View Full Version : What would you have done with Joba Chamberlain?

Alright, I keep seeing blame on a number of things that were done wrong with the handling of him.

Is it possible that nothing was done wrong, or is it possible that EVERYTHING wrong possible has been done concerning the utilization of this guy?

Never should have been brought out of the pen? Brought out too fast? Can't predict injury, nothing was done wrong?

You tell me.

I agree! Mo will be gone soon! Joba is a decent starter but would be? a lights out? closer?

Agree 100%...it's real hard to find a lights out closer like Mo and Joba has the potential to be that if he's kept in pen. They can aways go out and get starters through trades or free angency.

Alot easier to find a closer than a top notch starter. Joba was a starter most of his career and that is the best spot for him in my opinion.

If that were true, then you wouldn't see all these shit bullpens and blown saves all over baseball. Other than Mo and maybe Lidge, there aren't really any top notch closers. You can argue that Mo was the Yankess MVP throughout their title years. I'd rather have Joba be the closer for the next 10 years.

Might not find a top 5 closer, but you can find guys like Nathan, Papelbon, etc. who were converted starters to closers. Won't need a closer anyway if you have guys like Ponson, Pavano, Kennedy, Hughes, etc. in your rotation. Only about 15 top notch starters and Joba has the potential to be one of those guys. Rather a guy pitch 7 innings than 1. Shit bullpens has more to do with bad set up man not the closers.

i would have liked to see him stay in the pen. remember when the starters only needed to go 6 innings? then the ball went to rivera and wetteland. i was hoping to see a similar situation with joba going to rivera, albeit hoping the yanks would have a lead at that point in the game. i wanted to see the yanks laying the grounds for the torch be passed on. the yankees panicked this season. they needed a quick answer to what was going on, and i think they handled it wrong. my two cents

I gotta admit that I was a huge proponent of transitioning him back into a starter. Mo for a few more years or so, and then they got those guys Phil Coke (L) and Mark Melancon (R) coming up. Melancon is similar to Chamberlain, except he runs a fast two seamer and a hard curve/slider for an out pitch and is developing a change.

I would have preferred Joba to become a starter in the mold of a power pitcher that Beckett, old Kerry Wood, Clemens, Schill, or a fat Sid were... but like Wood, he might be too fragile no matter how much time you give him to make the transition.

It's a shame b/c you got a guy who you could count on for a win every 5th day if only you knew he'd be out there for a full season. :/

He has a great attitude about it no matter what they decide and he just wants to do what he can to help the team win. I believe that's what Papelbon told Terry not so long ago.

i've always said fat sid could have been one of the best pitchers of his era....go look at his hits allowed compared to innings pitched...amazing....if only he hadn't walked so many guys

I looked at three things, innnings, hits, and WHIP... and the WHIP was STILL better than average to excellent in his prime years... tells ya he didn't let up a lot of hits at all. Years he threw 200+ he was only giving up 160 hits on several occasions.

Its hard to get a Roy Halliday or any lights out starter who can give you 7 innings of dominance...I would rather have him pitch as a starter...He has the gifts..

If they were going to do it, put him in the rotation, they should've begun that transistion in the off season. It'd be smarter to keep him in the pen, though. I hope they start him.

He's got a smooth wind up and follow thru...I don't see max effort...he can throw the ball 85 without trying and that's more than enough to be an Ace in the Yankees rotation.

Guy is a retard most of the time, but he does have a valid point. Comparing Joba to Halladay is crazy, but Joba has the chance to be a #1 starter in the majors which is alot harder to find than a closer. I hate the Yankees just as much as anybody, but you can't deny Joba has great stuff.

I hate the Yankees just as much as anybody, but you can't deny Joba has great stuff. Many many guys in the big leagues and minors have great stuff. Far from all of them become a #1 starter.

I can find way more guys who had great stuff and never developed to what they should have. They ended up getting injured, or one of a million other things stopped that from happening. You need to have the make up. Some guys just are missing something. You know what the fuck I am talking about. Having great stuff does not mean you should be a #1 starter....That is all

Joba has that makeup and he was dominate as a starter after his first couple of starts. I would say he has injury problems because the Yankees keep flip flopping him back and forth.

Answer me this question and this is based on potential. Who would you rather have Roy Oswalt or Joe Nathan?

They Yanks only "flip-flopped" him once. They brought him out of th pen to start and he felt tightness in his shoulder. Upon his return, he came out of the pen.

It's not an ongoing problem. They said all along he was going to start and he finally did. He got hurt, and they made him a set up guy again.

I wanted the guy to be a starter, like you, b/c a starter w/ his stuff is rare. You can take any fireballer, teach them a biting slider and you have a serviceable closer.

I agree with this... they need to make up their mind in spring training and stick to it... none of this start in the pen and move to starter by getting shelled 4 straight games to get your pitch count up.... fuck that.

Make a decision in the off-season and do it. stop the nonsense.

They just need to either make him a closer or starter can't keep moving back and forth. I can see putting him in the bullpen last year for the playoffs, but they should have had him start the beginning of this season. Starters are twice as valuable as closers just look at the money each get. Most guys are closers because they failed as starters.
