Opie & Anthony fan gets
an earful over ambush
By RICHARD HUFF
DAILY NEWS TV EDITOR
It went too far, say Opie (l.) and Anthony.
A day after WABC/Ch. 7 correspondent Anthony Johnson was ambushed by a fan of the Opie and Anthony show on XM Satellite Radio, a station official said they're taking precautions to ensure employees' safety.
Separately, the radio hosts - Gregg (Opie) Hughes and Anthony Cumia - told listeners yesterday that they were calling off their "Assault on the Media" campaign, saying the incident with Johnson had gone too far.
It all started Tuesday morning when a man walked up behind Johnson with an Opie and Anthony sign and sounded an air horn near the reporter's ear.
Viewers didn't see the incident, although they heard the horn.
Ch. 7 "is going to do whatever necessary to assure the safety of our crew," assistant news director Bill McFarland said yesterday.
McFarland wouldn't discuss whether Johnson was injured in the incident. He was not on the air yesterday.
However, New Jersey's acting governor, Richard Codey, released a statement Tuesday saying the air-horn blast could result in "permanent hearing damage for the reporter who was harassed."
Codey also said that encouraging fans to intervene in live news shows was "inappropriate and dangerous."
Johnson was reporting on the snow in Ocean, N.J., during the incident. At the time, even his on-air colleagues had no idea he'd been attacked. Indeed, after the segment, co-anchor Steve Bartlestein joked about Johnson's hat.
Opie and Anthony couldn't be reached for comment.
"This appears to be the unfortunate and irresponsible act of one individual," said an XM spokesman. "We do not condone this act."
On their Web site and on the air, Opie and Anthony repeatedly told listeners - who they referred to as "pests" - not to swear and not to get into fights with correspondents or producers during the campaign.
It was the same campaign that got a guy on the air during an Arthur Chi'en report at WCBS/ Ch. 2. Chi'en, frustrated with the commotion behind him, dropped an F-bomb. He was fired by Ch. 2 and now works at WPIX/Ch. 11.
Other stations have faced the disruptions during live shots, though in most cases, they've simply pulled away from the shot when the O&A fans turned up.
The Johnson incident, however, was the first time the fan took it this far.
In his statement, Codey said the person who "committed this act should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
O&A Call Off "Assault On The Media" Campaign
December 8, 2005
XM's Opie & Anthony have ended their "Assault on the Media" campaign, where fans would disrupt newscasts with guerilla promotions for the duo's radio show, after an "assault" went awry earlier this week. WABC/New York TV newscaster Anthony Johnson was surprised by an O&A fan, who sounded an air horn behind his ear as he held up an O&A sign. The ambush caused an uproar, with New Jersey acting governor Richard Codey even releasing a statement decrying the fan's actions and calling the "Assault" plan "inappropriate and dangerous."
O&A announced on-air that they were calling off the campaign, and a spokesperson for XM told the New York Daily News that "This appears to be the unfortunate and irresponsible act of one individual. We do not condone this act." Opie & Anthony had repeatedly told their fans not to swear or get into a fight while conducting the campaign.
Earlier this year, the "Assault" led to a New York TV reporter being distracting and cursing on-air. Reporter Arthur Chi'en was fired for the slip, but later hired by another station.
In other O&A news, the duo appear to be indirectly taking a swipe at Howard Stern's Sirius content, announcing "Tissue Time With Beth And Allison." The phone sex-themed show sound remarkably similar to Stern's "Tissue Time With Heidi" show that airs on his Sirius station. In a statement, Gregg "Opie" Hughes says, "I think this one is so brilliant it is bound to be ripped off sooner than later." Co-host Anthony Cumia added, "The key to the success of the 'Tissue Time with Beth & Allison' show will be that we will have listeners come forward and participate, as opposed to trying to lull the audience to sleep."

Yea, I can totally see that happening for an image what your saying. From what I understand O/A have their contracts reviewed yearly for renewal.
Morning Wood 12-08-2005, 11:22 PM why is this thread titled o&a getting fired? what's with this trickery? you trickster.
Sirius_Sam22 12-08-2005, 11:23 PM I was lurking and came across a post saying they might be fired and if members would cancel their XM to get Sirius

Pussah 12-09-2005, 04:26 AM Tissue time with Alisson and Beth. You don't sense any sarcasm there. Opie said it was an original idea he came up with when he went back to his hometown after 25 years and did not recognize his house and started crying. They are making fun of it, that's all.
deadlarrygreen 12-09-2005, 05:26 AM Down with opie&anthony

So esentially these bunkbirds sat around at a writing meeting and came up with this. Love me daddy.
