They should retire... I saw them two years ago and it was pathetic.

They used to be a tremendous studio outfit, but their tours were always hit and miss. Its time to call it a day on the band.

In High School during the late 70's, they were my favorite American band. I never put them on a level with The Stones, Who, Queen, or the great British bands, but still saw them about 10 times, including the show in Cleveland Stadium after which Perry quit for the first time. I still consider 'Rocks' to be one of the greatest rock albums ever made.

'Permanent Vacation' in '87 or so was a disappointment for me, but I gave them a pass because I figured they were just writing a couple shit songs to sell some records to get some cash flow again. Unfortunately, 'Pump' and 'Get a Grip' each sucked worse than the next, and by 'Nine Lives' they were unlistenable. For me, it wasn't just the music...shitty power ballads, crap like 'Pink', but also the whole attitude and image. Joe Perry, who had proudly bragged about how ugly he looked on-screen in 'Sgt Peppers..' was now buff and tanned. Steven Tyler had become a parody of a rock star instead of an actual rock star.

The worst thing that ever happened to Aerosmith was getting clean and sober. The riffs and lyrics they came up with during the druggy days were legendary. You can listen to those old records and just hear that big gob of coke lodged in Tyler's throat while he was letting loose with those screams. As macabre as it sounds, I think younger people would have been better off knowing Aerosmith from listening to their parents' old albums after Tyler and Perry OD'ed and died 30 years ago, than thinking that the pretend Aerosmith of recent years is the real deal.

gotta give cred where cred's due on this one, doc. i haven't seen them recently, and i'm sad to hear they suck so bad anymore. i just remember the concerts from the past. watching joe perry sing and play hendrix's 'red house', while "steven's backstage, getting a little head", in joe's words, was fucking awesome.

just hate to see a classic rock band call it quits, that's all.

and the previous posters are right. hope aerosmith doesn't go the van halen-gary cherone route. end it now, fellas, knowing you left your mark in rock music...

sorry i missed this post. 'rocks' is top ten of no time, no question. good one, henry...

fucking rock bands sobering up scares me. randy rhoads sobered up, goes on a plane ride, and fucking dies. felt like crying that day. ok,call me a pussy- it's the truth.
same with stevie ray vaughn. sobers up, and fucking dies. but boy george lives on. now how much justice is there in that. go figure.

i'm with you henry, and this is what i like about artie lange. wished these kids today could experience what we did back then. concert dvd's don't show what we seen then. and artie's right. fucking guys playing their own instruments and singing live with no synth voice bullshit- wow, what a concept...

Odds are Tyler's been on pain meds and they were doing what was required of them. They lost a lot of money, Perry's been pissed, and they probably said nothing to each other over the past couple of weeks. The CNN clip of Aerosmith in Abu Dhabi - Tyler looked like he might have been feeling no pain.

But hopefully the other guys in Aerosmith will tell Joe no as far as carrying the band on without Steven, get them together for one huge show at the stadium and call it a day, get the special guests out, and have a good time with it. If Perry decides to keep Aerosmith going as a band, it's purely about money and fans will think it's a really bad idea, esp. in their home city. They'll get some American Idol replacement. A 40 year run for a rock band that's gone through the ups and downs they have is pretty significant.
