| I'm kind of on both sides here. One side the news sucks and it would free up cash for other good programing. On the other side they haven't been givin free reign on what they can talk about. Resulting in the news to mostly stuff like, "Is it normal to never poop stories. |

Now that they changed formats, I don't even hear the news. Lisa G will come in and say what's coming up and then I never hear it but I listen to the entire show. It must play during the commercials when I go to grab something to eat or whatever.
They won't cut psycho Penny. She makes good breakdown material. She starts crying and blaiming people but her ego is very annoying. They have to keep her around to keep making fun of her.
Lisa G will stay because of her delicous treats and how everyone finds her hot.
Shuli, I actually thought he was part of the staff like JD, I really had no idea he was part of the news team.
George will stay because he's the sane one of the bunch.
They should just make Penny a whack pack news woman. Like that's her specialty in the whack pack but they keep her because she's a basket case.
It's sad some people got fired but I don't believe they'll cover this story. They don't cover any major stories that they should. It's like Howard hired a news team to talk about him but then he told them to leave him alone and report on other things and people.
Which leads to the point of the news?
??? |

Now that Howard can play his CBS shows for the next 10 years, I believe there will be major programming changes...scaled down news...perhaps that third channel they have been talking about with those old shows on..(Classic Howard Stern) and of course...now we will begin to see Crack Whore View! I have been pulling my pud to that news for 5 months now!

| I never liked the news. There's no need for it with the constant replays anyway. Those three people couldn't have been making much money. I wonder if it was really "budgetary." I think they either need to make it a real news team (real stories not just Howard) or get rid of it. With 2 channels devoted to Howard and a 3rd coming, I don't see what purpose they serve. |

I think the news was a pretty fun gimmick leading up to the 1/9/06 launch and a little while after.
I never thought it would stick
I think it has run it's coarse.
once the show started in January I never listened to any of the newscasts ..I found them to be kind of boring.

If she gets fired she will be hanging from a ceiling fan that night.

| It was obvious they would be cutting staff after the hour-long newscasts were dropped. The next step should be dropping the teases in the morning. They bring the show to a screeching halt. A tease provides value only if it's something to look forward to. High Pitch Eric not paying another catering bill or bar tab is not something I want to hear news of. |

The news Failed and it is Howard and Tim's fault. With the greater portion going to Howard.
They were to have freedom to report on whatever they wanted without fear of backlash from Howard. The first time the exercise that freedom Howard blows a gasket, and it turns into a " who farted at the water cooler" show. They have not been allowed to report on anything relevant to the show and it's not their fault.
With that said, a staff of 17 to now report on "All things Howard" is crazy. I would be surprised to see that number be cut to about 5. |

I think the news served a purpose. perhaps it's purpose has already been served, but I think there are still events that need to be covered. i.e. Artie's Beer League Premier. I also thought they would be doing a weekend news magazine. I think there are places for the news. I agree with others that they weren't given the free reign that we expected they would get. There were definitely stories you would have expected to hear covered more---I mean, the day Howard held his press conference to announce he was being sued should have been live on H100. There are legal issues that Howard has to deal with, but that shouldn't effect a news organization, that is separate from Howard Stern the person, and Howard Stern the Radio show.
Whatever. I hope they figure it out. It was a good idea, and the day I heard the news come on, purely by accident, when Wendy the Retard was coming to town for her 24 hour marathon was a funny and memorable day. |

| I think the news should have had it's own website, where you can either read or download stories. The howardstern.com site is good, but if the news had another layer to it it would probably be a bit more appealing. If they're going to do investigations and such it would be good to have a site with pics to match the story. I personally feel that Howard probably had big plans for the news when he was developing the idea over at K-ROK, but has been so busy with everything else he hasn't been able to find the time to work on it. The news was probably going to play a bigger part, but has gotten lost under the weight of the show + the wrap up show + howard tv, etc. What do you guys think? |

When I heard Shuli doing a news piece on his cousins trying to find money in their house on Passover, I knew the news was on its way out.
I say put the news team to work doing celebrity interviews or covering events like Stuttering John used to do (before all the crap happened). This crew will have way more clout and probably won't get thier credentials revoked minutes before the events.
The Celebrity interviews will regain their element of suprise, at least for a little while. Then Howard can fire them. (kidding, i hate to see anyone lose their job) At least they can add to the show, because I agree, the news blows. |

I'm glad to see the news dying. I liked a few of the staff, Shuli is great, George is great as the resident "straight arrow". Penny Crone is boring as hell, and Lisa G was a little hottie and made a good effort but she always came off as a little desperate to me. I was enjoying the new format more, just because it was less intrusive, used to drive me nut when I was looking forward to a little "replay" action on the drive home after a long shift and got stuck with the news.
Anyway, peace out and thanks for the great forum.

That's not a bad point. Integrate them into the show. And I wouldn't mind so much that they interrupt the show everyday for the headlines if they were contributing...as in, instead of giving us headlines of what's going to happen for the day, and then there's something Howard finds interesting and wants to know more, they usually say "well, you'll have to listen to find out". Fuck you, tell me now, I'm sitting here listening...there's no guarantee I'm going to be here later, spill the story now goddammit....

I'm sorry to see any of them lose their jobs but a 17 person news organization has never made any sense to me. The budget should be spent on additional show projects/show talent and not on a news organization.

| What the Howard 100 News Team should be is a couple of comics that do a 5 minute update every hour in an SNL format. So they can rip on news stories of the day. That way, we'll actually get updates on real news but it'll also make us laugh. We know we cant depend on Robin's news for it. |

| NedKoppel |
Face it, the H100 news was conceived to manage the awkward problem of providing content for the stations while the key players were contractually obligated to stay off the air. Howard initially took a "hands-off" approach to the division, but I think the discussion that occurred when the news team got Sal busted, in which Liz Aiello commented that the rules are constantly changing, sort of said it all. There's really no use for the team with its current editorial mission, which forces it to create enterprise stories much of the time because any "news" actually generated from the show might get someone hurt.
I say the Howard 100 News concept could have been cool if they'd allowed them to pull stuff off the wires, too. Not all Howard listeners chafe at real news and current events. They took society page news and tried to make it look like Harry Reasoner. There's nothing good or lasting that's going to come out of that.
With the H100 News, it's clearly a case of shit or get off the pot. It's either news or it isn't. If it isn't, best to take it out back and put it out of its misery. |

This is really sad for them, I feel terrible for those that have lost their jobs. I have spoken to a few of the news team and they are all super professional and seem like kind people as well. There is no way an intern could do their job, the interns in my opinion totally fuck up the just the callers they handle on the specials so they could not replace the kind of pros they hired for the news. I guess Mel likes the cost of the interns= 0.
The real problem with The News format is the extreme cost. Any news is very labor intensive and that will make it the most expensive item on the list by far. The can't just crank out material as it has to be prepped first, compared to say Riley Martin who gives alot of material and it costs Sirius $400 an hour, total (including Koop DiKoop). The Mel Karmazin effect is starting to seep into Sirius and The Channels. Howard will feel really bad about this but unfortunately the one super bumber about having your own channels is the staffing decisions, that is so personal and emotional. |

I am not sure you can call any of what they report "news" anyway. What a waste of time - thank God for fast forward on the S50. They are only good when Howard talks to them during the show. They had how many reporters? 7 or 8? For what?
They won't report the real news: Stuff like where is Howard vacationing this week? How much did Howard pay for his tapes? How much has Howard offered to settle the CBS lawsuit? (oh right, Howard will never pay them a dime, puleeaaze).

It would seem that I'm in the minority here. I really enjoy The Howard 100 News Team and the news stories in general. The concept of Howard having a news team to cover Howard Stern News still kills me.

I'm not blaming them entirely. Though Howard said they would have free reign and be able to report on anything, it was obvious that wasn't the case. They were more of a Howard infomercial than a news broadcast.
I think the whole concept was fucked up from the beginning. It should have been presented as a goof (an obvious goof) and not meant to be serious in any way. Howard tried to present them as legitimate, uncensored and free to report on anything they wanted. It should have been something more along the lines of the old Weekend Updates on SNL (if anything at all).
Nice try. Back to the drawing board.
As for looking good on their resumes, I doubt it. Any serious news group may hold working for Howard against them. And what they did, didn't really translate as a quality news broadcast. |
Couldn't agree more. The size of that team is overkill considering the depth of their investigations (or lack thereof). I'm suprised it took this long. |

The Howard 100 News concept pretty much jumped the shark on January 9th, 2006. The topics relevant to the daily shows are fully covered during the show itself, to the point where the "news team" is left to call the chick who was acting like the Human Resources Rep in the Sal gag. Overkill is a kind way to describe the role they played on the network.
It is funny to see that budgetary reasons were why the news team was cut when they are paying the host 500 mill. In the future when prople get canned because of money they should call it "Howardary Reasons." It would be interesting to know how the Stern Show staff is paid. I wonder who would get canned from the show if cut-backs became necessary. |

It seems like every time Howard goes on vacation something happens and/or somebody publishes a hit piece on him. |

These two could be related. Sirius management wants to get to profitability soon, so they may take the approach, "keep the cost at the exact same level, no new expenses." The third channel comes on due to the tapes so whatever outlay they have to put out for the new channel, they cut costs elsewhere so the expenses remain the same. The new tapes are a gold mine since there is now a hell of alot new, "instant" material that is "pay CBS as you go", nothing paid upfront to anyone. Howard should ask for a 5 cent royalty for each minute of tape played. |

weeks ago I wrote to george and congratulated him on the News staff doing a bang-up job. If any of you numb-nuts actually Listen, you can see the subtle way they report certain items.
it's quite funny and entertaining.
I also suggested a story they should follow and they have been doing reports on this topic. ANd I LOVE it.
maybe, if more of you stopped yer whining and came up with things you actually Wanted to hear about and said so to the news team, you would enjoy it more.

| I enjoyed the news but always thought that a hour was too long...30 minutes a couple of times a day was fine. |

That's a good idea but unfortunately since there is no longer a scheduled news segment I doubt that I would actually get to hear it. |
