May 24, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption.
"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage. And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.
Before sounding off on the benefits of a lower speed limit, Clinton called for a combination of tax incentives, the use of more ethanol-based fuel and a $50 billion fund for new energy research to cut the consumption of foreign oil 50 percent by 2025.
She also pushed for half of all the nation's gas stations to have ethanol pumps by 2015, and for every gas station to have them by 2025.

| so even if they do implement it..no ones going to slow down their driving...when they see the 65mph sign usually everyone is already doin at least 80..maybe if they did drop the speed limit to 55, maybe people would slow down to like 70 |

And we should have a law that says we can't exercise. We'll save food and calories that way.

I am an American, never missed a vote since I'm 18 and I'm a Libertarian so I believe everyone has a choice in life and there should be less govt. regulation of anything. BTW, WHERE IS THE GAS SHORTAGE??? Prices went up because of FEARS of a shortage but there was NO actual shortage!
No gas lines.
No flights curtained due to lack of fuel.
No trucks parked at depots because of lack of fuel.
No rationing instituted because of lack of fuel.

What a joke The whole reason people go OVER 55 mph is because they are COMMUTING to work and need to get there in a reasonable time. whats next no more well done steaks at restaurants to conserve energy? or we could mandate that all thermostats in america cannot go below 80 like they do in Japan.

not in favour of or against a 55mph speed limit but if people need to get to work in a reasonable amount of time could they maybe just leave a little earlier instead of speeding?

Speed laws in areas such as mine, are only in place to justify local police deptments... Our local police are in place to shake down and harass the same taxpayers that provide their paychecks...

It is also our choice to limit people like you because we don't want to be killed by you. There was no speed limit in WY for a long time. Then the Vette club of America started having their anual meeting there and there was mayham on the roads.
