I love the weasel words:
"Out of an abundance of caution, however, VA is taking all possible steps to protect and inform our veterans."
Yeah, after the news got out to the public...
"We apologize for any inconvenience or concern this situation may cause, but we at VA believe it is important for you to be fully informed of any potential risk resulting from this incident..."
So we can cover our bureaucratic asses... |

|

And didn't it turn out to affect ALOT more people than they first admitted?
I am sorry you have to deal with that Max.
Make sure you sign up for one of those credit watch services... |

That's more of a case of getting in to see them, nowadays, the care you get at a VA facility is a cut above Kaiser, at the very least. |

Yeah, they were hoping that it would go away quick and quiet, and instead they have to face the music - some office guy got canned, some honcho will probably get a bonus.
I'm already covered ID theft wise, it's the principal of the thing. They failed in their responsibility, and tried to cover it up - yeah, like it's breaking news. |

My bank thought they lost mortgage data tapes that included account info. they later found out they had been misplaced but still gave out a free one year credit monitoring service from Trans Union.
WTF are they doing for you besides saying I'm sorry? |

They wish you luck, and point you in any direction away from themselves. |

Max, I'm surprised that you would suggest that any gov't official would ever engage in a cover up to save their asses.
You sound like a conspiracy theorist. It was a simple mistake, deal with it. Much like the intelligence failures before, during and after 9/11, just simple incompetence, no cover up, no conspiracy, everything above board, as always. |

Covering up a mistake is what happened wrt your favorite subject. The FBI sat on it's collective ass, and didn't stop the hijackers.
End of story.
Sorry it isn't as exciting as The Wild Wild West, but real life seldom is. |

But why didn't they stop the hijackers? They want to see Americans die?
I think FBI Special Agaent Colleen Rowley tried everything to get these people to listen to her, but whistleblowers such as she were silenced. Why? |

There is a standard truth about Law Enforcement Agencies that civilians are rarely if ever aware of.
From the F.B.I all the way down to Bugtussle P.D., in every department, everywhere, there are go-getters that want to bust every lawbreaker on the face of the planet, from litterbugs to murderers, it makes no difference. They’re the hard chargers that go out every day 110%.
Then you have the great majority of officers who view the job as a job, put in their hours, bust this one and that one, and do the best job they can within the confines of an 8 hour shift.
Finally, you have a few guys that don't want to work very hard, and avoid doing anything too strenuous.
In the case f the F.B.I., you have these three categories, plus a layer of bureaucrats that think like managers - not like LEO's - and many of them are more interested in furthering their careers than going at the job 110.
In the case of the 9/11 attacks, bureaucratic laziness won out over the 110%'ers. |

honestly in this day and age... this is just a reality of living in an electronic society.
who knows how many other breaches have taken place with your data that were never disclosed? |

| Yeah, I got mine. I just hope that bastard is being charged with a crime and not collecting his check while he sits his ass at home. |

Someone on another board attributed this to some understaffed department that was being forced to do 3x the work with 1/3 the staff... and the guy was having to work from home on his time.
Who knows. |

Here is how I interpreted the letter:
We screwed up and gave away your confidential information. We're currently working to ensure this never happens again. Now that thieves have your name, social security number and date of birth, they could possibly use this information for illegal means. YOU should be extra vigilant in monitoring your financial records for suspicious activites.
So, THEY screw up and all THEY have to do is mail me a letter. Meanwhile, I've got to worry about identity theft and the extra cost of credit monitoring. Something about this whole fiasco seems totally unfair.
Edit: I guess I spoke too soon. After going to the firstgov website, I learned that we will have free credit monitoring compliments of the government.
VA anticipates having free credit monitoring available to those eligible by mid-August. |
