830,545 new subscribers came to SIRIUS in 2006's 2nd quarter but there were 230,111 deactivations. What does this mean?
Marc Gerstein, Director of investment research writes for Rueters:
Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. <SIRI.O> reminded Wall Street this week just how much of a subscriber-growth machine shock-jock Howard Stern's new home really is. In contrast to XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. <XMSR.O>, which tempered growth expectations last week, Sirius raised the bar, saying it expects its customer count to grow to 6.3 million by year-end, a shade higher than its previous 6.2 million target and up from nearly 4.4 million on June 30. While investors will undoubtedly monitor progress here carefully, another less-discussed metric also bears watching: deactivations.

| Well, deactivations are people that cancel. Obviously not Howard Stern fans. I could see how some could get frustrated with the spotty reception or don't like the equipment. I wonder how much of it is due to cars transferring ownership or getting wrecked. If someone has a car unit and the car gets wrecked, then that unit probably gets deactivated and a new one installed in their new car. With activations running nearly 4 times the number of deactivations, Sirius doesn't look to be in any trouble here. |

i think hardware has got something to do w/ the high number of deacts.
there is much bitchin' (ou there) regarding the crappiness of specific sirius receivers.
love to see a break down by model type, in-car vs. portable, etc. |

| Churn less than 2% is a great number. Check out the satellite TV and cell phone carriers. |

Hardware is a big issue. They need to make this stuff so easy anyone can install it and use it. It is not yet at that point. If they would make a unit that is so simple it would be a lot better. I bought my mom a unit and she would have never gone out to get one. Once she has it and it’s all set up she loves it. But she is the type that would never go out and get one because it all sounds and seems too hard. Once they get over that they will get way more people to sign up.
I think the market to tap is older people not the young. They need to spend money on getting old people to sign up. But to do this they need to make it so simple they can. Once word got out how easy it is they love it. I liken it to Tivo; no matter how much you explain how awesome Tivo is no one cares till they see it. |

Can you cancel your SFN account too. I am sick of looking at the gay avatar. |

| Good article. I didn't really care too much about the NFL, but now that Reggie Bush is with New Orleans, I can listen to his games. Cool little benefit of owning Sirius. I can also listen to Matt Leinart's progress with Arizona. Nooice. |

| A lotta folks found out that the old Audiovox receivers could not be deactivated via transmissions. So, they'd deactivate their memberships, and enjoy life-time-free Sirius. |
