I think that the moderators at the O&A board are doing a good job. My opinion was fortified yesterday, when I saw how much bogus posts detracted from this board. There is a difference between discussion and bullshit. I go to both boards for content. If there were no moderators on the O&A board, it would be an utter mess, as is evidenced by the state of this board today.

At least it will make it a little more difficult to spam this board. I understand that AOL may your IP address every time you log in. This means that you may have to dial out, and back in for every response. This puts a kink into the works, doesn't it?

In addition to that, if you dial into the same number, you are probably going to be on the same exact subnet, so the IP address is going to be very close, if not the same, to the one you used the previous time.

as for IP's, here is some info for ya

The site saves your ip everythime you post. see the little ip icon top right of every post? I just keep the ip's hidden because some people are wierd about giving out their ip. it's a privacy thing. I'll consider opening that up to all members, but for now it is closed to staff.

yes, the ip changes when you dial in, but it doens't change all that much. the first 3 quarters of it are the same. even my cable modem ip changes sometimes

the site does a lookup on the ip that tells me what computer you are dialing into which tells me where in the country you are from. the computer you are dialing into doesn't really change to much.

here are a couple ip lookup examples

spider-mtc-tf051.proxy.aol.com
this just tells me it's an AOL account but the mtc-tf051 identifies computer thats being dialed into.

here's a different aol account
spider-tf034.proxy.aol.com
see tf034 is a differnet dial up than mtc-tf051. no I don't know where in the country tf034 is, but I can see if 2 members are in the same town.

cn328462-a.bens1.pa.home.com
which might not look like much but this really tells you alot. home.com tells you the person is on an @home cable modem. pa is the state. bens is short for the town that the @home office is

the ip doens't change while you are connected, so if you post once as one member and then again as another, I can see you are one in the same. if you post, disconnect, reconnect, and then post the second, I won't know for sure, but sooner or later, you'll screw up. also, sooner or later, you'll get the same ip again. each dialup only has so many. trackin who doc was became fun, but eventually I stopped trying. it was just too much to check all his personalities.

I had to made an addon to the control panel just for this. It started for fun but I wound up needing it to be able and see if you cheated in the deathpool, by registering more than once and entering multiple times. I enter your username and it checks your profile and all your posts for you ip / ips. it then checks the other members and flags matches. I can then use any matches to do anohter search to try and dig up more matches. It works ok, but it's slow. I'll fix it up before the end of the game. (there will be lots of new death pool code written this week. I have off from work and will be spending my free time improving the site)

Please do. as a fan of both shows...i was appalled by this whole spamming sites crap. Maybe you feel O&A are clones, I don't. Howard will rant and fulminate for a couple of minutes, every so often, but then he gets on with the show. Believe it or not, sometimes he makes some pretty salient points,( and sometimes he's a raging idiot and a hypocrite, longtime fans know this, but he's in therapy twice a week, so at least he's trying) for instance, the WoW promotion, you might think it's great, but it does "put off" potential listeners. A radio show in a market like New York, shouldn't have to rely on a promotion like that.
I tuned in for a couple of minutes on the day before O&A went on vacation and I was pretty dissapointed, there were several stupid references to a certain radio Dj and his new contract. Stern has been in the business for what? 25 years, and yet someone like "Opie"( who would be still spinning records at Wbab and doing K-mart openings in Ronkonkoma, if Anthony Cumia hadn't walked thru the door) thinks he's being clever and funny by making half-assed remarks. Like I said, like him or not he's paid his dues and put in the time. If you read the paper(the Post or the Daily News, I forgot) the next day, they asked people in the radio business and some actually said that his salary was a discount.
