The Lebanese and PI elections were crap, Hizbollah and HAMAS won their respective elections primarily through fear, deception, and subterfuge... hmmm... kinda sounds like 2004 in the U.S. in a different manner

you know I dont know about this. Ive heard the same things said about Hitler... with little objective information to back that up. do we have any evidence that these election victories were obtained by fraudulent means? I mean is it really unebeliveable that Shiite Lebanon would vote Hezbollah into power? Is it really so unbelievable that the Palestinians would vote Hamas, an institution with widespread support, into power? |

After Arafat was gone, I was not surpised by anything that happened within the PA. Both the PA and Lebanon are merely puppet states of Syria and Iran, the elections going that way under the atmosphere of that timeframe is no different from Kim Chong-il getting "elected" again as the head of the KWP or any ;)
Diebold couldn't even help their opponents win elections... |

First of all, Hezbollah's political party has enough seats to veto legislation. They are not the party in power. Secondly, its amazing how everything is judged during what seems to be bad times, and only a year or 3 into the process. Hamas was elected to head the Palestinians, and they were failing miserably. They started the conflict with the Israeli's to regain lost support, and head off a pending referendum initiated by the Prime Minister. Hamas will either be destroyed by Israel, and Fatah will regain power, thereby re-igniting the 2 state process, or Hamas will survive and continue their failed governance, and be voted out.
Unfortunately, the desired results don't come about in a few short years. The disease too many Americans suffer from is the disease of immediate gratification. Its just too easy for the weak minded haters like Willow to try and take cheap shots. They don't have any idea what needs done, they expect immediate results, and offer nothing positive to the debate.
So much for your plan...ohh wait, you don't have one. |

Where did I lie? You said it will take 20 - 30 years for your "plan" to work. So far the only part of your plan we can judge is the invading a country that had NO ties to al qaeda, now all we have left is the wait 20-30 years part.
So come talk to us then.... |

Wrong. The last Lebanese election was certified by the UN, something we have yet to accomplish.
I think you have very little grasp of the situation, so a little illumination for you.
Hezbollah is 250,000 strong and boasts many veteran fighters. It's funded by Iran to the tune of 100 million dollars a year. Lebanon, on the other hand, just emerged from a decades long civil war. It's army is a 70,000 man force which handles mostly police duties and an engineer corps (which Israel attacked last week).
It's sad that Lebanese politicians (Rafik Harriri) were much smarter than you. Instead of plunging Lebanon into yet another civil war which the government would most likely lose, they chose instead to begin integrating Hezbollah into the government. The plan was that over time, the groups affiliations would shift from a militia to civilian or military forces under the direct control of the Lebanese gov't. To a small extent, it did work. Whereas before Hezbollah carried out frequent attacks against Israelis, since they carried a few seats in Parliament, they curbed their agression noticeably.
Res. 1559 was unenforceable for the Lebanese without plunging the country right back into the chasm it came out of. In a way, it was made to fail, and I'll tell you why.
Israel's goals in the region are simple: destroy all the threats. Iran, Iraq, and Syria are the threats. How to get rid of them without large Israeli cost? Let the US do it.
Iraq happened, now it's time for the other 2. Through Hezbollah's attack, Israel had the right to fight back, which it has been, and so much more. Their destruction of mostly civilian targets and very few Hezbollah deaths just raised the stakes to where a cease fire would simply never happen without a foreign force to keep peace in the south of Leb. France and Turkey have already been tappped. With Hezbollah armed and Nato forces in the area, a clash is bound to happen, which hopefully will bring in the US. It should also be noted that Israel is NOT innocent of any provocation. Before the Israeli troops were captured, Israel shelled a Gaza beach and abducted Pal civilians, killing some of their families.
Iran has a dog in it too. Remember what was going on in the UN before this mess? Iran was up for vote in the Security Council for sanctions on it's nuclear program and it was to be a big part of the G8 discussion. Not anymore. Way to deflect, Iran!
Get out of the dark corner you call home, and stop speaking in simple terms and generalities, because by doing that, your words mean nothing. |

Putting NATO forces on the ground gives Hezbollah the targets they desire- especially if Bush puts the MEU on the ground (which is on the table still- with follow on forces), we can guarantee with nearly 100% certainty that Hezbollah will in some way attack NATO forces.
Israel wishes NATO forces over the useless and ineffective UN forces because UN forces will not engage- NATO troops will not only fire back to defend, but offensively destroy targets of opportunity in a defensive mode.
I know Abba and I disagree on this to some extent- my opinion is that Hezbollah guerilla fighters are a militia, which means they are civilian and militant so some deaths which appear to be civilian, may be in fact militant. I too have seen the bombed out ambulance convoys and I also know that Hezbollah will use ambulances to transport arms, just like they use Mosques to store arms, or schools to launch rockets or apartment buildings as command and control facilities. When they do this, they subject the civilian population to the retaliation of the Israel military.
There can be no cease fire- Hezbollah will only use this time to rearm and redeploy- there are no cease fires in the Arab world.
Rice PISSED me the hell off last night- grinning like a child with her sunglasses on her head like some Disneyland tourist. |

Agree with the Condoleeeeeza comments.
I think at this point they're just paying lip service to everyone except Israel. Once the fighting dies down and international aid comes in for Lebanon, we'll see if that fuckin grin's still there.
2 billion dollars worth of damage, and reported this morning that a 50 km oil spill is destroying the coastline from beirut and heading south. Good job shooting yourselves in the foot, Israel.
Another dimension of this conflict- Tourism.
Since Lebanon's rennaisance, it has once again been propelled into a fabulous tourist destination. Indeed, much of Beirut's reconstruction has been fueled by tourist dollars and euros. Tourism is an important Israeli industry which as of late has been suffering due to it's neighbor in the north.
Watch the tourists after this is over. |

Rice tipped her hand with the grinning and sunglasses and bull shit comments...
War and terrorist attacks seem to kill tourism nicely. I would rather see this conflict get done and over with here and now- lets settle this for the long term (50 to 100 years) and be damned the collateral damage.
AB / Abba- Rice really set an image of the administration- our pace at getting there- the nonchalant cavalier attitude- the informal attire and sunglasses- what is next, flip flops and Bermuda shorts- it is hot there you know... |
