To all Lurkers, Newbies, and Non-New Yorkers that want to understand the battle between the Opie & Anthony show in NY and Howard Stern:

I feel it ruins the point when people come onto either of the two message boards and write stupid crap like “Howard is a fag” or “O&A suck” w/o actually discussing what is really going on.

To a lot of you that are outside of the tri-state area Stern is still the best thing you have ever heard on the radio, but in the New York Market there is also Opie and Anthony show in the afternoon. Now I’m not trying to influence opinion about which show is better, but I want to lay out actual facts about what has been going on.

I was a fluent Stern listener from 1988 till shortly about time of his divorce in 1999 (around when the quality of Howard’s program started in a steep decline.)

Standing from a non-bias point of view, I discovered the O&A show after Howard went on a pointless rant that two nameless afternoon DJ’s in NY had also played a bootlegged copy of a Casey Kasem flipping out on co-workers. Stern had refused to mention the DJ’s names or the station they worked for. Being a Stern fan I thought is was weird because Howard had always mentioned people he didn’t like by name, such as Manqueer or Imus. I personally found it silly because it no different then Jay Leno & David Letterman discussing the same news clip. So I decided to give these guys a listen for myself to see what the big deal was.

Around this time, there was the beginning of a series of non-competitive actions that Howard & WXRK took to try to shut down the O&A show.

Some of these events have been:

(1) Sending KROCK lawyers trying to shut down WOW, because they claimed it was “a dangerous promotion that could cause traffic accidents and sexual assaults”
(2) Plus Howard tried to claim that he invented WOW in Washington but instead w/ the use of Bandanas.
(3) And of course the thing that made me finally punch out from listening to Stern anymore was the “GAG order” he had placed on the O&A show from mentioning any of the anti-competitive actions that Stern has been performing against there 1 market
(4) Calling on Infinity Lawyers to Prevent them from being syndicated and trying to shut down fan sites that are beaming the show over the net.
(5) Howard has also been responsible for trying to have Infinity executives treated the management of musical groups and celebrity guest to not go on the O&A show or else they will be banned appearing on his from his nationally syndicated show. Which is still relevant, because of the Monster Magnet/ Buck cherry incident that happened only a couple of weeks ago.

My question is why does he bother to do this? Even though both shows are in the #1 radio market in the world and both shows target young males as there demographic the O&A show is in the afternoon. After all the crap other DJ’s & Gov’t officials had tried to do to him in his career, why not embrace these guys and both try to change the ways of the FCC? But instead he is being a total hypocrite. When O&A use to be able mention Howard by name, they would state that they were fans that were partially influenced in going into radio because of the work he did years ago. All this has only cause the O&A show to up the quality of radio and risks they take.

Also from lurking around the stern fan network message board, you guys have also noticed a significant decrease in the quality of radio of the past 3 yrs.

Competition is healthy and I would respect stern more if he spent less time trying to oppress a afternoon radio show and try to bring back the energy that use to be there between 1988-1998.

Are there too many people blowing smoke up Sterns ass, telling him that the show has been great or are too afraid to approach him w/ constructive criticism? Why Howard obsessed with trying to prevent people from enjoying both shows? Has the massive growth of his celebrity status distanced him from being able to talk to his fan base? I don’t know. But the claims of clones is childish and far from the truth. The only similarities I see is the fact that that it’s guys talking about the things that guys like to talk about. O&A have very interactive show w/ their fan base unlike any media based entertainment show in the world.

I don’t know what caused Howard to become such a hypocrite against everything he use to stand for (from Freedom of Speech…to being against Fluff celebrity interviews… to being the family man who no matter what went on air still went home to his wife)
The reasons we listen to these shows were based on one thing, Comedy. So why does Howard only think people want to hear his jokes & opinions, if people don’t like either of the shows they can change the station, but he shouldn’t be trying to hinder people from making the own decisions.

I respect that-Where I'm from in the midwest,we have Howard in the morning and the guy I like(Frank O Pinion,he's like almost 60 years old and very funny in a down to earth way) in the afternoon,if O+A were in my area I would prob'ly be listening to them if I liked 'em better than who I already listen to in the afternoon.If they go national I'll give 'em a chance,All I want to do is get some laughs in my rather hum drum life and I don't care who makes me laugh,just please make me laugh-Peace :tu:

O&A suck! The only time they were ever semi interesting is when they talked about Stern. Their whole act is STERN! Do something new and innovative besides putting a stupid GAY sticker on your car.

I think Steve resents you going on and on and on interminably about those two afternoon deejays, who in the overall scheme of things are really not all that talented. I listened to them just last week for over two hours and all I can say is they were no better and no worse than any other garden variety announcers that you might hear in any market. What amazes me is that they made it to NYC.

And you KNOW if one of us went over to the other board and posted pro-Howard stuff over and over again, it wouldn't stay up there long.

Here you have true freedom of speech — something the other board doesn't seem to allow. (I've been there — it's not a pretty site)

As long as you post your stuff here in this forum where it belongs I have no problem with you saying whatever you want.

I could careless what Steve reponds to my posts. Anyone that disagrees with him he can't have an intelligent conversation with. Also when I post in General Chatter 99% of the time the O&A things has been dragged out by someone else already. I turned maybe 2 or 3 discussions at the most in GD to an O&A discussion every other one has been responces to what other member brought up.

The vast majority of SFN members have never even heard of them and the minority of people who are aware of them really don't care.

THIS is the appropriate forum for the very few who might care to care on such a discussion.

I don't turn any discussion into an O&A discussion. Almost all of them with the exception of maybe 2 or 3 threads the vast majority of my posts about O&A were by OTHER people that turned it into an O&A discussion NOT ME, I only RESPONDED to OTHER people that ALREADY brought up O&A.

When I was fourteen, maybe fifteen, I more or less idolized a local deejay. He used to broadcast every night from a restaurant where he had a booth set up so people could watch him play his records and talk on the radio. To me, the guy was a star and I would hang around talking to him for hours.

I'm an O&A fan, I don't even say I idolize them. You don't see me making stupid comments like O&A are gods are anything like that, something some Stern fans think about Howie.' O&A are down to earth regular people and they haven't let their success go to their heads like Howie. Yes, they aren't as big as Stern, but even when Stern just started on WNBC & wasn't nearly as big as he is now he always considered himself better than everyone. Stern never went to the bars and got drunk with his listners like O&A do.

So know going to bars and getting drunk with the fans makes them down to earth? Lets not forget Howard was married and had a child during the first part of his career in N.Y. Maybe that just isnt his thing. Ive never been out for a drink with Jerry Seinfeld either, but i still like his show too.

I'm not sure that "getting drunk with the fans" is a requirement for success.

Howard was married at a very young age and he preferred to spend his spare time at home with his family.

Admittedly, now he goes out to clubs that the average listener could never get in to, but that is a part of success — as well as a carefully crafted "image."

Trust me, if your two deejays ever achieve even a tenth of Howard's fame and success, they will not be so approachable.

Steve unlike you I'm not ignorant. I have heard quite a bit of both shows, made my opinions and post them. Some people on this board have a Howard is god. no one can ever be better ignorant attitude. If you don't like something fine and you can bash it, but to bash a show that you never heard or only heard a few times shows how ignorant and brainwashed you really are. Woots & Mutt have both said they would give them a try if they get syndicated to where they live. Thats the attitude to have, not the Howard doesn't like them so they must suck attitude.

Timj(5th grader)- How fucking stupid are you, I live in NYC, I listened to o&a on and off but what can I tell you, their just not very funny, sometimes when mike & the maddoog are on break or Kroc is playing a song I don't like, I'll tune into o&a but I cant stand the long bits, continuing laughing and etc, etc its just not a good show and this is exactly what I did not want to happen, I did not want this board to become an o&a board, leave us alone If we want to talk about o&a we will go to their board!!!

Gerry it was a few months ago, when I first came to the board. Anyone it doesn't just happen to me, whenever someone make a comment about how the Stern show has slipped the last couple of years they get lebeled an O&A fan. Some of them are, but O&A are not even relavent to that conversation. Someone tries to make a point about how the Stern show has slipped, hell the person could live in Cali & never heard of O&A, but it always becomes an O&A vs Stern issue started by Stern fans that can't take it that people feel the STern show has slipped

Look at the name of the forum. Its "hate mail" I use to be a big Stern fan, but I don't like the new direction of the show. I can see your point if you get pissed about these discussions in GD, but the hate mail forum is here for a reason, so those that don't like Stern can post. I personally have never heard their show. I downloaded some soundbites from their comedy album they put out and it was very,very bad. Of course, I don't think "Unclean Beaver" is a good representation of Howard either.

Can you guys post some of their funnier bits for us in the prank section?

Maybe we can listen to a couple and see what the fuss is all about.

I use to have some bits that I could post in the prank forum but when my comp crashed a few weeks ago lost everything. You can go to napster, audiogalazy or any other sites like that to check out O&A bits.

Go to Napster, type in "opie anthony" in the search box. Try "100 grand", anything dealing with Mike Tyson, Breuer days at Sears, "hi mom I'm ...", QVC Britney, "get the f_ck out", "green poopies", "tourettes whorehouse", "Ben Stein's phone call", "Dickens Cider", Louis Black talking about jail.

Sorry, I don't do napster. And besides I don't see why I have to work that hard. I get to listen to great, innovative radio every day. I don't need to spend my time looking for it.

Post away friend. Some of radio's hardcorest of fans reside here. Listening to Howard for 15-20 years you kind of start to understand GREAT radio and GREAT comedic minds and bits. Some fans here have been listening to radio more years than you have been alive. I trust that the fans here understand radio better than you give them credit for and as fans of Howard you can be assured that you will get an HONEST opinion about these new guys.

So post away. Don't worry. We will let you know when our sides start hurting.

Doc, if you want to see actual clips of video and or audio go to foundrymusic.com and than on the left hand side click on foundry media files by category. You can get audio clips from the show or sound bytes from Homer, South Park, etc, video clips of the show and of weird videos found on the net, offensive songs, games for your pc to download, soundboards. It is the best site I know of that has all of this stuff

Even if you don't like O&A you will find lots of stuff on here that are very interesting and that you will greatly enjoy.

That's a better idea and I will when I get a chance. I would rather see a bit posted here so that we, O & A and Stern fans alike can discuss it as impartial fans of radio.

An intelligent discussion about radio instead of all of this bravado.

Doc it is hard to post a particular bit, because it it is not really funny unless you actually hear it. That goes for O&A, that goes for Stern, that really goes for anybody. There is also a most popular section on that site. That should have audio and video of some of the more popular bits of their show.
One bit in particular that I liked that is on there is actor Jay Mohr was on and a gay guy called marco called up and they had gay phone sex.

I also recommend listening to the songs, especially from comedic artist Stephen Lynch. He has been on Comedy Central a few times and goes around the country.

Anthony doing Ronald Reagan Alzheimer bits are funny.

He also does a better Dice than the real Dice.

Another favorite is the OJ 911 Comedy tape. It was where OJ called into the police and reported his girlfriend was abusing him and Anthony did a bit about making it a prank phone call tape. Just look around. They give summaries of all the bits. Just click on whatever interests you.

It could take you days or even weeks to go through everything but like I said even if you have no interest in them, you should like the site for everything else it offers.
