadejo.

It’s uncertain how this group will respond after underachieving last season. Lewis is still strong against the run but isn’t the same dominating playmaker from years ago. If the Ravens want to get back to their aggressive and attacking defense, they need Scott and Suggs to get to the quarterback this season. They disappeared as a tandem last season, totaling six sacks after combining for 19 in 2006. Johnson, who replaced Adalius Thomas last season, isn’t a spectacular player but he doesn’t make too many mistakes. Ayanbadejo, a two-time Pro Bowl player, will upgrade the Ravens’ special teams.

Defensive Backs: Starters—LCB Chris McAlister, RCB Samari Rolle, SS Dawan Landry, FS Ed Reed. Backups—CB Fabian Washington, CB Frank Walker, S Tom Zbikowski, S Haruki Nakamura, CB Derrick Martin, CB Corey Ivy.

The Ravens get McAlister and Rolle back from injury this season, but they could suffer a bigger loss in Reed. The four-time Pro Bowl player is uncertain whether he’ll start the season because of a shoulder injury. Without Reed, quarterbacks won’t fear going deep against the Ravens. Landry, the other starting safety, is one of the most physical players in the NFL. The Ravens are hoping that McAlister and Rolle rebound from injury-marred seasons. They have to hold up because their backups have gotten ripped apart in the preseason. Washington is the best of the reserves and he could push Rolle for a starting spot throughout the season. Walker and Ivy have had gotten picked several times in the preseason.

Special Teams: K Matt Stover, P Sam Koch, LS Matt Katula, KOR/PR Yamon Figurs.

Stover won’t convert many kicks beyond 50 yards, but he remains one of the most accurate within 40 at the age of 40. Koch is a solid punter who needs to improve his touch inside the 20-yard line. Figurs is a boom-or-bust type returner. He has the ability to return kicks for a touchdown, but he often struggles at fielding them.

The NFL has suspended Baltimore Ravens cornerback Derrick Martin without pay for the team’s season opener and fined him an additional game check for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The suspension begins Saturday and Martin is ineligible to return to the active roster until Sept. 8, one day after the Ravens’ opening game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

According to a police report, 23-year-old Martin was cited and charged in July with possession of three small bags of marijuana at the Cleveland airport during a random TSA screening while attempting to board a flight. :hhh:

The minor misdemeanor case is the equivalent to a ticket. The maximum penalty is a $150 fine.

Cut by Falcons, Harrington agrees to deal with Ravens :o

The Baltimore Ravens agreed to terms with quarterback Joey Harrington, who was released Friday by the Atlanta Falcons.

Joey Harrington

Harrington

Due to the current uncertainty with their quarterbacks, the Ravens brought in Harrington, Chris Simms (released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Todd Bouman (released by the Jaguars) for workouts Monday and decided to sign Harrington because he has the most recent playing experience.

Troy Smith and Kyle Boller have been sidelined this preseason due to injury and illness. Smith, scheduled to start the third preseason game, has a viral infection and was hospitalized from Thursday to Sunday. Smith has also lost a considerable amount of weight.

Boller is battling an injury to his throwing shoulder and still hasn't been cleared to practice or play. The Ravens also have rookie Joe Flacco and Casey Bramlet on the roster.

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

Yes, Joey Harrington. It was cute how Atlanta let him play that last pre-season game just to try out for the team. Hell, he could be a cripple missing an arm and he'd be better than:
Boller (tendonitis from jacking it too much)
Smith (STD of unknown origin in his tonsils)
Flacco (BlueHen... enough said)

QB Flacco to start opener for Ravens

Sep 1, 8:37 pm EDT

OWINGS MILLS, MARYLAND (TICKER) —The Baltimore Ravens on Monday named rookie quarterback Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback for the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Ravens’ first-round pick and second quarterback taken in the draft behind Matt Ryan, Flacco started Baltimore’s final two preseason games and played well in Thursday’s 13-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Flacco, the 18th overall selection in the draft, completed 8-of-13 passes for 72 yards. He left early in the second quarter after directing a 63-yard drive that produced a field goal. First-year Baltimore coach John Harbaugh had almost no choice but to name the 6-6 Flacco as the starter.

Troy Smith remains sidelined with infected tonsils and Kyle Boller, who lost the starting job to Smith late last season, could be out for several weeks with a shoulder injury.

“Joe is going to be the starter on Sunday,” Harbaugh said. “He’s taken the reps as a starter. It wouldn’t be realistic to have one of those two guys (Boller or Smith) as a starter for sure. If they can back up, I think that would be an upset.”

Flacco enjoyed a stellar career at Delaware after transferring from Pittsburgh. Last season, he led the Blue Hens to the title game of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, where they lost to defending three-time champion Appalachian State.

“It’s faster than I expected, but this is what I wanted all along,” Flacco said. “Things happen funny. I’ve gotten my opportunity. It’s up to me to go out there and play, and it’s up to our offense. It’s all about our offense now. We’re in the regular season, and all these games count.

“We want to go out there and prove we’re a good offense. That’s what we’re going to do this week, starting with Cincinnati.”

The Ravens are coming off a 5-11 season that led to the firing of former coach Brian Billick.

Ravens sign OT Anderson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—After signing his three-year, $11 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens on Friday, offensive tackle Willie Anderson hopes to play in Sunday’s season opener against the team that cut him.

The 6-foot-5, 340-pound former Cincinnati Bengals team captain isn’t expected to start immediately at right tackle, where Adam Terry is atop the depth chart.

“It would be crazy to think that I’m more prepared than those guys right now,” Anderson said. “I’m just trying to recover from being out of work for a week. The good thing about it is we’ll play those guys twice per year.”

The 33-year-old Anderson was cut by the Bengals after refusing to take a pay cut and chose the Ravens over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams.

He received a $1.67 million signing bonus from Baltimore, which cut tight end Edgar Jones to create a roster spot for Anderson.

“The guys in Cincinnati are in shock right now, but I told them to just go ahead and get over it, move on,” Anderson said. “Those guys took it kind of hard. They have been texting me and wishing me good and hating that I’m gone. There’s no animosity between me and the organization. It was just an issue of people given bad info.”

Anderson has started 173 of 181 career games after being drafted in the first round in 1996 out of Auburn, but lost his starting job during training camp to Stacy Andrews.

Anderson is due an $830,000 base salary this season that includes incentives that can boost the deal to $1 million if he plays 40 percent of the snaps. If he triggers that escalator clause, then his total compensation will be $3.5 million this year.

He was due to make $3.1 million from the Bengals before being cut.

“The Bengals didn’t cut me because I couldn’t play, they cut me because I said I didn’t want to be there anymore,” Anderson said. “That was me not wanting to deal with the non-football issues I had to deal with for so long. There were other issues that after 13 years you kind of get tired of dealing with, those non-football issues.”

Anderson’s experience dwarfs the Ravens’ offensive linemen, who are led by center Jason Brown’s 29 career starts. Anderson was limited to a career-low seven games and five starts last season because of injuries, ending his streak of Pro Bowl appearances.

Notes

Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said that running back Willis McGahee (left knee) will be a game-time decision. If he can’t go, then rookie Ray Rice will start in his place. McGahee termed his chances of playing at 50 percent. … Nose guard Kelly Gregg (left knee) said he also will be a game-time decision after participating in practice Friday on a limited basis. “Hopefully, I’ll play,” Gregg said. … Free safety Ed Reed (nerve impingement of his neck and shoulder) is another question mark after missing the preseason. … “It’s just listening to the doctor and trying to be smart about it as much as you can,” Reed said. “If they tell you, it’s going to be a couple of weeks, then you’ve got to take a couple weeks. That’s what they’ve been telling me. It’s very frustrating because you can’t really do anything. If you get out there, you are really at risk.”

I have both on my squad and don't know who to start...

• RB Willis McGahee is considered a game-time decision after being limited all week in practice. He had arthroscopic knee surgery last month and he has been slow to recover. McGahee said his chances of playing are “50-50.” He would be replaced by rookie Ray Rice.

• RB Ray Rice could make his first NFL start, replacing injured Willis McGahee (knee). Rice has averaged over five yards a carry while starting every preseason game. McGahee, who is considered a game-time decision, said his chances of playing are “50-50.”

start rice, sit mcgahee would be my bet, if he's 50/50 how effective could he be if he does in fact play?

Notes

• OT Willie Anderson signed a three-year, $10.5 million deal with Baltimore after getting cut by Cincinnati on Aug. 30. The 12-year veteran was hobbled by injuries last year and was limited to seven games. San Diego and Tampa Bay were also interested in signing the former Bengal.

• DT Marques Douglas is expected to start at defensive tackle. He would be taking the spot of Haloti Ngata, who is shifting to nose tackle for the injured Kelly Gregg (knee).

• WR Demetrius Williams has returned from a lower leg injury and has taken back the team’s No. 3 receiver job. If he plays well early, he could compete against Mark Clayton for the starting job.

• QB Todd Bouman will be the primary backup since Troy Smith is out with a tonsil infection. Bouman hasn’t thrown a regular-season pass since 2005.

• FS Jim Leonhard is expected to start in place of Ed Reed, who is dealing with neck and shoulder injuries. He has been solid in the preseason, which earned him the job over rookies Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura.

• CB Chris McAlister has returned to practice after missing most of the preseason with a knee injury. He had a full practice, which means he will start the season opener.

I have to give credit where it's due. The Ravens didn't live up to what everyone expected of them. Fuck-o did pretty well for his first real game, and he got a ton of help from his offensive line. And the defense... they steamrolled the fucking Bengals. They played good ball, I hate to say it.

Ravens ride defense, Flacco to win over Bengals

By DAVID GINSBURG, AP Sports Writer 1 hour, 47 minutes ago

BALTIMORE (AP)—The Baltimore Ravens successfully launched a new era, for coach John Harbaugh and rookie quarterback Joe Flacco.

The festive occasion was made complete by a few familiar friends: Rex Ryan and the Baltimore defense.

Flacco ran for a 38-yard touchdown in his first NFL start, and the Ravens held the Cincinnati Bengals to 154 yards and eight first downs Sunday in a 17-10 victory.

“It’s a thrill,” Harbaugh said. “I’m appreciative of (owner) Steve Bisciotti, (general manager) Ozzie Newsome and the rest of the Ravens organization for giving a no-name a chance to be a head coach in this league. We have a long way to go, but this is a good start.”

Thrust into a starting role because of a season-ending shoulder injury to Kyle Boller and Troy Smith’s infected tonsils, Flacco deftly operated within the system of new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. The rookie went 15-for-29 for 129 yards and no interceptions, and his touchdown run put Baltimore (1-0) up 17-3 in the third quarter.

“This is just a beginning for Joe,” Harbaugh said.

If Flacco was unnerved playing in his first NFL game, he sure didn’t look like it. Or feel like it.

“It’s just football. It’s a lot of fun, though, just like it’s always been,” said Flacco, the 18th overall pick in the NFL draft. “I think our offense was in control all day. And obviously we had a lot of help from our defense.”

Ryan, retained as defensive coordinator when Harbaugh replaced Brian Billick, put together a game plan that rendered the Cincinnati offense helpless. Chris Perry gained 37 yards on 18 carries and Carson Palmer was 10-for-25 for 99 yards and an interception.

Chad Ocho Cinco, forced by the NFL to wear Chad Johnson on his jersey, was held to one catch for 22 yards. He praised the blitz-oriented defense deployed by Ryan.

“Two thumbs up to him and what they did today. It was unbelievable, and I told him after the game,” Ocho Cinco said. “I don’t know what they were playing. That’s some playground defense.”

Cincinnati’s lone touchdown came on a 65-yard fumble return by Johnathan Joseph. Palmer couldn’t take the Bengals (0-1) closer than the Baltimore 17, and that drive ended with an interception.

“We got outplayed,” he said. “It was just an ugly game offensively. When you score three points, it’s never good. And our three points were on a two-minute drive. It’s a sick feeling, and it’s going to feel even sicker when we watch the film.”

Flacco’s touchdown run, which came on a rollout to his right, was 13 yards farther than his longest run at the University of Delaware. Baltimore’s other touchdown came on a double reverse, a trick play that represented a marked departure from the conservative offense employed by Billick.

After Joseph’s return of a fumble by rookie Ray Rice made it 17-10 with 10:15 left, the Bengals faced a fourth-and-1 at the Baltimore 25. Perry ran into Haloti Ngata for a 1-yard loss, and Baltimore held the ball the rest of way.

“Either they drive you back or you drive them back,” Ngata said. “That time I made the play.”

On Baltimore’s final drive, Le’Ron McClain ran for 40 yards. He finished with 86 yards rushing; he had 18 as a rookie fullback last year.

“I’m a fullback first, running back second,” he said.

Cincinnati’s only points in the first half came on a 43-yard field goal by Shayne Graham with five seconds left that made it 10-3.

Ravens tight end Todd Heap lost a fumble on the second play from scrimmage, but Cincinnati failed to capitalize. On the Bengals’ second series, a pass deflected off the hands of Ocho Cinco was tipped and intercepted by Chris McAlister.

The Ravens then moved 78 yards, the last 42 on the surprising double reverse. After Flacco handed off to Derrick Mason, who was running around right end, Mason flipped the ball to Mark Clayton running the other way. Clayton weaved into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

Late in the half, McAlister recovered a fumble by Perry at the Cincinnati 40 to set up a field goal by Matt Stover.

Notes

Ocho Cinco has at least one catch in 93 straight games, tying the team record set by Carl Pickens. … Baltimore has gone an NFL-best 20 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher. … Cincinnati was denied its fourth straight season-opening win.

WINNERS

Rookie quarterbacks Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco. Striking in different ways, they became the first pair of rookie quarterbacks to win in Week 1 since Archie Manning and Jim Plunkett pulled off the feat in 1971. Ryan’s first NFL pass for the Falcons – a stunning 62-yard zipper of a touchdown to Michael Jenkins – was the perfect way to move past the Michael Vick era. And while Ryan was protected by a fantastic running game (313 yards between Turner and backup Jerious Norwood), he was sharp (9-of-13) in limited attempts. As for Flacco’s debut for the Baltimore Ravens, he showed grit: throwing the key lead block on Mark Clayton’s 42-yard touchdown run, and then chugging downfield on his own for a 38-yard scrambling touchdown.

LOSERS

The Cincinnati Bengals. The offense looks all wrong. Carson Palmer’s broken nose in the preseason – along with injuries to receivers Chad Ocho Cinco and TJ Houshmandzadeh – clearly cost the Bengals when it comes to timing. Even more, the line hasn’t looked right since losing Eric Steinbach in free agency before last season. And the team once again started a season limp on defense, registering zero sacks on the Ravens’ Joe Flacco. You’re not going to find a bigger, more inexperienced target than a 6-foot-6, 235 pound rookie making his first NFL start. Marvin Lewis and his defensive résumé should be embarrassed.

Ravens Q&A with Mike Preston
Baltimore Sun columnist answers readers' questions about the Ravens' 17-10 win over the Bengals

Baltimoresun.com staff
12:32 PM EDT, September 9, 2008

Scott: Do you think Joe Flacco will remain the starting quarterback regardless of the health of Troy Smith?

Mike Preston: I think as long as Flacco makes progress, regardless of wins or losses, he remains the starter. We all knew he was going to be the starter one day, it just happened to be sooner than anyone expected because of injuries. He's a rookie and I expect him to go through some growing pains. He might even lose the position before the season is over, but it's his job down the road. I just hope he doesn't get hurt because I still have some questions about the offensive line.

But, it was a good start.

Dennis, Upper Marlboro: I know this was only the first game but I love what I see from the offense so far. I love the creativity and the commitment to the run. I love Flacco's poise. What do you think about the new offense and Flacco?

Mike Preston: I've written about that for the past two days. You're right, it was only one game and it was against the Cincinnati Bengals. But, choo-choo, I'm on board this offensive train. The Ravens still lack some big-play personnel, but at least the scheming and strategy is sound.

John: What type of role do you foresee for Le'Ron McClain when Willis McGahee returns and can we expect a bigger workload for McClain all year? And how does Ray Rice factor into all of this when all three are healthy?

Mike Preston: Willis McGahee is a very competitive player and he'll step his game up now knowing that he has players behind him who can take his job. McGahee and Rice are interchangeable. They'll split time but I wouldn't be surprised to see more of Rice as the season went on. McClain is a luxury. I think he'll be used in short-yardage situations and for late in the game when the Ravens have a lead. He can wear defenses down, and he reminds me of Bam Morris. Bam was a big back who had the quickness of smaller runners. He took little, tiny steps but was always going forward. Bam even gained yards running backward pulling defensive players with him like McClain did Sunday.

Brian: It looked like tight end Todd Heap couldn't even catch a cold Sunday. He had one reception for five yards. Should this be a concern for the Ravens past Week 1 or do you think he'll turn it around?

Mike Preston: There was no one out there more embarrassed by his performance than Heap. He'll rebound. He's too great of a player not to respond. Heap needs to learn that he has to practice. Pitchers become great by getting on the mound. Hitters become great by getting into the batters box. Receivers can only retain greatness by catching the ball in PRACTICE.

Michael: Did the Ravens' offensive line play better than you expected or was that due to the lack of talent on the Cincinnati Bengals' defensive line, or a combination of the two? What do you see for our offensive line if they achieve continuity, barring injury?

Mike Preston: It was a statement performance by both the Ravens' offensive line and the Bengals' poor secondary. First, the Ravens' offensive line started to gel a little bit at the end of the last preseason game. The interior three are good, smashmouth players, but the tackles have to prove themselves. Both Adam Terry and Jared Gaither have athleticism, but they just need time at one position, instead of switching back and forth. I think the Ravens have a really good offensive line coach in John Matsko, and before the year is over, it's going to be a good, solid group heading into 2009.

The Bengals stink. Not only did they allow the Ravens to push them around, but they quit going into the fourth quarter.

Now, with that said, I like the potential of the offensive line. I like the way the Ravens schemed to give their tackles help on both sides in pass protection. In another year or so, this could be one of the better offensive lines in the league.

John: What in the world was Bengals coach Marvin Lewis thinking? The Ravens are known for their stout run defense and somewhat questionable secondary, especially with Ed Reed and Samari Rolle hurting. Why did Lewis play into their hands, shortening the game for Flacco and foolishly trying to run the ball?

Mike Preston: Just from my own observations, I think the Bengals tried to run the ball because the Ravens took away the deep passes, and at times had their safeties 20 to 25 yards off the line of scrimmage. The Ravens have played this defense against the Bengals before, but this time Carson Palmer didn't drop those passes over the heads of the linebackers and in front of the safeties. The Ravens did a good job of bracketing both Bengals receivers on the outside.

Defensively, there was nothing the Bengals could do up front. When a team physically pushes you around like the Ravens did with the Bengals on Sunday, you pack up, get on the bus, go to the airport, get on the plane and fly home.

That's exactly what the Bengals did.

Stefen: This could be Lewis' last season at the helm if Cincinnati doesn't win this year. Do you think the Bengals have to make the playoffs for Lewis to avoid the firing squad? Do you think they will make the playoffs?

Mike Preston: I don't want to make judgments after one game. It's possible Lewis could turn the Bengals around. But if I were him, I'd keep my resume in hand, and be nice to people.

Daniel: What did you think of the performance of the secondary and how did Marques Douglasperform filling in for Kelly Gregg?

Mike Preston: The entire defense played well. You can't go goo-ga ga over the performance because the Bengals were bad, but it was just a good, sound performance by the entire team. The Ravens played hard, and they fought through some adversity where a year ago they would have given up. I can't single out one group or person because everybody played well.

Josh: How would you assess John Harbaugh's first regular-season game as an NFL head coach? Was there anything that stood out or surprised you?

Mike Preston: One thing stood out: John wore a purple shirt while the rest of the coaches were in white.

Just joking. Other than that, no. John delegates most of the coaching to his assistants and that's the way it should be. He is a rookie, and he's getting on-the-job training. Harbaugh is fortunate because he has an excellent coaching staff.

Vinnie: What did you make of all the dropped passes? Was it because some of these players did not participate in minicamp or was it something else?

Mike Preston: Regardless of how many years you play, the first game makes everyone a little nervous. There is tension, anxiety and high intensity. The situation with the dropped balls will correct itself. For now, I'll just chalk it up to first-game jitters.

Ravens Team Report

Inside Slant

A day after leading the Ravens to a 17-10 season-opening victory, rookie quarterback Joe Flacco received his reward.

“Flacco will be the starter this week,” coach John Harbaugh said at Monday’s news conference.

The 18th overall pick in the Ravens’ draft, Flacco was rushed into the starting role because the team’s other quarterbacks—Troy Smith (tonsil infection) and Kyle Boller (season-ending shoulder injury)—were sidelined with medical issues.

In his NFL debut, Flacco was 15-for-29 passing for 129 yards. He ran for a 38-yard touchdown and provided the key block in the Ravens’ other touchdown.

Harbaugh would not say whether Flacco would remain the starter for the rest of the season.

“None of us have a crystal ball,” Harbaugh said, “but he’ll be the starter against Houston.”

If the Ravens want to have success against tougher defenses than the Bengals, their rookie quarterback has to keep managing the game like a veteran. Unlike many quarterbacks making their NFL debuts, Flacco never put the Ravens in a position to lose the game, finishing with no turnovers and no sacks.

He was the only NFL quarterback who started and finished a game on Sunday that accomplished this feat (Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb didn’t have a turnover or get sacked but he was rested late in a 38-3 rout of St. Louis). Last season, there were only two games where a Ravens starting quarterback had no turnovers and no sacks.

“I think he had already earned a lot of confidence because of the way he had conducted himself and the way he prepared,” Harbaugh said. “Our guys were not surprised by the way he handled himself. But certainly by winning the football game, the players were excited for him.”

But the Ravens didn’t forget that Flacco is a rookie.

“In true NFL and Ravens fashion, he was brought down to earth by the players on a regular basis today,” Harbaugh said. “They were letting him know that it’s a team game. He’s receptive to that because that’s the kind of guy he is. He had a lot of fun with it.”

Flacco continues to impress the Ravens’ coaching staff and players with his poise.

There were times he could have gotten frustrated, from Todd Heap’s early fumble to a handful of dropped passes. But Flacco remained composed and didn’t force passes. This is important for the Ravens because offenses often take their personalities from their quarterbacks.

“I would say there are a lot of things he did well but nothing that surprised us,” Harbaugh said. “You watch him in practice and in the preseason games, we kind of expected him to do the things well that he did.

“All of us had the question mark: Would the game be too fast for him the first game? And it wasn’t. That was a good thing to see.”

Notes, Quotes

• Mark Clayton’s 42-yard, double-reverse touchdown scamper was only the second rushing touchdown of his career—and the longest.

Along the way, the wide receiver got some help from rookie quarterback Joe Flacco, who sent linebacker Dhani Jones stumbling to the turf to clear a path for Clayton.

“It looked good in practice, and it certainly looked good today,” Clayton said. “Coach tells us if you don’t have the ball, you’re a blocker, and that goes for all 11 (players). Everybody was able to make some good blocks, and I was able to get the ball in the end zone.”

• Baltimore native and Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony was the honorary captain during the coin toss before the season opener.

“It’s a big deal to be at the Ravens’ first game,” said Anthony, who brought the gold medal he won as part of the victorious U.S. men’s basketball team. “I never thought I would be here for the coin toss. You can’t ask for nothing better than that.”

• Baltimore improved to 14-11 all-time against Cincinnati, including a 10-3 mark at home as the Ravens snapped a three-game losing streak to the Bengals.

• The Ravens deactivated quarterback Troy Smith (illness), offensive tackle Willie Anderson, linebacker Tavares Gooden, offensive tackle Oniel Cousins, offensive guard David Hale, wide receiver Marcus Smith (separated right shoulder), cornerback Evan Oglesby and nose tackle Kelly Gregg (left knee).

• The Ravens’ game captains were linebackers Ray Lewis and Brendon Ayanbadejo and wide receiver Derrick Mason.

• A pair of former Ravens, offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden and Mike Flynn, watched part of the game from the press box.

Strategy And Personnel

PLAYER NOTES

• RB Willis McGahee is expected to return as the Ravens’ starting running back. Coach John Harbaugh said Monday that he was “confident” about McGahee coming back this week from a knee injury. But McGahee’s playing time could be reduced because of the success of rookie Ray Rice and especially Le’Ron McClain.

• NT Kelly Gregg could return to the starting lineup this week, coach John Harbaugh said. Gregg was the only starter on defense who was inactive Sunday. He had arthroscopic knee surgery during training camp.

• LB Brendon Ayanbadejo could be sidelined this week after sustaining a leg contusion Sunday. He was injured in the second half and did not return. He is one of the Ravens’ best special teams players.

• TE Todd Heap sustained a back contusion but he is expected to start Sunday. He was injured in the second half but returned after missing a few plays. Heap, however, moved around slowly so he likely won’t be at full strength.

• CB Corey Ivy said he expects to play Sunday with an ankle injury. The nickel back was on crutches after the game. On Monday, Ivy said it was a minor sprain and he would play the next game.

REPORT CARD VS. BENGALS

Passing Offense: B—Rookie quarterback Joe Flacco didn’t play like a rookie. He finished with a less-than-stellar stat line: 15-for-29 passing for 129 yards and a 63.7 passer rating. But the key was he didn’t turn the ball over and turned up the intensity when it was required. Flacco was helped by his offensive line, which didn’t give up a sack.

Rushing Offense: A—The Ravens didn’t play Willis McGahee because of a knee injury, and they didn’t need the starting running back. The Ravens turned early to rookie Ray Rice (64 yards on 22 carries) before going late in the game to Le’Ron McClain (86 yards on 19 carries). The Ravens’ 229 yards rushing was the sixth-most in team history. It ranked as the most since the Ravens’ 2000 Super Bowl season.

Pass Defense: A—With an assortment of blitz packages, the Ravens sacked Carson Palmer twice and hit him countless more times. Palmer’s passer rating of 35.2 was a career low. The Ravens moved linebacker Bart Scott at times on receiver Chad Johnson to set a physical tone. Johnson was limited to one catch for 22 yards. Chris McAlister had an interception deep in Ravens territory.

Rush Defense: A—Even without nose tackle Kelly Gregg, the Ravens’ front seven dominated the Bengals. In his first game since taking over for Rudi Johnson, Chris Perry was held to 2.1 yards per carry. Ray Lewis and Haloti Ngata made great short-yardage stands.

Special Teams: C-plus—Yamon Figurs’ punt return for a touchdown was called back because of a penalty, and the Ravens allowed a 44-yard kickoff return. Matt Stover missed a 47-yard field-goal attempt that sailed wide left. Punter Sam Koch netted 46 yards on five punts.

Coaching: A—John Harbaugh had a successful debut as the Ravens’ head coach, establishing a new physical tone with the team. Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron kept a smart game plan with Flacco, using quick-hitting passes to limit the rookie quarterback’s decision-making. Defensive coordinator Rex Ryan confused the Bengals with several complicated blitz packages.

Gaither ready for the rush
Raven has had success against Texans' Williams

By Jamison Hensley | jamison.hensley@baltsun.com
September 11, 2008

As Jared Gaither prepares to take on one of the NFL's best pass rushers, teammates are confident that the Ravens' young offensive tackle is ready for the formidable test.

What few Ravens know is that Gaither has already taken on the challenge of blocking the Houston Texans' Mario Williams a couple of years ago and succeeded.

When Gaither was a freshman at Maryland in 2005, he watched Williams carry North Carolina State's defense with sack after sack.

It was enough to prompt Gaither to suggest a position change.

"It was the third quarter and it was basically crunch time," Gaither said. "I told the coach that we're not losing this game and I wanted to move to the other side."

Flipping from left to right tackle, Gaither bottled Williams up the rest of the game, holding the nation's premier pass rusher without a sack.

The performance was Gaither's breakthrough game in college.

"If a lot of people didn't know about me, they knew after the game," Gaither said.

While Gaither can recall many details from that showdown, Williams drew a blank from that game.

"I really don't remember a lot of individual stuff that happened with anyone, actually," Williams said in a conference call with Baltimore reporters. "I try to forget about old stuff like that."

Just months after that matchup with Gaither, Williams was selected as the top pick in the 2006 NFL draft.

The decision to take Williams instead of running back Reggie Bush was criticized by the national media and local fans.

Now, the Texans are taking pride in that pick.

Williams had 14 sacks last season, which was the third-most in the NFL and accounted for 45percent of Houston's sack total. He was the one of the few highlights in the Texans' season opener with two sacks, three quarterback pressures and one forced fumble.

"I think [the early scrutiny] was very difficult for him, but players like that are the ones that become great players," said Texans coach Gary Kubiak, who compared Williams' situation to the one quarterback John Elway faced in Denver. "The growing pains he's had to go through, the things that he's had to endure, are what have made him better. I think you'll see him play a long, long time and be very effective."

Williams has been the NFL's best pass rusher recently, recording the most sacks (13) of any player since Oct.1, 2007. He has had at least one sack in seven of his past eight games, including three multi-sack performances.

If the Ravens want rookie quarterback Joe Flacco to remain comfortable, Gaither has to step up again to slow Williams.

Gaither had a respectable start in the unenviable job of replacing Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden. In the Ravens' season opener, Gaither shut down the Bengals' Frostee Rucker, who had no sacks and no quarterback hits.

"As we all know in this business, those tackles pretty much dictate what the quarterback can do back there and how much time he has," wide receiver Derrick Mason said. "Gaither has a huge job, but he's up for it."

This could be the biggest matchup of the week, if just on size alone.

Williams, 23, is 6 feet 6, 283 pounds, a fluid athlete who comes off the edge with speed and power.

Gaither, 22, is 6-9, 330 pounds, a massive blocker who has the size and athleticism to shield the blind side of his quarterback.

In summing up what it takes to keep Williams in check, Gaither said: "It's just determination and reckless abandon. The caliber of player he is, I'm going to face those type of players all year. You have to have a plan, stick to it and shut guys down.

"I'm going to bring some different things to the table that he might not have seen."

Blocking Williams is only part of the problem. Finding him is another.

The Texans try to move him from side to side so offenses can't shift their protections at him.

Even the Ravens' defenders know the importance of locating Williams and keeping him away from Flacco.

"I don't know if he is necessarily faster than anybody else, but he is way bigger than everybody on the football field," defensive lineman Trevor Pryce said. "It's almost unfair when you put a guy that size playing defensive end and not inside where you can control him. I'm glad I don't have to block him."

But Gaither has always wanted that challenge, whether it was a couple of years ago or this Sunday.

Injury report WEEK 2 BALTIMORE @ HOUSTON

The Ravens released their second injury report of the week, and for the second consecutive day, cornerback Fabian Washington (neck), linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (leg contusion) and quarterback Troy Smith (tonsil infection) did not practice.

They were joined by defensive tackle Kelly Gregg (arthroscopic knee surgery) and return specialist Yamon Figurs (hamstring), who sat out.

Left offensive tackle Jared Gaither (ankle) was downgraded from full participation to limited. Defensive end Trevor Pryce (back) was added to the injury report, practicing on a limited basis.

Players who fully participated in practice included cornerbacks Chris McAlister (swollen right knee) and Corey Ivy (sprained right ankle), free safety Ed Reed (nerve impingement), tight end Todd Heap (back contusion), running back Willis McGahee (arthroscopic knee surgery), center Jason Brown (ankle) and fullback Le’Ron McClain (ankle).

On the Texans side, running back Ahman Green (sprained left ankle) did not practice for the second straight day. Three other starters -- defensive tackle Travis Johnson (knee), right offensive tackle Eric Winston (ankle) and left guard Chester Pitts (ankle) -- were limited in practice.

"Corbett also says Flacco was recently mistaken for swimmer Michael Phelps on an elevator:

Another Raven, rookie quarterback Joe Flacco, was getting a different kind of attention last weekend. The 6-6, 235-pound Flacco was mistaken Saturday night for record-breaking swimmer and Baltimore native, Michael Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympic Games."

Ravens-Texans to play on Monday night

HOUSTON (AP)—The Houston Texans’ game against the Baltimore Ravens was moved to Monday night at 8:30 p.m. EDT because of Hurricane Ike.

The game was originally scheduled for 4:15 p.m. EDT Sunday.

Hurricane Ike was headed toward the Texas coast as a category 3 storm on Thursday. It was expected to make landfall between Houston and Corpus Christi sometime early Saturday morning.

The game will be broadcast on CBS stations in Houston, Baltimore and Washington as well as several smaller secondary markets.

The Ravens are scheduled to fly to Texas on Sunday afternoon.

“We understand completely why the change had to be made,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “We’ll adjust our schedules.”

This isn’t the first time a game time has been changed because of an impending hurricane. In 2004, a game in Miami between the Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers was moved from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. to allow Hurricane Jeanne to pass through the area.

Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron worked for the Chargers in 2003 when California wildfires caused a game against the Miami Dolphins to be moved to Monday night at Arizona State’s Sun Devil Stadium.

“We all have an understanding that it’s a blessing to coach or play in an NFL game,” he said. “Just tell us when the game is and where to play it and we’ll play it.”

Texans tight end Owen Daniels said the hurricane isn’t a distraction and is a bit intrigued at the prospect of going through one. He has a degree in atmospheric and oceanic sciences and hopes to be a television weatherman one day.

“I would say (I’m) more fascinated and interested to know what it’s actually like or what it looks like or what it feels like than scared by what is going to happen,” he said. “I think if we were out closer to the gulf I would be a little more scared.”

The Texans moved their scheduled Friday practice to Thursday night to allow players to have Friday off to take care of their homes and families.

Ike forces postponement of Texans-Ravens game

HOUSTON (Ticker) - Damage from Hurricane Ike has forced the postponement of Monday night’s game between the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens, according to a published report

Ike has rendered Reliant Stadium unsuitable for the game to be played, according to the Houston Chronicle.

“The facility will not be usable,” Shey Guinn, president of SMG, the company that manages Reliant Park, told the newspaper. “There’s some structural damage to the roof. Part of it is off.”

The NFL already had switched the game from Sunday afternoon to Monday night in anticipation of the storm.

Guinn said the league will decide when and where the game will be played.

The Chronicle reported that neither team will comment on the postponement until they hear from NFL officials. A conference call is scheduled between all the parties later Saturday.

The Texans have two roads games before returning home on October 5. It is unclear whether Reliant Stadium will be ready by then.

“There’s also some other damage on the property caused by wind and water,” Guinn said. “We’re in the process of assessing the damage.”

Tough break for Ravens

By Jamison Hensley and Mike Preston
September 15, 2008

The postponement forced by Hurricane Ike has turned the Ravens' schedule into perhaps the most demanding in the NFL.

There are 15 straight games without a break. There are five road games in six weeks. And there are three road games in a row against teams that were a combined 16-8 at home last season.

But there were few complaints by the Ravens when likening their challenges to those faced by the citizens of Houston.

"The schedule is unfortunate, but we understand," Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan said. "It's really small in the grand scheme of things when you consider what happened in Houston and what those families are going through. You have to keep it in perspective."

Instead of relocating the Ravens' game in Houston to New Orleans or Atlanta this week, the NFL decided to postpone it to Nov.9 by rearranging bye weeks.

The NFL pushed the Ravens-Texans game to Week10, which had been the Ravens' week off. The Houston- Cincinnati Bengals game, which was set for Week10, was moved to Week8, the bye period for the Texans and Bengals.

That means the Ravens and Texans have to play 15 straight weeks without a week off.

No other team in the NFL has to play more than 13 games in a row without a bye.

"It was a hurricane … and there is nothing you can do about it," Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle said. "You just have to play it out. That schedule would be tough on anybody. You don't have to say anything about it because it's self-explanatory."

The toughest part of the schedule comes from Oct.12 to Nov.16, when the Ravens play one home game in six weeks.

The stretch begins with road games at Indianapolis and Miami. After a home game against the Oakland Raiders, the Ravens travel to Cleveland, Houston and New York to play the Giants in consecutive weeks.

The Ravens haven't faced such a road challenge since their 2000 Super Bowl season, when they began with five of seven games away from home. The Ravens began 5-2 despite that road-heavy start.

"We're a very resilient team, as you've seen in the past," kicker Matt Stover said, "and [coach John] Harbaugh's done a nice job of preparing our mind-set so that we can adjust to whatever's in front of us."

While the Ravens might be able to get over this mentally, it is a tougher hurdle physically.

On a scheduled bye week, the Ravens could have anywhere from four to six days off. They could go back home to visit family or take a mini-vacation.

Because the Ravens had planned to play this week, they spent the week practicing for the Texans. Harbaugh has given the players off three days to try to give them a break.

Linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo called this scenario "the worst bye week in bye-week history."

When told of the new obstacles on the schedule - only the Chicago Bears have to play three straight road games like the Ravens - some players just shrugged.

"Sure, it's going to be a big challenge, but it can't be any bigger than last year," center Jason Brown said. "We had three Monday night games and we played three games on the West Coast. We've had big challenges before."

Cornerback Derrick Martin said he had planned to spend his bye week visiting family and friends in Colorado. Instead, he'll be in the midst of the Ravens' 15-game stretch.

"It's just one of those things that you've got to do," he said. "We had it set up nice where we had the bye week in the middle of the season and now we have to go 15 straight. It's just one of those things that you can't control. You just have to go play football."

Martin said he didn't think the challenge was too daunting a hill to climb.

"It's still football when you get onto the field," he said. "We'll just keep practicing, and if Coach Harbaugh takes care of us, we'll be all right."

REED FOUNDATION: The Ed Reed Eye of the Hurricane Foundation will hold its benefit, "A Night in New Orleans," tonight at 6 at the Valley Mansion in Cockeysville, as originally scheduled. The benefit had been moved to tomorrow night when the Ravens were scheduled to play in Houston. It will feature the group Maze, with Frankie Beverly, and Cajun cuisine. All proceeds from sales and donations go the Reed's nonprofit foundation. The Ravens safety, a Louisiana native and former Miami Hurricane, organized NFL player donations for victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. His foundation is working to help Booker T. Washington Middle School in Baltimore transition into a school for the arts and music.

Ravens Team Report

Troy Smith has been cleared to resume light conditioning, but it’s unknown when the Ravens quarterback will return to the field from his bout with severe tonsillitis.

The former Heisman Trophy winner has not practiced with the team since coming down with his illness on Aug. 22. He has lost 20 pounds while battling a blood clot in the back of his tonsils, which led to an infection in his lung.

“This is extraordinarily unlucky,” said Dr. Andrew Tucker, the Ravens’ head physician. “It a rare complication of a very severe tonsil infection.”

The Ravens plan to start rookie quarterback Joe Flacco on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Todd Bouman remains the backup, and Casey Bramlet is on the practice squad as the No. 3 quarterback.

Tucker said there is no timetable on Smith’s return, and team specialists will evaluate him on a week to week basis. Recent tests showed that the blood clot and infection have improved, Tucker said.

Coach John Harbaugh indicated the Ravens aren’t planning to place Smith on injured reserve, which would end his season.

“We’re pretty certain that he’s going to be back playing for the bulk of the season,” Harbaugh said.

In his second season, Smith was primed to take over the team’s quarterback competition after being named the starter for the Ravens’ third preseason game.

But as the Ravens were traveling to St. Louis, Smith became ill and watched the game from the team hotel. A day after the Ravens returned, he was diagnosed with tonsillitis.

Smith was progressing until the Ravens’ preseason finale, when he was taken to Union Memorial Hospital after complaining of chest pain. It was found that he had a clot in a major vein in his neck, which sent an infection into his lung.

Tucker said Smith, who is taking oral antibiotics, is expected to make a full recovery.

“Troy’s health was never in any danger,” said Tucker, who acknowledged he has never dealt with such an illness. “But this must be regarded as a serious infection and treated with close monitoring.”

As a rookie last season, Smith went 1-1 as a starter, completing 53 percent for 370 yards and two touchdowns. He impressed the veteran players with his poise and confidence.

It was difficult to judge Smith this preseason because he only attempted 18 passes. He completed half of them for 113 yards, throwing no touchdowns and one interception.

When Smith is ready to play again, it’s unknown whether he will take over for Bouman as the backup quarterback or be given a chance to compete against Flacco for the starting job.

“We think he’s a heck of a quarterback and he’s going to make our team stronger when he comes back,” Harbaugh said. “(The decision) is going to be partly medical and football strategy—what role can he play to help us win, where Joe is at and where the offense is at. I know one thing: when he comes back, it’s going to be a big plus for us. When he can compete at full strength, it’s going to make a stronger team. To what extent, we’ll just have to see when the time comes.”

Notes, Quotes

• Ravens coach John Harbaugh isn’t complaining about the Ravens’ reshuffled schedule.

The Ravens have to play five road games in six weeks, something no other NFL team has to face.

“To be honest, we’re looking forward to it,” Harbaugh said. “It’s going to be an opportunity and it’s going to be a challenge. That’ll be something we take on with relish and attack it with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.”

• Willie Anderson, who signed with the Ravens before the season opener, is expected to play against the Cleveland Browns. It is unknown whether he’ll unseat Adam Terry as the starting right tackle.

“He’s in the mix,” Harbaugh said.

• After Harbaugh won his first game as an NFL head coach, he received a call from Atlanta’s Mike Smith, a fellow rookie coach.

So, Harbaugh returned the favor, calling Washington’s Jim Zorn after he won his first game.

“That was an honor to be able to call him and do that,” Harbaugh said.

Strategy And Personnel

PLAYER NOTES

• QB Troy Smith has been cleared to resume light conditioning work. He will not be placed on IR at this point. Smith probably won’t be promoted beyond backup.

• NT Kelly Gregg appears extremely questionable for Sunday’s game at this time. He didn’t practice at the end of last week, showing he has had a setback. He is one of the keys to the Ravens’ running game. He would be replaced by Justin Bannan.

• CB Fabian Washington is questionable because he didn’t practice all last week. He is the team’s nickel back and would strengthen the pass defense if he does return. He is an improvement over Corey Ivy, his replacement.

• WR Demetrius Williams needed this impromptu break. He was questionable for Sunday’s game after injuring his hamstring late last week. But this rest should get him close to full strength for this Sunday’s game against the Browns.

• OT Willie Anderson will be active for Sunday’s game but his role is undefined. Asked if Anderson would start at right tackle, coach John Harbaugh said, “I don’t know. He’s in the mix.”

REPORT CARD AFTER 1 GAME

Passing Offense: B—Rookie quarterback Joe Flacco will probably experience growing pains, but he has already shown more poise than previous first-round pick Kyle Boller. The game—and situations—just don’t get too big for him. He also has shown more mobility than many expected. The next step is delivering more big plays and looking downfield. The offensive line has to continue its solid pass protection.

Rushing Offense: B—Willis McGahee has returned slower than expected from a knee injury. But the Ravens have found viable alternatives with Ray Rice and Le’Ron McClain. This area has to be an area of strength to keep pressure off Flacco. The Ravens can run in between the tackles because the interior of the offensive line is tough.

Pass Defense: B—The Ravens will be able to slow the best passing teams as long as cornerbacks Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle stay healthy. Rolle is still quick enough to cover the fast receivers, and McAlister is physical enough to handle the big wide-outs. The Ravens got stronger with the return of safety Ed Reed, who is still less than full strength with a neck injury.

Rush Defense: A—The Ravens remain stout up front, which is not a surprise because their run defense has been one of the best over the past decade.

Ray Lewis IS as dominant as in previous years and can still chase down running backs. Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata should be a Pro Bowl performer this season. Once the Ravens get back nose tackle Kelly Gregg (knee), it will be hard to establish any ground game against this defense.

Special Teams: C—Yamon Figurs is a dangerous returner but he is battling a hamstring injury. Matt Stover is one of the consistent kickers in the NFL, even though he missed a field-goal attempt in the season opener. Punter Sam Koch is getting more distance on his kicks.

Coaching: B—John Harbaugh has instilled a tough mindset, which showed up in the season opener. He is preaching a team-first mentality and more discipline, which was absent at times under former coach Brian Billick. Cam Cameron and Rex Ryan are two of the most creative coordinators in the NFL.

Anderson tackles Ravens playbook, debuts Sunday

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—Willie Anderson will experience a new sensation against a familiar foe Sunday.

Anderson knows all about facing the Cleveland Browns, arguably his most hated rival when he played right tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals. This confrontation, however, will be decidedly different.

For the first time in his 13-year career, Anderson will pull a Baltimore Ravens jersey over his shoulder pads before confronting the Browns.

Released by the Bengals before the season because he refused to take a pay cut, Anderson signed a three-year, $11 million contract with the Ravens on Sept. 5. The four-time Pro Bowler sat out the opener because he wasn’t acquainted with the playbook, but he got an extra week to study when Hurricane Ike postponed Baltimore’s game in Houston last week.

“I’ve had two weeks to kind of get settled in, learn the ins and outs of this offense, meet my teammates and see the city a little bit,” Anderson said Wednesday. “It’s been a good transition.”

Anderson has blended in well with the Ravens, perhaps because he respected them and they admired him. After banging helmets against each other for 12 years, both sides are happy to be working for a common cause.

“I went against him when he was at Cincinnati, so if anyone’s a big Willie Anderson fan, it’s definitely me. I know what he brings, I know what he’s capable of,” Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs said.

In the opener against Cincinnati, the Ravens ran for 229 yards and did not allow a sack. The addition of Anderson makes a good line even better.

“He brings tremendous veteran experience,” center Jason Brown said. “He’s a Pro Bowler, which means he’s one of the best at his position. That means a lot to us. Of course, we lost that veteran presence with Jonathan Ogden (retiring), but bringing in Willie definitely gives us more confidence. He’s already picked up this offense and is making a difference.”

It didn’t take long for Anderson to ditch his Cincinnati roots and embrace the idea of being with Baltimore.

“What I’ve been impressed with is that he’s really gone out of his way to become a Raven and become part of this program, and to mentor a couple of those young tackles and young linemen,” coach John Harbaugh said.

Although many fans believe that football players hate the guys on the other team, Anderson said that emotion was limited to the three hours he spent on the field during a game.

“We looked at this organization with the utmost respect. We kind of envied them a little bit,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons I wanted to come here and take a look. I know the guys on this team. We battled against each other for 12 years, and it’s a good fit.”

Anderson is a perfect fit for a young line in need of experience. He has started 173 of 181 career games since being drafted in the first round in 1996 out of Auburn; in contrast, Baltimore tackles Jared Gaither and Adam Terry have 15 career starts between them.

At first, Anderson will alternate with Terry at right tackle. But it seems hard to imagine the Ravens won’t increase Anderson’s playing time after his understanding of the playbook becomes complete.

“I’m fine with whatever opportunity they give me,” the 6-foot-5, 340-pounder said. “I wanted to come here and wanted to be a part of this team, and my role will be whatever they want it to be. I’m just excited about getting work.”

With Anderson on the right side, oncoming linebackers and defensive ends will have to work that much harder to make their way into the Baltimore backfield and get their hands on rookie quarterback Joe Flacco.

“I’m pretty sure Joe Flacco is sleeping a lot better knowing he’s got a Hall of Fame veteran right tackle on his team,” Suggs said. “I’m just so happy we got him. He does a lot for us in the passing game, but he can bring us back to that smashmouth identity we’re known for. I just can’t wait to see him out there.”

Knee pain means Ravens nose guard out for 2 weeks

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—Baltimore Ravens nose guard Kelly Gregg will remain sidelined for at least two more weeks with cartilage problems in his surgically repaired left knee, coach John Harbaugh said Friday.

Gregg underwent surgery in August, but wasn’t able to play during the preseason or the season opener.

“What it amounts to is he’s got kind of a hole in his cartilage that rubs bone to bone, and because of that he’s actually got a real sensitive spot on his bone,” Harbaugh said. “When he unloads on a block, that’s when he feels the pain. It’s almost like you’ve got a scab on your bone, and he tears the scab off.”

Gregg will miss Sunday’s game against Cleveland and next week’s trip to Pittsburgh. Then, Gregg will be week to week.

“We just have to take it as we go after that point,” Harbaugh said.

Justin Bannan will continue to start in Gregg’s place.

“We’re going to miss Kelly,” defensive tackle Haloti Ngata said.

Ravens use big 3rd quarter to keep Browns winless

BALTIMORE (AP)—In less than a minute, the Baltimore Ravens scored two touchdowns and further damaged an already agonizing season for the Cleveland Browns.

Baltimore turned two of Derek Anderson’s interceptions into a pair of touchdowns during a 50-second span of the third quarter, and the rested Ravens stayed unbeaten with a 28-10 victory Sunday.

Ed Reed returned one of the interceptions 32 yards for a score, and Le’Ron McClain scored his first two NFL touchdowns on a pair of 1-yard runs—both during a 21-point third quarter that turned a 3-point halftime deficit into a 28-10 lead.

Back from a knee injury, Willis McGahee rushed for 64 yards and a score for the Ravens (2-0), who were forced to take last week off when Hurricane Ike postponed their game at Houston.

Anderson had another trying day in an effort to generate some offense for Cleveland, which was picked by many to be a contender in the AFC North. Anderson went 14-for-37 for 125 yards, was sacked four times and threw three interceptions.

The Browns (0-3) have scored only two touchdowns in their three defeats. The last team to reach the playoffs after losing its first three games was the 1998 Buffalo Bills.

Baltimore went ahead 14-10 by cashing in a turnover on the Browns’ first possession of the third quarter. Kellen Winslow was hit by Ray Lewis while trying to catch a pass, and Chris McAlister plucked the ball from the air and took the interception to the Cleveland 12. Four plays later, McClain scored.

Reed then stepped in front of tight end Steve Heiden, caught Anderson’s pass and sprinted into the end zone for his fourth career interception return for a touchdown.

Later in the quarter, a 21-yard punt return by Jim Leonhard and a roughness penalty on Mike Adams gave Baltimore the ball at the Cleveland 35. The five-play drive ended with a touchdown run by McClain.

That all but assured the Ravens another win under first-year coach John Harbaugh. Last year, Baltimore lost twice to Cleveland.

Ravens safety Dawan Landry was taken from the field by a cart in the second quarter after being struck in the helmet with a knee by Jamal Lewis. Landry was trying to make a tackle on the play, and immediately slumped to the ground.

Landry never lost consciousness and had movement in all his extremities, according to Ravens orthopedist Leigh Ann Curl. A CT scan at a nearby hospital indicated he was OK.

Ravens rookie quarterback Joe Flacco completed his first seven passes, hitting five different receivers for 74 yards before throwing his first career interception. D’Qwell Jackson’s pickoff set up a 19-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Jerome Harrison, who took a toss in the right flat and weaved his way into the end zone.

The score, on the first play of the second period, ended Cleveland’s run of seven straight quarters without a touchdown.

Baltimore’s next possession ended in another interception, this one during a trick play. McGahee took a handoff and ran to his right before sending a lateral to Flacco, whose pass in the end zone was wrestled away from Derrick Mason by Adams.

But a 31-yard punt by Dave Zastudil gave Baltimore the ball at the Cleveland 43, which led to McGahee’s touchdown run.

Cleveland took a 10-7 lead with a 13-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a 38-yard field goal by Phil Dawson.

Ravens S Landry expected to play again

OWINGS MILLS, MARYLAND (TICKER) —Baltimore Ravens safety Dawan Landry on Monday was released from the hospital one day after he was involved in a frightening collision in Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Landry, who was taken off the field on a stretcher and diagnosed with a spinal cord concussion at the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma unit, was resting at home Monday and is expected to play again this season.

The injury occurred with 26 seconds left in the half, when Landry tackled Browns running back Jamal Lewis. Landry remained on the field motionless as Ravens’ trainers attended to him.

Dr. Leigh Ann Curl, the team’s chief orthopedic surgeon, said that Landry had feeling in his extremities and never lost consciousness.

“His stability tests are all normal,” Ravens first-year head coach John Harbaugh said.

Landry will wear a cervical collar for at least a week and then will be re-evaluated.

A fifth-round pick out of Georgia Tech in 2006, Landry, 25, made three tackles in the contest, giving him 11 on the season.

oh the ball will be ran, i have a feeling all three backs are gonna get some touches, and i think flacco looks really good, and only made two mistakes, on that one trick play he shouldnt have thrown it into that triple coverage, he just zero'd in and threw it anyways when he should've thrown it away

Baltimore defense looks for redemption in Pittsburgh

First place in the AFC North won't be the only thing on the line Monday night in Pittsburgh. When the Baltimore Ravens collide with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the bitter rivals will look to stake an early claim for best defense in the NFL.

The Ravens, the top-ranked defense in 2006, sit atop the league heading into Week 4. The Steelers, the No. 1 defense last season, are ranked right behind their divisional foe. Asked whether there is any question the Ravens have the best defense in the NFL right now, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata said, "I have no doubt."

The Ravens and the Steelers use aggressive 3-4 alignments. They have workmanlike linemen who hammer running backs. They have linebackers who crash off the edge to hit quarterbacks. And they have defensive backs who swarm to the ball.

This season, the Ravens' defense has scored as many touchdowns (one) as it has allowed. Pittsburgh can boast that it limited the Philadelphia Eagles to less than half of their scoring average in the Steelers' 15-6 loss Sunday.

"We're trying to re-establish ourselves as a solid defense," Ravens linebacker Bart Scott said. "A lot of people are saying that we're old and that we can't be a dominating defense or be feared. We're just going to line up every week and see where we measure at the end of the year."

To regain their reputation, the Ravens have to go to the place where they lost it last season. Routed 38-7 at Heinz Field, the Ravens tied a team record with five touchdowns allowed. They were embarrassed and beaten up. That game marked the first time in team history the Ravens had to play without both starting cornerbacks.

Steelers’ Parker, Hampton out for Ravens game

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The Pittsburgh Steelers’ running game struggled last season when Willie Parker was injured. They’re convinced that won’t happen now that they have Rashard Mendenhall.

The Steelers’ main injury worry following their 15-6 loss Sunday in Philadelphia was the punishment quarterback Ben Roethlisberger took while being sacked eight times. He played with a slight shoulder separation, and a right hand injury sidelined him late in the fourth quarter.

When Tomlin revealed his updated injury list Tuesday, Roethlisberger wasn’t on it, but Parker unexpectedly was—the Pro Bowl runner has a sprained left knee that will keep him out of Monday night’s home game against Baltimore (2-0).

Both the offense and defense will be missing key players. Four-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Casey Hampton (groin sprain) also won’t play and defensive end Brett Keisel (calf) will miss a second successive game. Chris Hoke, who made 10 starts in 2004, replaces Hampton.

Tomlin wouldn’t discuss the specifics of Parker’s injury or whether he might also miss the Oct. 5 game at Jacksonville, although that seems likely.

With Parker out, first-round draft pick Mendenhall will make his first NFL start. Mendenhall has 28 yards in 10 carries during limited playing time, partly because he fumbled three times in the final two exhibition games.

Is he ready after failing to get any carries in the past two games?

“Ready or not,” Tomlin said. “No, Rashard is ready. He’s a talented guy. He’s been practicing well and he gets his opportunity. You see a lot of his peers around the league and they’ve been getting opportunities, partly because they don’t have Willie Parker playing in front of them.”

Matt Forte of Chicago leads NFL rookie rushers with 304 yards and a 101.3 yard average, while Tennessee’s Chris Johnson (92.0), Oakland’s Darren McFadden (84.0) and Houston’s Steve Slaton (79.5) are averaging at least 75 yards per game.

“He gets his opportunity,” Tomlin said of Mendenhall. “I’m sure he’s excited about it. I know our team is excited to see what he’s capable of doing.”

Running the ball consistently against the Ravens has been a problem for the Steelers (2-1), even when Parker was healthy.

Parker has averaged 2.6 yards per carry and 43 yards per game in five career starts against the Ravens. With Parker injured, the Steelers managed 46 yards rushing in a regular season-ending 27-21 loss at Baltimore in December

This season, the Ravens have allowed a combined 153 yards rushing while beating Cincinnati and Cleveland.

Parker had 243 yards in his first two games before being held to 20 in Philadelphia, where the running game never got going and Roethlisberger was under persistent pressure. Despite those problems, Tomlin doesn’t plan any changes along the offensive line.

Tomlin said everyone shares the blame for the protection breakdowns, including the coaches. The Eagles had nine sacks and held the Steelers to 160 yards, with 33 yards rushing on 19 carries.

“As coaches, we could have done a better job of adjusting and putting those guys in a position to be successful,” Tomlin said. “We could have done a better job of identifying on all levels—wide receivers, running backs, offensive line and quarterback. We could have done a better job of physically blocking them.”

No doubt the Ravens saw how effective the Eagles’ pressure was, but Tomlin doesn’t expect an identical game plan Monday.

“We expect the Baltimore Ravens to be the Baltimore Ravens,” he said. “They don’t have to be the Philadelphia Eagles. They’re good enough in their own right.”

This is the second injury in as many seasons for Parker, who was leading the NFL in rushing with 1,316 yards when he broke his right leg early in a Dec. 20 game at St. Louis.

Without Parker, the Steelers were held to 92 yards rushing in their final two games, one reason why they used their first-round pick on Mendenhall.

McClain punishes defenses, with or without ball

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—Le’Ron McClain is built to punish opposing defenses, usually as a bruising fullback running in front of a slick-footed ball carrier.

That was how the Baltimore Ravens used the 6-foot, 260-pounder as a rookie last season. During training camp, however, an injury to Willis McGahee and the addition of fullback Lorenzo Neal enabled offensive coordinator Cam Cameron to try something different.

Cameron wanted to see what would happen if McClain got a full head of steam with the football cradled in his arm. McClain proved to be very difficult to bring down, and two games into the regular season the experiment is considered to be an unqualified success.

McClain leads the Ravens (2-0) with 152 yards rushing and last week scored his first two career touchdowns in a 28-10 rout of the Cleveland Browns. What makes those numbers even more impressive is that McClain totaled 170 yards on the ground during his entire career at Alabama, and last year rushed for 18 yards in eight carries with Baltimore.

“It starts with the guy. We can’t run the ball for him,” Cameron said Wednesday. “He’s put in a lot of hard work, done everything we’ve asked him to do. In training camp he got some opportunities because of Willis’ situation, and he made the most of them. He’s just scratching the surface.”

McClain still thinks of himself as a fullback, although it’s difficult for him to mask the pleasure he’s derived from carrying the ball, gaining yardage and scoring touchdowns.

“It’s fun to carry the ball, but I’ve always got the mind-set of not getting overwhelmed with the idea,” he said. “I was brought in as a fullback. If my role expands to be that runner, then I’ll be that runner. But now I just want to be humble and stay fullback first and tailback second.”

McClain is part of a trio of backs the Ravens employ to keep everyone fresh and the defense guessing. McGahee is more of a slasher, Ray Rice runs north and south, and McClain is like a pickup truck with legs. It’s been an outstanding combination in terms of ball control (the Ravens’ average time of possession is 37:02) and yardage (4.2 yards per carry).

“We feel fortunate that we have three guys that can do it, and we’re going to use all three guys,” coach John Harbaugh said.

“It’s just versatile,” center Jason Brown said. “No one can take away from what Willis does, but when you get that dynamic duo in the backfield with Le’Ron and Lorenzo Neal, two bruisers in the backfield, you can really wear down the defense. We can either pound on guys, slice them up the middle or wear them down with outside speed.”

As if his blocking and running wasn’t enough, McClain also has three catches 28 yards, two for first downs.

“I just think he’s a good all-around football player. He’s a solid runner, a solid blocker, a solid receiver,” Cameron said. “There’s really no shock to us what’s happening on Sundays because we’ve seen it in practice.”

McClain doesn’t care if he’s carrying the ball or blocking for McGahee. Just as long as he’s banging helmets with someone and helping the Ravens win.

“It’s fun, being used with Willis as Thunder and Lightning,” he said. “I love the physical part of the game. I love blocking, but if I get the ball that’s great, too. It really doesn’t matter.”

Ravens Team Report

Inside Slant

This will be an unusual homecoming of sorts for Joe Flacco.

The Ravens rookie quarterback will make his first NFL start on the road at the place where he fled from in college.

Flacco, who transferred from the University of Pittsburgh after receiving a shot to start, will return to Heinz Field for the first time since 2004.

“It’s kind of weird that my first start in Pittsburgh,” Flacco said. “But I’m not really looking at that. It’s an NFL game. It’s Monday night, and it should be a lot of fun to go out there and play a division opponent.”

Flacco has showed a lot of poise in starting 2-0 in his career, but he enjoyed playing in the coziness of M&T Bank Stadium.

This game will be different than anything he has ever experienced.

At the University of Delaware, Flacco never played in front of a visiting crowd of over 30,000 people. On Monday night, there will be double that—65,000 in black and gold—looking to take Flacco off his game.

“I’m sure it’s going to be very loud there, and we’re not going to be able to hear very much,” Flacco said. “NFL offenses deal with it every week, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

This isn’t new territory for the Ravens.

In 2003, Kyle Boller made his first start ever at Heinz Field. He completed 22 of 43 passes for 152 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked twice.

Unlike Boller, Flacco has adjusted to the NFL with a couple of home games. Flacco, the 18th overall pick in this year’s draft, has completed 58.3 percent of his passes, but he has thrown two interceptions and no touchdowns.

“We train our quarterbacks as though every practice is an on-the-road, in-division practice,” offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said. “Playing at home, you should be able to handle things at home pretty efficiently. You’re always trying to create the worst scenario you can.”

Beyond the statistics, Flacco has immediately impressed his teammates with his composure.

He rarely shows any emotion, whether he’s throwing an interception or running 38 yards for a touchdown.

That’s why the players are confident that Flacco will pass this road test.

“I’m not worried about how Joe will do,” receiver Derrick Mason said. “He’s our quarterback. He’s matured over the last two games as a quarterback. I think he’s looking forward to going down there to Pittsburgh and playing in that environment.

“He’s a guy that I think, from the last two games I saw him play and playing with him in the preseason, he’s a guy that thrives on things like that. So I’m looking for him to go down there and do what he has been doing, and that is to help us win football games.”

Series History: 26th meeting. Ravens trail series, 15-10. The Ravens are 2-6 at Heinz Field. Last season in Pittsburgh, the Ravens were blown out, 38-7, on Monday Night Football. It was the largest margin of defeat in the nine-year Brian Billick era. Steve McNair had the fewest yards passing in NFL history (63) by a quarterback that completed 13 passes. And the Ravens defense tied a team record with five touchdown passes allowed.

Notes, Quotes

• The last time the Ravens were at Heinz Field, linebacker Bart Scott threatened to “kill” Hines Ward after the Steelers wide receiver leveled Scott with a block.

Ward, who didn’t play in last season’s finale in Baltimore, isn’t worried about his first on-field meeting with Scott since the incident.

“I’m pretty sure if I see Bart out in the street, outside of football, he’s not going to kill me,” Ward said.

• Strong safety Dawan Landry was released from Maryland Shock Trauma Center a day after the Ravens’ 28-10 win over the Cleveland Browns and is expected to return to the field this season after suffering a spinal cord concussion.

“His stability tests are all normal,” coach John Harbaugh said. “He will be in a cervical collar for at least a week, and then they’ll evaluate him further and then we’ll just take it from there. He’ll be playing in some number of weeks, and it won’t be too many weeks.”

• Reserve quarterback Troy Smith practiced for the first time since coming down with tonsillitis on Aug. 22.

The former Heisman Trophy winner was able to take turns running the scout team after he had regained 10 of the 20 pounds he lost because of the illness.

It’s unknown when Smith will suit up for a game.

“I’m just playing it by ear,” Smith said. “My body will let me know when I’m ready.”

• Trevor Pryce’s sack of the Browns’ Derek Anderson in the second quarter gave the defensive end 80 career sacks, which is fifth best among active players.

• Spurred by linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, 20 players registered to vote through Rock the Vote.

• The NFL took away a team sack from the Ravens—the one where Browns quarterback Derek Anderson tripped and running back Jamal Lewis fell on top of him. The Ravens now have six sacks on the season.

• This marks the Ravens’ only appearance on Monday Night Football this season.

• The Ravens have won four of their past five games against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

• The Ravens are 4-6 on Monday Night Football, going 0-3 last season. Their losses came against the Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots.

• The Ravens are looking for their second 3-0 start in franchise history. The last time they did so was 2006.

By The Numbers: 3—Rookie quarterbacks since 1970 that have started a season 2-0. The list includes the Ravens’ Joe Flacco, the Broncos’ John Elway and the Chargers’ Ryan Leaf.

Quote To Note: “The Ravens aren’t rebuilding. We know that usually happens when you change the head coach. I’d say ‘remodeling’ would be a better description.”—Ravens coach John Harbaugh, on the perception of the AFC North-leading Ravens.

Strategy And Personnel

The biggest concern is at cornerback. Samari Rolle re-injured his shoulder, which could limit him to nickel situations. If that’s the case, Fabian Washington would start in place of Rolle. Washington has yet to play this season because of a bulging disc in his neck.

Even if Rolle starts, Washington should replace Corey Ivy as the nickel back. Although he isn’t as physical as Ivy, Washington is faster and a much better cover corner.

Demetrius Williams returned last game as the team’s No. 3 receiver. He is still being slowed by a hamstring injury. Once he fully recovers, the Ravens will look to hit him deep.

PLAYER NOTES

• RB Willis McGahee still has a swollen eye from Sunday’s game against Cleveland, which could affect his availability Monday. “As long as he can see, he’ll play,” coach John Harbaugh said. “But if he can’t, he’s not going to be able to play.”

• TE Todd Heap has averaged four catches for 41.6 yards in 12 meetings against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has only scored two touchdowns in his career against them.

• WR Mark Clayton has averaged 3.6 catches for 44 yards in five meetings with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His lone touchdown came in 2006.

• S Ed Reed has three career interceptions against Pittsburgh, including one in his past two games against the Steelers.

• LB Terrell Suggs has recorded six sacks in 10 career games against the Steelers. He has posted at least a half sack in three straight games at Pittsburgh.

Game Plan: The Ravens will follow the same blueprint of the Philadelphia Eagles, who had nine sacks against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Look for the Ravens to use the same disguised blitzes to get a free runner on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The Ravens aren’t concerned with the Steelers running game. They always held Willie Parker in check and should shut down his replacement, Rashard Mendenhall.

Offensively, the Ravens have shown a tendency to use the pass to set up the run. There could be some chances early to attack cornerbacks Ike Taylor and Bryant McFadden. Expect more short passes and quicker drops to counter Pittsburgh’s blitzes.

Matchups To Watch: Ravens run defense vs. Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall. The Ravens haven’t allowed a Steelers running back to gain over 42 yards in the past four meetings. The trend should continue against Mendenhall, who is replacing injured starter Willie Parker. The foundation of the Ravens defense is stopping the run. Baltimore hasn’t given up 100 yards to a running back in 21 straight games, the longest current streak in the NFL. Its run defense has dominated the first two games. The Ravens have held teams to two yards or less on 41 percent of their rush attempts.

Ravens WR Derrick Mason vs. Steelers cornerbacks. Mason has been nonexistent the past few seasons against the Steelers. Since having 91 yards receiving at Pittsburgh in 2005, he has combined for eight catches for 45 yards in his past two trips to Heinz Field. But expect Mason to have more of an impact this time. Rookie quarterback Joe Flacco often targets Mason, the team’s leader in receptions. Receivers have had success against the Steelers this season. Houston’s Andre Johnson (10 catches for 112 yards) and Philadelphia’s Hank Baskett (eight for 85) have made a dent in the Pittsburgh secondary.

Injury Impact: SS Dawan Landry (neck) is out at least a couple of weeks after sustaining a spinal cord concussion. He will be replaced by Jim Leonhard, who will make his first start for the Ravens.

• DT Kelly Gregg (knee) is out at least for one more game with a cartilage issue in his knee. He will be replaced by Justin Bannan.

• LB Nick Greisen (thigh) was limited in practice. He will play and be the team’s top backup at inside linebacker.

• RB Le’Ron McClain (back and ankle) was limited in practice. He will play and should receive around 15 carries once again.

• RB Willis McGahee (eye) still has a swollen eye and wore sunglasses while walking through the locker room. If the swelling doesn’t go down, he could be inactive.

• CB Samari Rolle (shoulder and neck) could be limited to nickel back situations with the injury. Fabian Washington would start in his place.

• QB Troy Smith (illness) took turns running the scout team but won’t dress Sunday. He has regained 10 of 20 pounds that he lost because of the tonsil infection.

• WR Yamon Figurs (hamstring) had a full practice. He will return punts and kickoffs.

• LB Tavares Gooden (hip) had a full practice. He might play on special teams.

• CB Fabian Washington (neck) had a full practice. He could start if Samari Rolle is limited with a shoulder injury. Washington has yet to play this season because of a bulging disc in his neck.

Right from start, Flacco shows he’s a player

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i50/playerfn1/myspq/4626a62efa32aa0101eb16d67c5ccce2-ge.jpg

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—It’s time for Joe Flacco to say “I told you so.”

That would be out of character for the soft-spoken rookie, but there’s no question the Baltimore Ravens’ top draft pick was on target when he insisted that the best way for him to start his career as an NFL quarterback was on the field.

“How are you going to learn when you’re sitting?” Flacco said at the end of the preseason when someone suggested it might be wise for him to watch as an understudy on the sideline.

Three games into his first pro season, Flacco already has the look of a veteran. After guiding the Ravens to two wins in his first two starts, he threw a touchdown pass and deftly directed a 76-yard scoring drive to force overtime last Monday in a 23-20 defeat at Pittsburgh.

Flacco got the starting job because Kyle Boller and Troy Smith weren’t healthy enough to play, but he has performed well enough to prove the point he emphatically made in the preseason.

So Joe, how about telling the Ravens you were right all along?

“There’s no ‘I told you so,”’ Flacco said Wednesday. “I’m just happy to be playing and helping the team out. I think that’s all that matters.”

He did, however, make it emphatically clear that his education has been helped along by being the first-string quarterback.

“Anytime you’re able to get three NFL games under your belt and all the practice time, I can’t even guesstimate how much better I’ve become because of it. It’s huge for the learning curve to experience it yourself,” he said. “You can get better sitting and watching, but I don’t think you’ll get better as quickly, and that’s what I’ve been about since day one.”

When they drafted Flacco with the 18th overall pick, the Ravens designated him as their quarterback of the future. A shoulder injury to Boller and Smith’s infected tonsils pushed the future into now, and the former Delaware star has proven to be as comfortable passing against NFL foes as he was in dominating the Colonial Athletic Association.

“The No. 1 thing for me is that he’s maintained who he is. He’s the guy that we thought he was,” Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said. “Sometimes you evaluate a guy before the draft and they’re not what you thought. The most pleasing thing about Joe is that this is who he was in college. He hasn’t changed how he acts. If he continues to be true to himself, he’s not going to do anything but get better and better.”

Now that would be something, because Flacco is already pretty darn good. He has thrown two interceptions and lost a fumble, but that is offset by his 55.7 completion percentage, his poise in the pocket and that Baltimore is scoring 22 points per game.

“Joe is a very smart quarterback. He understands the game a lot better than a lot of young quarterbacks would,” Ravens receiver Derrick Mason said.

Flacco had not faced adversity until Monday night, his first road game in the NFL. He excelled in the first half, throwing a touchdown pass to Daniel Wilcox for a 13-3 lead. But he lost a fumble during a third-quarter sack, and Pittsburgh scored on the play to go up 17-13.

After the Steelers made it 20-13, Flacco went 3-for-3 for 60 yards in a fourth-quarter drive that took the game into overtime.

“I didn’t learn anything new about Joe that I didn’t already know. The guy is a competitor. Mentally he’s tough,” Mason said. “He’s maturing the more he’s out there on the field. It was evident this last game. When we needed a score to put it into overtime, Joe did it. He was cool out there, and that’s what you’ve got to have from your quarterback.”

Flacco next will be tested Sunday by the unbeaten Tennessee Titans, who own the league’s fifth-ranked defense. But Titans coach Jeff Fisher wondered aloud if his team will be the one being challenged.

“He’s very poised,” Fisher said of Flacco. “He has those instincts in the pocket that you can’t teach, where you can move around and feel the rush and still keeps your eyes downfield. That says a lot. He’s going to be a very good quarterback.”

Time for Flacco to say "I told you so" after 4 games?

“How are you going to learn when you’re sitting?” Flacco said at the end of the preseason when someone suggested it might be wise for him to watch as an understudy on the sideline.

ask carson palmer

flacco made one mistake, against that tough defense in that tough enviroment, the one mistake was holding onto the ball too long. now what?

pretty damn good for a rookie, he's showed the poise from week one, you watched the game, probably the last time you thought the bengals would be good this season
