View Full Version : Report: Mets close to inking Gary Sheffield

According to New York Newsday, the Mets have contacted Gary Sheffield directly and he could sign with the club as soon as Friday night.

The Mets are reportedly his first choice, behind the Reds and Phillies. Sheffield, who's sitting on 499 career home runs, would give freshly opened Citi Field its first major milestone. He would probably platoon with Ryan Church in right field and could sneak additional at-bats if young left fielder Daniel Murphy struggles out of the gate. Sheffield, 40, was hitting .178/.387/.378 this spring before he was let go by the Tigers, and should only cost the Mets a one-year contract at the league minimum, $400,000. Detroit is stuck with the rest of his $14 million tab.

Look who is thinking of me again :hw:

Manny would have cost about $24,600,000 more. Sheffield is a $400,000 risk

One will hit .330 with 40 HR's and 120 Rbi's and putting you into the World Series. The other one will hit .217 with 3 hr's and 18 rbi's before being put on waivers in June.

Mets are fucked!!!

Let's be honest the Mets have unproven talent on the corner OF and this is a good signing for them. Church always gets hurt, Murphy is unproven, and Tatis could be a fluke.

Marlon Anderson apparently will be released after all. Sheffield figures to be used in right field against left-handers, with Fernando Tatis starting in left field against some lefties.

Anderson sucks and Sheffield is alot better than him.

Sheffield knows this is his last shot and if he fucks up again all the Mets have to do is cut his ass. $400,000 is worth the risk. I wouldn't worry about his attitude it is his hitting. Tigers didn't cut him because of his attitude they cut him because he didn't hit anything the past 2 years.

The mets signing Sheff for the leafue minimum is a brilliant move. There is really no extreme cost to them. If he hits his ass of they look like geniuses and if he sucks they release him and Detroit is still paying the larger part of the tab. This is coming from a lifelong yankees fan by the way. :)

He knows he is trying to get himself into the hall of fame right now. I do not think right now he is a hall of famer and he wants to get to the magic number of 500 and beyond. Bottom line is when he shuts up and plays the guy can play. So hopefully no attitude and minaya looks like a genius again. He is not the biggest problem for the mets anyways Beltran in that outfield needs to get back into that form when he got the deal again.

Earlier today, Omar Minaya addressed the media and announced he and his team reached an agreement with free-agent OF Gary Sheffield.

Minaya said Sheffield still must take a physical, and is expected to be with the team tomorrow.

Later, Carlos Beltran told reporters, “I think it helps, because he knows what to expect, he’s going to come here and do his thing and he knows how things work here in New York.”

Speaking with WFAN’s Mike Francesa, Minaya said Gary Sheffield has not been guaranteed any playing time, and he will need to ‘work his way in to being more than a part-time player.’

Minaya repeatedly used the word ‘work,’ when referencing Sheffield’s role, saying the player needs to work to return to being as productive as he once was, saying he’ll need to work to get in the lineup, and adding Jerry Manuel will need to work him in to a role.

“Jerry was very clear, to Gary, what role he is coming in to do,” Minaya explained, while speaking to reporters.

Manuel added, “I think the first thing we’ll do, as a staff, is make sure and get him in shape to play an outfield position, so for the first few days I think we’ll spend a lot of time on extra work, preparing him to, like I said, work him back to playing an outfield position.”

Minaya labeled the signing ‘low risk, high reward,’ when speaking with Francesa, because he is only obligated to pay him $400,000.

Minaya also explained to WFAN that he checked with players and coaches on his team who have played with Sheffield, who said, ‘across the board,’ ‘this guy is a very good teammate.

Jerry Manuel talked with Jimmy Leyland, who managed Sheffield in Florida, where Manuel was a coach, and Leyland was positive in his review in an in step with what Minaya encountered when speaking with other ‘front-office guys,’ he explained on air.

I know for a fact the mets didn't make a call. Omar laughed and walked away when one of the writers mentioned Sheffield.

For $400,000 it's a low risk signing. If he doesn't hit who cares? Cut him and bring up one of your kids from AAA. It's the freaking Tigers who are on the hook for the 13.6 million after all.

While I'm not a fan of Sheffield at all, it's a low risk signing. Only place he can go is up. He'll be a bench player and can step in if someone gets hurt. Much rather have Sheffield on the bench than Marlon Anderson. I think the locker room cancer thing is overrated. He knows his role.

In baseball terms, $400,000 is a cheap investment. I just dont understand him going to an NL team. Hes a DH at best. Was Marlon Anderson that bad for the Mets? When he was with the Dodgers, I kinda liked him.

awful. awful. awful.

Did Ryan Church fuck Omar's wife?.. they hate the guy and almost killed him last year. And he's a good player who now gets to sit the bench.

EDIT: I'm looking over the thread and people are saying Shef will be a bench player... that will ruin your team. I'm no Mets basher, but this move is terrible. How could they go after Sheffield this hard yet not even take a look at Manny, regardless of the money issue. Manny was just what they needed, Shef is just what they DON'T need.

Not really. I wouldn't say they 'went hard' after Sheffield. He was available, they made him a low risk offer to be a bench player and he took it. Manny, while a much better hitter, was a whole different can of worms. Would have been a ton of money and they would have to make room for him to start. If Manny didn't work out, they couldn't just cut him. They would be in way too deep. If Sheffield doesn't work out they can give him the boot and it will cost them very little. It's not really the same situation at all.

Nick Evans was 72 hours away from making it onto the Opening Day roster -- and then the Mets signed Gary Sheffield on Friday. Evans had been a virtual lock for Cincinnati as a spaceholder for Livan Hernandez, who isn't needed until Saturday in Miami, but Sheffield ultimately bounced him from those five precious days of major-league service time.

Evans batted .263 (21-for-80) and was second only to Omir Santos with three home runs in 32 spring-training games. He also was fourth on the Mets with 12 RBI.

In other moves, the Mets placed Billy Wagner, Angel Pagan and Tim Redding on the 15-day disabled list.
