Anybody else have their's die? This one I bought Dec 22 and it now just displays the Sirius logo. No audio. Took 4 calls and 30 minutes to get them to tell me they'd send a new one - in 4 - 6 weeks! So, no Stern for more than a month. Anybody else have problem like this?
huntr

I had a sportster die the day after I bought it in July 2005. I was instructed to take it back to Circuit City, where I bought it. Circuit City was out of the sportsters, so I got a very similar Audiovox PNP3 as a replacement. It has worked just fine ever since and I have it on constantly whenever it's in the house. And, I bring it from house to car to office to other car, etc.
lisa22222
did you leave it on all day and night? maybe it was too hot and then died.. I have to shut mine off after about 5 hours then let it cool off...
bullitt2006
So go get an S50
stevecvg
I have a Sportster Replay. I leave it on a lot, but I always turn the display setting to the lowest allowable.

Never had any problems so far.

Jam_On017
Great, everything falling apart. The thing that sucks is that I have an Audiovox model that was discontinued after one f'n year. If anything goes on mine, I have to pray that it's available on E-Bay.

I cannot explain in words how upset I would be if my Sportster broke. It is my favorite possession.
Redline.
I have my Starmate Replay on for at least 8 hours a day and mine never overheats.
lisa22222
well at work my boss also has sirius but a smaller unit, not the same as mine, he spends 30 mins a day moving the antenna even thou its into the window.. Also ater 8 hours his sirius unit is boiling hot when we turn it off we need an oven mitt

You could go buy a new one, then take the on Sirius sends you and sell it on Ebay. That way, you have Howard on Monday and you'll get your money back. (Hopefully)

funny. not that spending another few hundred dollars on a fucking radio wouldn't be great, but, the wife and I are in for like $600 to sirius already. not the greatest option.

very funny. ironically, i got my $50 rebate a couple of weeks ago. so, between the two of us, we apparently have 1 account that works okay. :D

I have a sportster replay that I got for a christmas gift on Dec 20th, the remote wasnt working properly from the beginning, some of the lights were not working. Then the channels would change on their own when on a bumpy road. It was a short in the unit. I fought it out with Sirius and their warranty company and after 2 months I got a new one, atleast my original worked at home so I didnt miss any Howard. Supply on these units is/was tight so it takes a bit of time to get a new one.

the heat these units generate is pretty intense and I think this is a big part of the issue, its one of the reasons I didnt convert to a lifetime membership.

probably your best bet to do that every 29 days, based on the advice that sirius gave me. :D
DICKWAD
I have an old Brix starmate, I leave it on
all day and most of the night. no problems
yet. Costco has the replay for 119.00
looks sweet. I cant believe hoe small the
antennas have gotten

go get a new one, then return the one they send you back to the store...

I got my Sportster in November of 2004. It's still going strong.

I'm getting so frustrated with Sirius's inability to maintain a satellite connection in my car. I must have an "antenna not detected" signal 75% of the time when I'm driving to work.
anigavym
go buy one, and then when your replacement comes, just return the one you bought. Did you have a lifetime sub?

no 2 year subsc for both me and the wife.

What a bummer -- I feel for you! I have a Sportster Replay that has worked fine since December except for once when my pre-sets all erased. I am concerned about how hot these units can get. I keep the display turned all the way down and I don't push it all the way in when it's in the boom box. This gives it more air to breathe and cool off. Good luck getting a replacement.
Anarchess
I have had the Sportster since November of '05. I use it in the boombox and it does get hot. Some button lights are out. Not altogether a good quality radio at all. Most of us are into Sirius for a decent chunk of change already. We shouldn't have to sink more money into it. I wonder if Howard knows that it's really not a great product. He has touted Sirius technology as cutting edge, but we all know it isn't. We only go through this for the King!
oxygen man
my volume was stock on high I could not get it to move up or down I disconected it for a half hour and pluged it back in the boombox and that reset everything works fine now
gorm73
The only problem I have had is the lights on part of it have blown out, it's dark in some spots on my sportster because I am guessing some of the Blue bulbs burnt out. They told me they would send a new one in a month or so!!
JLUSSIER413
i've got the starmate replay and have 0 problems
royaltrux
My radio had the same problem on the 3rd day of the show....& I still havent heard the show since........I had the SR70 which has been out of stock for a couple of months now (even though I was told it would be restocked in 2-3 weeks). Fucking sucks.....It's been nearly two months & no Howard

My number lights are starting to go out too. I'm gonna start looking to see if there's a better radio out there somewhere before this thing dies. I guess the company that builds the Sportsters weren't planning on people doing crazy things to them like.....Oh I dunno.... using them, I guess. :D

If thats the case it sounds like the antenna cable might be dodgy rather than the unit, this is what happened to me, the plug and of the antenna broke and the connection was very iffy, I ended up buying a whole new car cradle kit to fix the problem as I couldn't find anywhere that sold the anteanna seperately ther than on line and it was only $10 cheaper than the whole shooting match.

I got my Sirius Sportster replay in July 2005 and have done nothing but abuse the shit out of the fucking thing, it has been dropped countless times, its scratched to all holy fuck and is covered in paint overspray and bondo, the boombox is barely recognisable as a Sirius unit

But it works like a charm. The only issues I have had is with the car cradle antenna's and that is entirely my own fault as I am so hard on the unit, moving it from vehicle to vehicle etc.
USMCMatt
I've lost several lights on my sportster too...

Sirius's hardware is so freeking bad... I hope the nextgen of recievers is better
beaniec
My feeling is that basically all of the plug and play units are pretty shitty-technology was too new and assembly was rushed to meet demand, plus the plug and play units are often handled excessivley (moving from car to house etc).

I just hope that by the time my starmate replay dies, they will have come out with something better than what is currently out there
DoucheNozzle
My entire backlight on my Sportster Replay is out. It flickers on when I hit bumps or if I put pressure on the face. Otherwise, it stays off. It is 3 and a half months old. Sucks. Wish I had gone with the Starmate Replay. Don't see many complaints about that one.
idioteque
Does anyones sportster sometimes turn on playing at half speed (like a record that's running too slow)? I got mine over a year ago and sometimes it just gets in this mode where its doing that.

Haven't had that happen to mine, but every once in a while it changes channels by itself.

My sportster gets extremely hot. I thought it may be a defect. I guess it's not if everyone else has had a similar experience. The one time i put the backlight on auto (it adjusts the brightness to the amount of light needed). When the light was dim, yet still visible, it seemed to not be as hot. Anyone else experience with the lighting?

how do you put it on auto because mine gets really hot also. I just thought it was because I had it on too long until one time I noticed I had it on for like 20 minutes and it was hot as hell!
Scotty4X4
Go to SAM'S Club and buy your next receiver. They are sold at a great price and they have a GREAT RETURN POLICY! I work there and we have people bring back tv's that are 3 YEARS OLD and we have to take them back - as long as you have a receipt. Put your receipt in a safe place and you are good to go!
F-Timmy
As with all electronics, extreme heat can't be good for it. When mine is in the boombox, I leave the thing popped open if it's not going anywhere. Seems to keep it a little cooler. Turning your backlight down seems to help too.
Deb
I have an S50, and never turn the power off. When I turn off the car, it powers off; I wonder if I'm ruining it that way.

Go under menu, and then display. There should be an option under brightness or something similar where you can set it to Manual or Auto. That is for the replay sportster with the blue light. Not the original older model. I'm not sure if that is offered with the older version.

It's a shame. I love the product, but from the sounds of it... the could use a little more money in their budget for r&d. Put out quality stuff. When you buy a receiver you expect it to last a few years. Not a few months. I should shut my mouth cause outside of the heat, mine works fine (knock on wood)

my buttons are starting to die also, i thought it was just a fluke but it sounds like its just a shity piece of equipment. too bad sirius couldnt just buy XM's technology department. glad i didnt get the lifetime subscription.

I've had mine since November but hadn't really been playing it for long periods of time until Howard started in January. Now I typically have it on for about 12 hours a day. I do transport it a lot from home to car to work but I haven't had any problems yet. I only seems to get "warm" after an 8 to 9 hour day at work not really "hot". Not that I think about it, it seems to get hotter being in the boombox than in it's Home Adapator cradle. I used to remember it getting "hot" before when I only played it in the boombox but now that I play it much less in the boombox I don't remember it getting nearly as hot.
Looking at the boombox right now I think it doesn't offer nearly as much ventilation as is probably needed.

When you put it in the boombox, don't close it if it's gonna be in one place for a while. Just leave it open, It'll still work, but it will have more ventilation.

I have the starmate replay and have not powered it down since the day I bought it Dec. 30 Not one single problem at all.

same here...they get pretty hot. i have numbers 1 & 2 dead...but the unit works fine...i couldnt see plunking down the hard-earned for a lifetime sub when it is tied to that unit only...doesnt seem fair if a unit dies in a year or two I just gave up 600 for that.....i'll stay on month to month thanks
JoeMark
When you guys talk about your buttons not working... does that just mean the lights or does the actual button not work anymore?
DoucheNozzle
I haven't had any button light problems. Has anyone else had any problem with their blue blacklight fritzing out? As I described before, mine flickers on and off. It is pressure sensitive...if I press on the face of the Sportster Replay when it is in the car dock or the boombox, the light will turn on...otherwise it is usually off unless I hit a bump or something.
jayba420
I got my sportster christmas 04' and it still works great... all lights.. everything.. i have noticed that sometimes if i shut my car off and turn it right back on... it sometimes comes up with just the logo frozen on the screen... but all i have to do is turn it off and turn it back on... and its fine... thats only happened like twice in the past 2 yrs though.. also one time it blew my cig lighter fuse ... i thought the reciever was the prob at first but once i checked and replaced the fuse it was fine.. i hope it stays that way... looks like the hardware has som issues if that many people are having the same problem... BTW just bought the executive docking station for the sporster... it kicks ass... very well made.
