Could Diamondbacks left-hander Randy Johnson and Dodgers right fielder Shawn Green become the central figures in a three- or four-team blockbuster that would result in Johnson joining the Yankees?

The pieces certainly fit.
Johnson will earn $16 million next season. Green also will earn $16 million. In baseball's current economic climate, such financial matches are necessary for exchanges of high-salaried players. And there are indications that a three-way deal between the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Dodgers is in the works.

The Yankees and Diamondbacks have spoken twice in the last three days, according to published reports. The Diamondbacks are working to complete a trade for a power-hitting outfielder, according to the East Valley Tribune. And the Dodgers pursuit of A's right-hander Tim Hudson seems to have lost momentum since the winter meetings.

In a three-way deal, Johnson could go to the Yankees, Green to the Diamondbacks and Yankees right-hander Javier Vazquez to the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks almost certainly would want an established pitcher and young players in addition to Green. The Dodgers likely would require cash from the Yankees to cover at least part of Vazquez's remaining $34.5 million in salary over the next three seasons.

In earlier talks, the Diamondbacks gave the Yankees a list of 10 pitchers that they coveted from other clubs. The most attainable of those pitchers was Rockies right-hander Shawn Chacon, whom the Yankees could acquire for prospects and include in the deal.

Johnson, 41, and Green, 32, both possess no-trade clauses, but Johnson wants to play for the Yankees and Green would be reunited in Arizona with his former agent, chief executive officer-elect Jeff Moorad. Green's .629 career slugging percentage at Arizona's Bank One Ballpark is his highest at any NL park in which he has 50 or more at-bats.

Actually, that would be a great deal for the D-Backs. Although, if the Yanks are gonna give up that much for Johnson, how come they couldn't swing something for Hudson? I'm just pissed that the Braves got Hudson for nothing, while the Yanks are giving up a lot.

Was it not coming sooner or later that he would be wearing pinstripes? They all end up there.

All the Yankees gave up is a career .500 pitcher, a 3rd baseman who couldn't beat out Drew Henson and a catcher who may never be a starter in the major leagues. Not what I would call "too much".

Duncan was a #1 pick in 2003, and the reason Henson was released BEFORE the Yanks got A-ROD this year. Navarro is a prospect... how good, who knows? Does everyone forget how good Vasquez was before the All-Star break last year? Yes he fell apart in the second half, but he's only 28!

Obviously he's not Randy Johnson, but the unit is 41... how much longer can he keep going? If the deal goes through, the Yanks get their guy.... but they won't get him cheap...

the Braves on the other hand got Hudson for a bag of peanuts!

The Randy Johnson trade is apparently expanding from three to four teams.

The trade has Shawn Green, Brad Penny, Yhency Brazoban and prospect Brandon Weeden going from L.A. to Arizona; Javier Vazquez and two Yankee prospects (Dioner Navarro and Eric Duncan) going from the Bronx to the Dodgers; and the Big Unit along with L.A. lefthander Kaz Ishii coming to New York.

The initial framework of the deal did not have the Yankees getting Ishii, but the Dodgers appear determined to shed significant salary in the exchange.

Along those lines, the Dodgers are now expected to spin off Vazquez to a fourth team, believed to be the White Sox, for a combination of players believed to include first baseman Paul Konerko, lefty reliever Damaso Marte and righty starter Jon Garland.

If you're a Yankee fan, like me, then you would realize that the Yankees have little interest in developing young talent. Like all teams with a "win-now" mentality, the Yankees farm system is baron, and any decent prospect is traded away for proven commodities. Vasquez was excellent for the first half of 2004, going 10-5, but as the pressure grew, he couldn't handle it. Randy Johnson is old, but that mofo can still throw 95-97 mph. He's still an amazing pitcher, and he's the ace that we need.

The diamondbacks are looking for a one year turnaround by picking up players like finley, penny as well as ortiz and glaus. They yankees are the ultimate winner in this trade. Randy Johnson is a winner and a workhorse. The yankees staff may be aged but they are very experienced.

The dodgers are the biggest loser in the deal, they wind up with vazquez who couldnt even take the new york pressure. Here comes LA!

LA has recently bowed out. The White Sox may take Vasquez and the deal may go thru.

I hate the Yankees (but, not *real* Yankee fans); what is the point of such a high payroll? To rub other teams' nose in it? To show that baseball is a farce, when one team can spend itself into contention every year, without using their brains?

And, if the Yankees try to void Giambi's contract, I want to see them give up their pennant won with him. And have them stricken from the record books. Can't have it both ways.

Red Sox should give up their World Series because Garciaparaa was with them half the year last year and he has every symptom of a steroid user

Give up the 03 AL Pennant AND get rid of Giambi? I'd make that deal in a second!!!

Who gives a fuck about al Pennants, the Yanks have plenty... it's WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIPS that count.

GOOD!

Another reason the deal didn't go through is because here in Los Angeles, people were PISSEDOFF at Dodgers Management.

All you hear about in the papers and on the radio is that they are salary dumping....which looks true. The McCourts screwed up, they don't have the cash to back a 3.3 Million person per year cow like the Dodgers.

This Depodesta Moneyball bulllshit ain't working.
