Howard Opens Up About Split
by Marcus Errico
Oct 25, 1999, 11:25 AM PT
A surprisingly contrite, subdued Howard Stern spent nearly all Monday morning on his syndicated radio show gamely fielding caller questions about his just-announced split with wife Alison.
"I want to get this out in the open," Stern said. "I do not satisfy her needs. She doesn't satisfy some of my needs...We love each other too much to go on like that."
"This is the most painful thing I've ever gone through," he revealed.
As per newspaper reports this weekend, the 45-year-old "King of All Media" blamed the deterioration of the 21-year union on his workaholic ways, which include his radio show (beamed nationally to a rabid audience of 10 million-plus), two TV shows and a production slate that includes additional series and movies. The separation does not have to do with his stripper-ogling, sex-starved on-air personality.
"I wasn't giving enough," Howard admitted. "I have a very demanding professional life. And when I'm not working, I just want to sit at home and do nothing. I'm a reclusive person...She has a life, tHoward Opens Up About Split

After spending his broadcast career bragging about his wonderful married life, the announcement of the split late Friday was shocking news to the shock jock's faithful. Still, Howard admitted Monday that the trouble between him and Alison dates back as much as 10 years; he added that they attended marriage counseling before agreeing to separate.
"I never thought we would need time apart. I thought we could work through things," he said. "But it's best to have some time apart."
Howard said he knows the split has opened him up to attacks from marriage-challenged celebrities he's targeted in the past (e.g., the oft-divorced Larry King), but he insisted that he and Alison have no plans to divorce, and that the separation is mutual and amicable. "I spent the weekend at my house, with Alison and the kids [they have three daughters]," he said. "She's my best friend. I still love her."
Howard swapped vows with the former Alison Berns in 1978 after four years of courting, back when he was a nobody and she a social worker.
"I thought we would grow old together," Howard began in one of Monday's rare moments of (forced?) levity. "I just lived too long."
