Exactly. During the '80s, the Tribune Co. made the Cubs "cool." Between Harry Carey and Wrigley Field, the Cubs became "cool," regardless of their performance. For many Cub fans, losing was acceptable because the "everyone is a Cubs fan" mantra that was spewed by the Trib. As long as Wrigley exists, they will continue to market the shit out of it. As long as the Cubs play in Wrigley Field, the lemmings will come out. You have to admire a company that has made losing acceptable.
Well, as they say, "the times are a-changing." Losing is no longer acceptable in Chicago. Winning matters. It won't happen overnight, but the Cubs are shedding their "lovable losers" tag because losing is no longer lovable. |
