Mayor Bloomberg and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter today settled a first-of-its kind bet on the World Series by helping paint a Bronx junior high school.

Bloomberg and Nutter were on hand at JHS 131 to settle the bet and encourage more people to give back to their communities.

The terms of the bet dictated the losing mayor would travel to the winning city to join the winning mayor in a volunteer service project, while wearing the winning team’s jersey.

As a result of the Yankees win over the Phillies in the World Series earlier this month, Nutter honored the bet by painting the school while wearing a No. 55 Yankees home jersey in honor of World Series MVP Hideki Matsui.

Bloomberg wore a No. 27 jersey in honor of the Yankees 27th title.

“The Phillies were a tough team, but I knew Mayor Nutter was going to end up looking great in pinstripes,” joked Bloomberg. “The Yankees are the World Champions, but the real winners are of course the students with us today who are learning how they can make a difference in their own school."

Nutter was also a good sport.

“Congratulations on the New York Yankees victory," he said. "I am sure that the team and Mayor Bloomberg will do a great job of looking after the World Series trophy until the Phillies take it back next year."

After scoring a game-winning goal in overtime against the Tampa Bay Lightning last night, Anaheim Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer skated towards some fans and tried to give his stick to a girl in the stands. He may have overestimated the home crowd, however, as his gesture was met by a swarm of aggressive fans fighting for the stick. Within seconds spectators began punching each other in a furious effort to claim the souvenir. In an interview afterward, Niedermayer said the stick was "for a little girl," which did not seem to stop bystanders from battling for it.

Revenge of the Iraqi detainees: Brett Favre jokes
By Rick Chandler

You think you know how to torture, America? Waterboarding is for schoolchildren. Detainees locked in an internment camp in Iraq are mocking their captors -- members of the Wisconsin National Guard -- with Brett Favre jokes.

Evil bastards!

It all started when the National Guardsmen began decorating their trucks and other areas of Camp Cropper with Packers colors recently. The prisoners picked up on it, did some research (Wiraqipedia?), and began with the Favre barbs. What goes around comes around, I suppose. I blame Dick Cheney.

"They know Favre by name," said First Lieutenant Tim Boehnen, who is from New Richmond, Wis.
"One of the big words they know now is shenanigan. They'll constantly talk about 'Favre shenanigans,' 'He's so good for the Vikings,' and 'The Packers have got to really feel bad about that one.' "
According to Boehnen, it started when troops there started decorating their camp in Packers colors.
"They obviously then started up the conversations, and started talking about Brett Favre. They soon learned about Favre going to the Vikings, and things just started going downhill from there."
Boehnen said soccer is the main sport that detainees pay attention to there, so there's not exactly a Vikings fan club chapter in Iraq.
"They'll hear guards talking about it, and then they pick up a lot of stuff from that, too," said Boehnen. "They're very crafty. They learn different stuff from different ways."
Once they learn a little more about football, they can start increasing the pressure: Like calling for Matt Flynn to replace Aaron Rodgers, or making fun of cheese.

Marv Albert, the veteran NBA announcer for TNT, was a guest on the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" show. The musical star was rapper 50 Cent. As Albert arrived, with an entourage of one, TNT public relations specialist Jeff Pomeroy, there was a sudden scuffle when a multitude of 50 Cent protectors seemed unfamiliar with Albert. There was shouting ("It's Marv Albert," yelled a Kimmel show guard, a pronouncement that seemed to have no effect on the 50 Cent phalanx.) There were obscenities. A fist or two flying. A "Don't you put your hands on me" pronouncement.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...9S30.DTL&tsp=1
Ricky Williams is 32 and far from done. And even without Ronnie Brown, the once written-off Miami Dolphins are back in the playoff picture.
Williams’ previous positive drug tests were for marijuana, which he acknowledged using.

Williams rushed for 119 yards and scored three touchdowns, and the Dolphins beat the Carolina Panthers 24-17 on Thursday night for their fourth win in six games.

Second Cy Young is historic.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...TL&type=sports

Giants starter Tim Lincecum, one of baseball's most dazzling and charismatic players, made history Thursday when he won baseball's highest pitching honor, the Cy Young Award, for a second consecutive season.
At 25, Lincecum is the youngest NL pitcher to win consecutive Cy Youngs. The three others who have done it are among the game's most heralded stars: Sandy Koufax, Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson, a teammate with the Giants in 2009 who urged Lincecum not to be complacent after winning last year and to shoot forcefully for more Cy Youngs.
A motorcycle officer who stopped Lincecum smelled marijuana in the car and asked him to produce any drugs that he had. Lincecum acknowledged that he did have drugs and opened the center console of his 2006 Mercedes, handing the officer 3.3 grams of marijuana, just under one-eighth of an ounce, and a pipe.

Longtime baseball writer and editor Glenn Stout went back into the archives to see if he could turn up any published evidence of racism by the Red Sox Owner at that time: Tom Yawkey. What he culled, from a 1965 SPORTS ILLUSTRATED piece on Yawkey, was startling.

Upon examination, Yawkey’s final statement - “We scouted them right along, but we didn’t want one because he was a Negro. We wanted a ballplayer,” might be the most telling statement of all.

For if we follow Yawkey’s logic – “We looked for black ballplayers but we wanted talent first and foremost” – then compare it to the fact that from the time of (Jackie) Robinson’s signing through July of 1959 the Red Sox neither put an African player on the major league field who they signed themselves nor traded for one, the conclusion is inescapable: Tom Yawkey and his organization simply did not believe that any African American ballplayer had the talent to play for the Red Sox.

This, despite the fact that they were playing on every other team in baseball, and that by 1959 there were dozens and dozens of African Americans winning championships, winning Cy Young awards and MVP awards and playing on All-Star teams throughout the major leagues, players like Henry Aaron, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, Don Newcombe and many, many, many more.

But none, apparently, were good enough for Boston. “We wanted ballplayers,” indeed.

“They blame me, and I’m not even a Southerner. I’m from Detroit.” Yawkey remains on his South Carolina fief until May because Boston weather before then is too much for his sensitive sinuses. “I have no feeling against colored people,” he says. “I employ a lot of them in the South. But they are clannish, and when that story got around that we didn’t want Negroes they all decided to sign with some other club. Actually, we scouted them right along, but we didn’t want one because he was a Negro. We wanted a ballplayer.”

So Yawkey said “clannish” black ballplayers were boycotting the Red Sox!

To confirm the absurdity of that notion, Stout contacted Dr. Lawrence Hogan, a Professor of History at Union College in New Jersey who is also a pre-eminent Negro League historians in the country and the author of Shades of Glory, published by National Geographic and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The book is largely credited with being the “definitive history of Black baseball in America.”

Stout asked Hogan about the possibility that black ballplayers may have colluded in refusing to sign with the Red Sox, as Yawkey suggested. His response:

“I have never heard even the slightest suggestion of either thing you mention happening. I am sure there were players good enough to be signed who were not because of the glacial pace of integration. But I can ot imagine any Negro League player turning down an offer, other than on the normal personal grounds of not enough money being offered, or wanting to get on with life in a non-baseball way.”

In case you think this is all common knowledge, read Stout’s entire piece, as he cites Boston media apologists, like the late Will McDonough, who continually defended Yawkey as being anything but racist. Why do I have a feeling that in today’s online media age, Yawkey wouldn’t have been granted such favorable treatment?

I didn’t post this to smear the Red Sox, or Yawkey. I had never heard those comments from the former Red Sox Owner, and when I read them, I was appalled. Dumbstruck. It’ll be interesting to see if this creates any dialogue among the revision historians still ensconced in The Bean.
That's the "experts" pick. I think Tim deserved it more than any other but it could've gone either way. Seems as if it's one of the closest Cy races in history. Any opinions liking or disliking the decision?

Tim Lincecum Goes Back-to-Back With Tight Win

Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants was elected the National League Cy Young Award winner for the second consecutive year in balloting by the BBWAA. Lincecum had the lowest victory total over a full season of any starting pitcher who won the award in either league.

The previous low victory total for a Cy Young Award-winning starter in a season not affected by a strike was by Brandon Webb, who was 16-8 for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006. It was matched Tuesday by 2009 American League winner Zack Greinke, who was 16-8 for the Kansas City Royals.

The election also marked only the second time that a pitcher won the award without receiving the most first-place votes. Of the 32 ballots submitted by two writers in each league city, Lincecum (15-7, 2.48 ERA) was listed first on 11, one fewer than the St. Louis Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright (19-8, 2.63 ERA), who finished third overall behind teammate Chris Carpenter (17-4, 2.24 ERA), the 2005 winner.

Lincecum was named second on 12 ballots and third on nine for a total of 100 points, based on a 5-3-1 tabulation system. In addition to his 12 first-place votes, Wainwright got five seconds and 15 thirds to score 90 points. Lincecum and Wainwright were the only pitchers on all ballots. Carpenter was first on nine ballots, second on 14 and third on seven for 94 points.

The only other time a pitcher won the Cy Young Award without the most first-place votes was in 1998 when the Atlanta Braves’ Tom Glavine had 11 to San Diego Padres reliever Trevor Hoffman’s 13 but out-pointed him overall, 98-88.

The six-point margin was tied for the third closest election in the NL since the ballot expanded from one to three pitchers in 1970. The 10-point margin among the top three vote getters was the second closest in NL voting. In 1987, Philadelphia Phillies reliever Steve Bedrosian beat out the Chicago Cubs’ Rick Sutcliffe, 57-55, with Rick Reuschel, who pitched for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants that year, running a close third with 54 points.

The second closest 1-2 election was in 1981 with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Fernando Valenzuela defeating the Cincinnati Reds’ Tom Seaver, 70-67. This year’s election equals that of 1979 when the Cubs’ Bruce Sutter edged the Houston Astros’ Joe Niekro, 72-66.

Lincecum, one of only two Giants pitchers honored (left-hander Mike McCormick won in 1967), led the NL in strikeouts with 261 in 225 1/3 innings and was tied for the league lead in complete games (4) and shutouts (2). Carpenter led the league in ERA and winning percentage (.810). Wainwright topped the NL in victories and innings (233).

Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson share the record for consecutive Cy Young victories with four. As a repeat winner, Lincecum also joins Sandy Koufax (1965-66) in the NL. AL repeat winners were Roger Clemens, who did it twice (1986-87, 1997-98), Denny McLain (1968-69), Jim Palmer (1975-76) and Pedro Martinez (1999-2000).
