View Full Version : Trip to Ground Zero - 9/11/02
Widget & I felt that we should drive into the city for the anniversary of 911 and pay our respects. We met up with Joey Boots, High Pitch Eric, and Dan the Song Parody Man (Author of the Howard Stern 911 Metalica Mix). We visited Ground Zero and shared beers while remembering all that has happend. Below are photos and a description of the events of the day. I wasn't in a great picture taking mood, but at least I snapped off a couple.

It was a long day and even though we kept things vey low key, there was still alot that happend.
Howard played SFN member, Dan The Song Parody Man's 911 Stern Show remix and the gang really liked it. 3 SFN members were prominently featured in the remix Joey Boots, Zolar, and Crazy Cabbie. Dan was very cool and plugged SternFanNetwork.com. Howard played the High Pitch Eric / Sal the Stockbroker (both SFN members) crank call and everyone laughed. I hadn't even left the house yet, and already so much had happened.
Widget & I drove up to NYC to pay our respects. We left Philly around 8:30 & listened to Howard. The show was just finishing up as we were parking the jeep Near Rockefeller Center. We were early so we walked through Times Square and did some shopping. We ran into the Naked Cowboy again. He was being interviewed by someone and I heard him say that he was the American dream. :)
We met up with High Pitch and Rockefeller Center and I made sure he knew that this was a day for remembrance and not a day to run around yelling "kill! kill! kill!". He was wearing his ice, a brand new HPE pendant on a huge silver chain. He was very proud of it. We walked through the faces of 9-11 display (many incredible photos & stories about Ground Zero survivors) and then hit the ice rink bar to wait for the others. We met a couple of Secret Service agents sitting at the bar. (they were drinking soda) The one guy was a fan of Erics and wanted a photo. I had 2 conditions, show me your credentials and let me snap a pic for the site. He agreed to both, and i have to say that his ID / badge was much cooler looking than when you see them in the movies. To protect the very nice secret service man who was in town to protect the President, I'll have to blur out his face, but it's still a very cool pic.
Dan the Song Parody Man showed up with KiraKat and her daughter. Dan ran into Elephant boy on his way and grabbed a nice photo. he didn't want to join us. He said that he doesn't do the show anymore and that his life is much better now. Dan had the paper with him and in it was an article about yet another SFN member, Nicloe Bass. The photo of her was one of the ones she sent me and is in the SFN photo album (thieves). Mr Joey Boots arrived shortly afterwards. Sal the Stockbroker and Zolar never made it.
We caught the subway into the village to get some lunch. Eric stopped a fire truck and shook hands with the firemen. He looked like a little kid on christmas morning. ;) We had a nice mexican lunch and talked about September 11th. I had brought the time life 911 book with me. It has lots of photos and sotries from the entire disaster. Eric crank called SFN member, Doc. He tried to use a low voice and though you could still tell it was him, it was so funny that he at least tried. Since he's in training for the fight, he ordered a salad. As we left, the trashmen were picking up the trash. Eric helped the trashmen. He was the one source of comedy for us. It helped make the day bearable.
We wanted to go to battery Park, but it was getting late. Instead we walked down to Ground Zero. Erik talked to lots of cops along the way. We rested on the church steps for a half hour. We couldn't go any further, because the vips from the president's visit were still on their way out. it was a really sad moment. they finally let us in and it turns out that they forgot to put all of the barracades back up. we all walked past the gate and into Ground Zero. I could hear people saying that this was the first time they've let the general public in. As we continued further in, the fence stopped and i started think how wierd it was that they let us into this point. At the far end of the huge hole that used to be the twin towers, people had actually climbed out onto the scafolding to take photos. They finally realized that we were all in too far and asked us to go back to the other side of the fence. (hundreds of people were already in) it was incredible to look at the enormous void in the ground where these building used to stand. I snapped a couple pics, but it just didn't feel right. There were assholes climbing the fences or sticking their cameras through holes on the concrete so they could get better pics. i din't want to be associated with them, so I finally put it away and pulled out only to take something that moved me. By the time we left, we had to go home. We weren't in any mood to hit the bar. We just wanted to go home.
Heard Dan's song on KROCK on the ride home.

The foundations are actually below sea level. The river has been pushing in the foundations and eventually, all of this would have become part of the river. The cement trucks are on hand trying to hold back the river. They drill 700' into the ground on an angle, insert cables, pump it full of concrete forming anchors for the old foundations. I have no idea that this was even going on.</td>

It's hard to see in this little photo, but if you look at the back wall of the hole, you can tell just how deep & wide it actually is.</td>

A message from the workers. 'We will never forget' I know Widget & I won't.</td>

This steel cross is wreckage from the tower. It was found sticking out of the wreckage, broken in the form of a cross, with an anchor foot on the bottom. The workers poured this new concrete base and mounted it here.</td>

The hole was massive and depressing. It dropped down several stories. It's hard to believe that two 100 story buildings used to stand here.</td>

I couldn't take anymore pictures. Widget was already in tears and we just needed to leave.<br><br>

donandmikesuck 09-13-2002, 09:19 AM Nice collection. Two questions:
1) Who's that KiraKat honey?
and
2) SongParodyMan - anybody ever tell you that you look like Handsome Dick Manitoba from the Dictators?

I'm seldom called handsome, often called a dick, and never been to Manitoba, but I haven't heard that one yet..I usually get ribbed with the B. Real/Cypress Hill lookalike thing. Post a pic, I'm sure it would be good for a laugh, and if he really does look like me, boy do I feel sorry for him!
For those of us who cannot be there to see what it's like those are amazing pictures, thank you so much Mutt. I had a few people in the office surrounded my computer looking at all of them. It brought tears to my eyes man, thanks a lot.

LOL.
Not too much of this character on the web, but here's one very bad photo:

Doesn't do much for my observation, but whatever.

mustangsal 08-04-2006, 07:09 PM Mutt,
Nice job! I've listen for years, but never know about this until sirius. Love the site.
This is powerful. I ride on a vollunteer rescue company in central jersey. We got called up that day. Unfortunately, not much we could do other then help out best we could. The next time I saw it was when the Path station opened again... I was on my way to a job downdown, and totally forgot about where the path ended. I felt like an idiot, a 30 something guy with tears in his eyes as the train entered the WTC station.
wedge15 08-13-2006, 08:56 PM Mutt, those are really cool pictures. This will be something that you will never forget.

Targus 07-12-2008, 12:00 PM Looks great!
Froggy 07-12-2008, 12:06 PM it is so depressing there; every time i have to pass by the pit i try to get away as quickly as possible. the worst part about taking the path from there is that the tracks circle the pit: it's like a ride at disneyland, except in really bad taste.

driver351 11-02-2008, 08:47 AM the pics you took were all good but a sad reminder of what happened that morning
