Billboard's Take On MLK Phrase 'Disrespectful'

CHICAGO -- Billboards are designed to catch your eye, but there's a billboard on the South Side that's catching heat from neighborhood activists.

The billboard promotes the upcoming Howard Stern Show on Sirius satellite radio and is located at 86th Street and Lafayette Avenue.

It comes with a provocative message: "Let freedom ring and let it be rung by a stripper."

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, of St. Sabina Church, is demanding that the billboard be taken down.

He says to take a phrase made popular by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and trivialize it is disrespectful and unacceptable.

"As we prepare to celebrate Dr. King's birthday, we will not tolerate this kind of disrespect ... we should not have to tolerate it in our communities," Pfleger said.

Billboard rental is usually in 6 month blocks anyway. If the church goes to court, it might take that long... Chances are Sirius won't renew the billboards anyway. In 6 months, Howard's arrival in Sirius won't be 'new' anymore and Sirius will either do something new or they'll let the billboards go (my take).

The Stern audience really is a family (not to sound gay) and if you really take time to get to know the show its really all about freedom to say what you think and respect for all points of view - no matter how rational or irrational.
