Migrating Birds Didn't Carry Flu

This birdflu scare is getting ridiculous...

At this point it's basically a ploy being used by the Bush Administration to give huge government handouts to drug companies.

BE AFRAID... GIVE TONS OF GOVERNMENT MONEY TO BIG DRUG COMPANIES.

"Worldwide, bird flu has killed about 200 humans, almost all of whom were in extremely close contact with sick birds."

Meanwhile... if you look up the statistics on the common flu...

"An estimated 100,000 hospitalizations and about 20,000 deaths occur each year from the flu or its complications."

The U.S. government has contracted with companies like North Carolina-based GlaxoSmithKline, which is getting $2.8 million to produce 84,300 treatment courses of the antiviral drug Relenza (zanamivir).

Chiron Corporation won a $62.5 million contract to supply the U.S. government with pre-pandemic influenza stockpiles against the H5N1 bird flu strain. That supply will be provided next year.

fear mongering = ^ profits...

How do these people get away with this shit?

don't blame just bush for this one,it's just as big a scare scam in canada, and every other country on earth.
the media fuels this shit, because it makes good news and creates good ratings to scare the shit out of people.
and you're right, big drugs love this idiocy, because it results in big $$$ from gov'ts.
not saying it couldn't happen, but if you want to do something about preventing deaths, lets put more money in cancer research,
increase food aid so 35000 kids don't starve to death every day.

Public health is an area where you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. If an influenza pandemic hits, everyone will complain that the gov't hasn't done enough. If it doesn't then everyone complains that we're spending too much money on it. The latter is the real reason TB is coming back, there was mumps outbreaks this year, etc.. Out of sight out of mind.
Ass Boil
From what I've read, the bird flu COULD be horrible if it did spread, because it could spread quickly. Whether or not it will happen remains to be seen...

I would rather see them over-prepare for something like that, than under-prepare...
Ironpirate
down the line on this one, i dont think it could be a widespread panic but you never know...

I'm not blaming Bush in particular... Just politicians and lobbyists in general...

The Fox News Article even says that stockpiling vaccines and anti viral drugs may be useless because if the virus does mutate into something that can jump from human to human at that point it's a whole different chemical structure.

So it would seem it's just an excuse to throw money at companies like Glaxo Smith Kline

I think I'm just a little over skeptical at times... but the track record this adminstration has warrants it.

IMHO you cant pin this one on Bush... it is an international thing... If it hits and Bush shows how ineffective he his thats another thing...

Another flawed analogy from Dipshit McGee. I hope you catch it first.

This IS going to happen sometime... prolly not today, likely not tommorow... but one day, people WILL start dropping dead from a pandemic.

I may not belive in God, but I do belive history will always repeat itself... ;)

I really shouldn't have to explain this to you, but your analogy is flawed because of the time and probability factors. Influenza epidemics occur at fairly regular intervals. Comets intersecting with Earth do not. More people were killed by influenza during WWI than in the war itself. All influenza pandemics are caused by genetic changes that occur in birds (or sometimes pigs). Right now there are H1N1 and H3N2 variants in circulation. The "bird flu" is the media's way of expressing the fact that the genetic changes to H(whatever) and N(whatever) normally occurs in birds. When that happens, there is no immunity in the public at large. It will happen. We just don't know when. I still hope you are the first to catch it.

Nearly ALL the pandemics are linked to birds in some way. It's the natural evolutionary pattern of the virus. It doesn't HAVE to occur that way, but it usually does. That said, I do think it's important to have a healthy skepticism about these things, but it really is only a matter of time before an influenza pandemic hits.

my great-grandfather has a street named after him in Habana as a result of his efforts as the physician in charge of quarantine of incoming vessels in 1916-1918.

true story.
