Satellite Standard Group wrote up a description of the upcoming SIRIUS Wearable unit from today's Annual Meeting. These pretty much confirm what I was told by sources familiar with the project - the unit is wider than the S50, black face, white trim, and has a knob on the front. The S50 has an incredible form-factor, and it sounds like Sirius will follow suit with this next unit.
In addition, I'm hearing more things about the battery life - which quite possibly would be the "killer" aspect talked about by insiders when comparing this new unit against the Pioneer Inno. Word has it (and this is still very speculation-ish), battery life will be 25 hours, with an optional additional 25 hour battery pack - with a total of 50 hours of playback time. How? I have no clue.
And on the heals of Mel unveiling the device (he held it up in his hand), MasterLink Securities has indicated that the manufacturer for this unit will in fact be Wistron NeWeb (with Directed Electronics being the distributor). Here's an excerpt from the report (or get the full PDF report)
Sirius currently has 3 suppliers for its antenna and receiving terminals/modules, WNC, Kiryung (004790 KS, 5170KW, NR), and Humax (028080 KS, 24950KW, NR), with each produces different models respectively. WNC is now producing 5-6 existing models for radio reception, approximately 60~65% of the Sirius’ shipment, mostly in-house or in-car (after market).
Portable receiving devices are expected to start delivery in 2H06, with MP3 function-enabled, which is not only MP3 on-the-go, but portable radio as well (imagine an iPod with radio channels available!) We believe this new portable device will add excitement to WNC’s satellite radio business, as PMP (Portable Multimedia Player) is of growing consumer interest in the next few years.
Very interesting. As I understand it, Kiryung makes the Starmate Replay, Sportster; Humax makes the S50; and Wistron NeWeb made the original Starmate, Xacts, Kenwood, and Streamer Lite units.

| 25 hours on a single charge? Maybe on the lowest volume setting that nobody is ever going to use. Either that or the thing is going to be as heavy as lead. I'm going to guess typical battery life will be more like 6 to 10--with 6 more likely. |

| Yeah, but imagine 50 hours of battery life! One can only dream. |

I just hope that they will not inhibit the recording of the shows. i.e. limiting the length of time you could record a Sirius broadcast being transmitted to the device. or not have a TiVo like capability.
I can imagine that the RIAA and talent lawyers will force them to restrict that ability in one form or another. |

iPods do have radios channels available via little plug in devices that cost around $15 for am/fm.
The article should note that it's going to be like an ipod with satellite radio channels available. |

Since the new $400 XM device is portable and can hold 50 hours, the new Sirius will be more expensive since it sounds way better. Maybe $500? |
|
|
| slayerized |
| my question is will you be able to go anywere and get reception? like in a building or something? or is the signal going to be shitty like it is now? |
|
|
| Faygo |
| The new XM device can't do that, so I'm guessing the new Sirius device won't be able to either. |

im just afraid that im going to shell out a boat load of money and then not be as satified as i am now. :(
unless others get it and totally convince me to buy it i think im going to wait until they get a solid system of repeaters like f'ed up radio so i can go in to the store or sit on the shitter and not miss anything... |

| The unit is the Xact ReGo (XTR5). Do your research. It's a load of bull if you ask me. Once you add up all the costs it's just not worth it. You gotta figure it out to be about $500 with everything essential (mem card, headphones/antenna). Tell me what you think cos not a lot of ppl seem to know about this unit... |

The Rego is old news and has nothing to do with the unit coming out in a few months. |

You're completely wrong, not even close. The ReGo was shelved because of reception problems. The "live" portable coming out this summer is not by Xact, it's by Directed Electronics and it's based on the S50 receiver. Directed already talked about it at their Q1 conference call. It's coming out this summer. The ReGo is history, we'll never see it, old technology. Expect an S50-like live portable this summer, made by Directed, Inc.(they make the Sporster and Starmate Replay) |

I hope the new unit comes with both car and HOME docking units included for the same price! That's assuming you will need a docking unit at all!

Yeah, I agree with you on this. But there's a lot of confusion in the media about the ZING. At first they said it wasn't the same, then other sources said that it might be the same device, i.e. the receiver would have a built-in satellite tuner PLUS the ZING WiFI receiver for indoor reception. In the end, no one really seems to know whether 1 or 2 live portables are coming out this year. SIRIUS is keeping this very secret, so the info is very sketchy. We'll just have to wait and see if it's the same as the ZING unit. I think a WiFI-only ZING would be a bit premature since WiFI/Bluetooth coverage is still in its early stages of deployment in most cities. |

I read that the Zing Will use wi-fi and G3 broadband networks. Since most local wi-fi hot spots require you to subscribe to their service and there are dozens of them, G3 may be the way to go. This allows you to use your laptop almost anywhere, but you have to pay $30 - $50 a month to subscribe nationwide. |

| Any guesses how much this thing will cost? The s50 is $199 now and this is due to come out in July? They better really knock down the price of the s50 just to blow them out, because once this new doo hocker come out the s50 is dead. My Guess would be like $300 to $350 |

| that picture of the supposed s100 is an s50. look at the bottom of it. it has pins in it for the docking station. if you look in the forums of siriusbackstage.com it has stuff about the zing player, and has a photo too. im guessing though that the picture of the zing player will not be what the new live portable looks like. im guessing that the new live portable will not have the zing technology included. ive heard from rumors that the zing technology will not make its way into sirius hardware until at least 2007. |
