Isn't designating certain words as offensive and inappropriate actually just strengthening their power?
Shouldn't we be more concerned with having people build better ego defenses so they aren't shattered if someone slurs them? |

| I know that SFNers aren't the most PC people on the planet (which is why I come here), so I may be preaching to the choir. But, does anyone have an argument in favor of limiting "hate" speech. |

A point that Allan may be hinting at is that the same type of "hate speech" laws that already exist in most of Europe, Australia and Canada are likely to end up on our door step eventually. It will be interesting to see "who" will support it. Notice that while the religous right gets the slack for bringing about the FCC fines and such, that a rather disturbing number of Democrats support those measures. Remember that during the 2004 Presidential Campaign that Kerry supported those fines. He may have been doing that simply to try to win some of the religious nutjob votes, or the Dems may have something more sinister up their sleves. |

Don't expect the gov't to be your spine, if you want to call a black man a nigger then be a man and do it, and enjoy your hospital stay.

| So when I got called a honky mother fucker by a black guy, should that be considered hate speech or am I not allowed to be offended because I am white? Either way I thought it was hilarious. I hadn't heard the term honky in a long time. |

Words by themselves are harmless, but speech can be hateful. Verbal abuse can cause long term phychological damage.
Racial slurs can be used as a means of verbal abuse. I don't think it should be treated any different than other forms of verbal abuse.
It's much easier to regulate words than it is to regulate actions. The regulation of action often requires judgement, and judgement is typically biased. However, if I'm going to get in your face and tell you you're a piece of shit, am I commiting a more heinous moral crime by telling you you're a nigger piece of shit?
In short...I agree |
