I assume you guys have heard of this by now but thought I would post it anyway. Sirius is releasing the Sportster 4. It has mainly the same features as the Sportster Replay but is 40% smaller. I’m assuming (due to small size) this uses the 3.0 chip instead of the 2.5 chip the Sportster Replay came out with. This means it should use less power and run somewhat cooler. It will require new/small docking stations and boombox. It seems it will come with an air vent clip as well as suction cup with the car dock. It does seem to have an aux input which should work with MP3 players. It’s a nice looking unit but I see no need to upgrade for this unit at this time.

The Picture is lifted from Orbitcast.

sounds cool.. but here's the issues at hand.

in order for Sirius to capture the f'n myspace generation that is buying up Ipods left and right... they need to make a unit that is completely portable, with a good battery life, and can handle mp3s. if they don't do this anytime soon.. they are gonna completely miss this boat.

there is a huge market in mp3 players.. and if they could come up with one with any of their companies they work with... they would strike oil.

i spoke to Ross Zapin a month ago about this.. and he said in 3 months (i'm guessing 2 months or less now), that Sirius' new line of equipment was going to completely squash XM and put Sirius at a level that everyone has been visualizing for a long time.

guess we'll wait and see what happens!

I used to take the Victory bus from Sheman Oaks to Doheane & Santa Monica
every weekend when I was a kid living in Sheman oaks to go see bands @ The Troubador, I think it was called "RTD" back then.

The Sporster 4 is not the portable unit. It's simply an ugrade to the Sportster Replay. Urlocal is correct…the true portable unit is the currently taged S100. Rumor has it, that device will have much more memory than the current XM ones. I believe Inno has 2 GB of memory. Sirius needs to bump this to 15 GB to be truly completive with ipod in my opinion. I agree it also needs to have a long battery life if it’s going to be rechargeable. Sirius has kept a very tight lid on the S100 as they have with almost all new equipment as of late. It seems the old days of Sirius promise and never deliver are over since Mel took control. I think the S100 has a lot of promise but they shouldn’t release it until it works and works well in major cities…indoors and out. I believe they have learned from the XM mistakes and will do the best they can however some people will expect this thing to work everywhere and I don’t see how it will with the current technology.

I would expect the S100 to be priced in the mid to high $300’s though.

Just keep in mind a lot of what Orbitcast is reporting in this story is speculation. These blog sites can be a good source of info but they can also over speculate on issues. I’m not saying this info is wrong but be careful no to get your hopes built up too much only to find out a lot of the info is never realized.

urlocal I believe XM Inno and Helix are both advertised as 50 hours of recording. This is pretty much the same as the S50 so this means the XM devices should have no more than 2 GB of memory. It’s late and I reserve the right to be wrong about this.

Here is a possible…and I repeat possible picture of the new Sirius portable unit. It looks a lot like the Dell DJ to me though.

First I want to state this hasn’t come from any sources I consider valid so I’ll just consider it on my wish list. I would like to see the portable unit be video capable. Sirius plans to start broadcast (most children’s channels of video) in 1q 2007. I would love it if they would also broadcast NASCAR races in video and have the S100 capable of displaying this. Better yet have the S100 with some sort of video out capability for projection on a regular TV. Yes it would be a small display on the S100 but anything is better than nothing if you’re a NASCAR fan and the race is rain delayed until Monday.

I can not wait for a wearable unit. I just hope they can keep the price to $300 or under. Then I will be waiting in line to get one.

Looks awesome. Howard said today the "Portable" unit will be out soon and we will be able to listen via his website and the Sirius website within a month. YES! :)
