Do Sirius car antennas work better than the home kit antennas? - Click HERE to go to the original thread with graphics

I busted the antenna from my home kit. I dared to unplug it from my "plug and play" starmate and the wire came out the input coupling.

Im out looking for a new antenna. At the store I can get a low profile car antenna OR a whole new home kit set up for the same price. $40!

Why is that? Do the car antennas work better?
Chris Tucker
They work the same. You will get a better result from the home unit.
gribnack
as long as the antenna has a clear view of the sky then i dont see how one would be better than the other

Yeah, I have always gotten a better result from my home unit.

The car unit is nearly perfect though.

when i use my home antenna i had move it around alot on top of the roof of my house
with the car antenna i leave it inside the house and get great reception, so i would say the car antenna is better , for me personally
szwolf34601
I put my extra car antenna on my roof and the signal is full strength all the time.

At work I have a home kit set up. The signal dies out like at 10 and 2:00. Plus I had to invent this crazy extendo arm to move it out away from the window sill for better reception. The car antenna is lighter and smaller, so I would be able to manuver it to a better spot.

try it timmy on monday at work , i bet it's going to work better, (the car antenna)
Timmy
Well first Ill see if I can fix my antenna. Nurse hand me my scaple!!
BobboTheGreat
Good question, will try the car antenna tomorrow

I like the car antennas ..
I use the low profile car antenna with my starmate in the house, never bought a home kit

works like a charm , gets better reception inside than my sporster boombox does with the antenna in the same location

For MY money, low profile car antenna and a radio shack 12v adapter = home kit

the only thing that sucks is that the car antenna dos'nt fit into my sporster boombox, i use it on my s-50 home kit

according to my bro (audio engineer) the car antenna is OMNI-directional and the home antenna is uni-directional which means you have to point it in the CORRECT direction to get a good strong signal.

use this link to see where the Satellites are. and where to point your anntena relative to where you live.

If you don't have a window facing the right direction you may need a roof antenna

you can use ANY antenna, just use them correctly.

this thread should be in the Sirius forum

just sayin' :hw:

I would have to see some tech specs to know for sure.

As far as anyone knows it's the exact same patch antenna in a different housing, although the newer mobile antennas are quite small so it wouldn't be true for them.

Excellent question.

BTW, I have my mobile antenna inside dead center of the dash, right up where the dashboard and windshield meet and it's great there. I have an '05 Elantra GT.

I rarely have drop outs in the car but at home, with the extended antenna all the way up on my house I still get bad reception all the time so in my opinion, the car antena is waaaaaaay better.

I have to agree. If you have the antenna on the roof and face it in the right direction, shouldn't it work? The car kit always works.
georgebob
I find that the car antenna works the best.
xtxguyx
i use the car antenna for my home unit and it works great.

ive never had a problem getting a good signal

No shit brainiac! Heres the problem. Some of us work in large buildings, commonly called "office buildings". Unfortunatly we dont all have spiderman like powers that enable us to scale building walls and place the antenna on top o the building. Another problem, I cant seem to get the building to spin on its axis so that my window faces in the optimal Sirius direction. Futhermore my evil boss will not let me lay down 100 ft of antenna wire clear across thebuilding o the other side, where I can then punch a hole in the wall and stick the antenna outside. What a nazi!!! Not like those Sirus bastards make a 100ft antenna.!!!

You could put two 50 foot Terk extension cables together along with the regular antenna would give you 120 feet or so. You'd still need to punch a hole in the wall and silence your boss.

i have my car kit (antenna) professionally installed on my SUV. I bought another car kit for my work van and when done with work i take it home and place my car antenna outside of my window. works fine, no need for the home kit.

+ i purchased an AC to DC adapter at walmart for about $9.99 to hook up my car charger to the wall outlet
Cap420
I always get much better reception with my home antenna.

Maybe because its bigger and wider?
