View Full Version : Live Topic

I've turned the media embedding back on

and I've testing a new supporter feature called live topic. when thread is marked as live, when youa re in it new posts will just appear. without you needing to hit refresh. this will only go on in the busy threads. a listening thread should usually be live while that show is live.

as you can imagine, something like this could pound the servers. that's why I can't make it available to everyone. I'll need feed back from you all.

if the server is running shitty, I'll try turning off the media embed again and see how it runs with just this live feature. I'll test it the reverse way as well

this can be disabled in your profile on the options page, thread viewing options

Mutt

will be cool to see it actually works. I need people in this thread posting.

the new posts get added tot he bottom of the list where you'd expect them. the page will eventually get filled up and you'd have to click to the next page. I think it's set at 30 live posts as a cap. it'll need some tweaking for sure.

I just saw a weird live topic refresh on a different page.

bu one just popped up here while I was quick replying. that worked perfectly

JuiceBeetle

Just a quick observation Mutt. Some of the topics/new topics will show up as 5-20 replies yet it says no views. Just a wierd quirk, not really a problem.

just an observation

Mutt

views are not updated immediately. they are done in batches.

if we had them update immediately, it would be harder on the server

Mutt

I still have to refresh?

it's a supporter feature. so no live thread for you.

but you shouldn't refresh. you should click on the number at the top of the last post. that reloads the page without refreshing all the images. it'll work much quicker for you

it wasn't working right but I just fixed it. now it works how it should. click that link an it reloads the page, brings you right back to that spot & the posts are updated. this is better than hitting refresh because when you do that, all the images & javascript need to be re-downloaded. doing it by click will be much quicker for you

if will strain the system, why bother? it's not like people are incapable of clicking the refresh button

I never understood the attraction of embedding either... it takes the same single click to start an embedded video as it does to start a linked video... and the presence of embedded videos slows down the thread loading

Mutt
04-02-2009, 05:40 AM
I'm testing a new supporter feature called live topic. when thread is marked as live, new posts will just appear without you needing to hit refresh. it's much like in a chatroom or instant messenger. this will only go on in the busy threads. a listening thread should usually be live while that show is live.

as you can imagine, something like this could pound the servers. that's why I can't make it available to everyone.

this can be disabled in your profile on the options page, thread viewing options

the message you got that means live topic is on in that thread and you are at the max allowable per page posts. as the new posts automatically appear a the bottom of the page, you'll eventually get to the max allowed posts on a page. if left unchecked, a listening thread could get 100's of posts long on 1 page which wouldn't be good. once the page maxes out, as new posts get added to the bottom, old one get stripped off the top. they aren't being deleted or anything. it's like the page is set on auto refresh and auto scroll.

so if i have mine set at 100 per page it wont work? because that feature doesnt work for me

no it's nothing like that. it still adds new posts to the thread. it just controls the length of the page by stripping away posts at the top as it adds posts to the bottom

if you aren't seeing it it's because you either
- you aren't a supporter
- have live topic disabled in user control panel.
- you have some weird browser that doens't do ajax
- you have an adblocker installed that's blocking he google ajax scripts

for you personally, lets figure it out. it's not 1 or 2.

what browsers, version, & OS do you have?
do you have ad blocker or script blocker installed?

different browsers & browser settings will get different options. like the little dropdown boxes in the header menu. not everyone will see those. some people will just have a link w/ no little arrow next to it. quick reply / quote might be like that.

please tell me some details
- what browser, version & OS are you on
- what exactly are you clicking on to quote in quick reply?

when I click the quote button in firefox 3 it goes right to the full editor.
when I add multiple people to quote, same deal
