Your argument compares teenage sex with adult, consensual sex.

We advise (unwed) teenagers against unprotected, (heterosexual) sex because of the possibility of pregnancy (and, of course STDs--something most everyone in the heterosexual community forgets about or thinks they're immune to).

We advise adult, gay men against unprotected, (homosexual) sex because of the possibility (strictly) of contracting STDs.

I'd almost argue that abstinence has no place in the gay community because our sex would never result in pregnancy, but I'd stop short of that, since there are gay teenagers who could benefit from waiting until they're older before they have sex.

There is absolutely no reason gay men should practice abstinence, so long as when they do have sex, it's safe sex.


Getting back to your post:
Your argument also implies that someone (Howard?) is encouraging a "lifestyle" which, by your selection of words, implies a choice.

And it implies something else: that to acknowledge or respect someone for being gay promotes the increases in HIV contraction.

Wrong on both counts.

My orientation is my identity. It's not a choice. I have sex. I have sex with men. No one has promoted me to do this. It is in my nature to do this. Acknowledging my identity doesn't necessarily mean that I engage in unprotected sex and contribute to the rise in HIV rates.

Now, even if Palin's motivation is a cautionary tale, one which she wishes to share with other teens, the way she's going about is sending mixed signals to teens.
