Sen. McCain introduced a bill calling for "a la carte" cable choice for consumers.
Although the FCC, Parents Television Council, and other Religious Right organizations have been calling for this for a year, I think it will bite them in the ass if it becomes law.
Religious channels will basically become obsolete from no subscriptions and channels like FX, Comedy Central, and E will probably seek out edgier programming to appeal to new subscribers.
Plus, although the pro-censorship crowd says that they will not seek FCC indecency regulation for cable if consumers are given channel choice, I bet that within two years of this becoming law, they will be screaming for cable regulation. Their argument will probably be based on the fear that children are going to their friend's house where the parents subscribe to the "dirty channels" like MTV. Even though their argument is weak for regulation right now, after cable choice becomes an option, their argument for regulation will be worthless. |

This is just a foot in the door for government regulation of cable. And the religous channels would not be obsolete. More people watch that stuff than you think. Plus, the GOP would likely pass a bill that would fund programs that lose x-amount of subscribers to prevent that from happening.
God TV is here to stay.. |

| I would actually love the option of doing this, but there is no way it would save anyone any money. The channels everyone wants would just cost more to make up for the channels not that many want, but they want to offer... But to me it would be worth it because I only watch maybe 10-15 of the 100+ channels I get... It just so happens I can't get those channels without paying for the second most expensive package they offer.... what a coincidence. |

Whoa...I actually agree with you on this AB...(there is hope for you yet) I might also mention that the price of this mandate will be passed on to consumers raising the price even more. Cable companies will, or will claim to require to, develop new technology to make this functional..adding to the cost. However, pretty soon phone companies will be offering TV service via fiber optic lines. From what I understand, at least with Bell South or ATT will have the ability to offer a la cart service through its lines. The more competition, the better.
THis will have an impact on more than just religious channels though. Lots of seldom watched cable stations would go under if this type of service becomes popular. |

Just load the channels you like to watch on the favorites section of the remote.
As Howard says, "If you don't like it, then don't watch it." |

| I refuse to do that. I feel like the least I can do is look at all the wasted channels I pay for.... as a reminder. |
