NEW YORK -- Lawyers for TV network TNN have filed court papers by Spike Jones Jr., son of the legendary music satirist, saying it is "frightening" that filmmaker Spike Lee is trying to claim exclusive ownership of the name "Spike." Lee won a court injunction June 13 that stopped Viacom, the country's third-biggest media company, from changing TNN's name to Spike TV on June 16 as planned.

Lee, who directed Malcolm X and Do The Right Thing, claimed the rebranding was an attempt to hijack his name and reputation.

Viacom said it wanted to change the cable network's name to Spike TV to try to attract more men to its audience. The company said Lee, could not prove that its use of the name "Spike" referred to him.

Jones said in court papers that he and his family own the rights to the name, likeness, recorded performances and TV shows that belonged to his father, the 1940s and '50s bandleader.

A biographical movie about his father, with the tentative title, Spike, is in the works, Jones said, and was concerned that the injunction against Viacom would hinder production.

"I do not believe that Spike Lee 'owns' or has any individual right to the use of the name 'Spike' or as an individual to prevent its use by others any more than I do," Jones said.

Jones' father had hits with the songs Yes, We Have No Bananas, Der Fuehrer's Face and Don't Hit Your Grandma With a Shovel.

and isnt there a music video / movie director and actor named Spike Jonze? He was in "THree Kings" (the dumb white guy who worshiped Mark Wahlberg) and he was also in that Fatboy Slim video where the guy is dancing outside a movie theater.

Actually Spike Jones Jr. filed the suit. Spike Jones Sr. is dead. The dudes father was a kind of Weird Al in the 50's doing funny songs. The suit I think is claiming how can Spike Lee have total control of the name "Spike" when that is not even his given name. This is the stupidest law suit in a long time. I still am in shock. I like this channel. I hope they win.
