NO WAY at the $399 price!

Here's 2 BIG reasons:
1. Internet streaming
2. Three replays a day

SIRIUS would have sold millions if they released the Stiletto before the replays and streaming started!!! They shot themselves in the foot with the VERY delayed release of this device.

I listen at home. And at work. The only time I'm without the show is on my 1-hour ride on the bus to work. And I can catch that missing 1-hour at least 3 times on replay.

Get the S50 and record the entire show. I do that and then listen at the gym at the end of the day. I hear more of the show now than I ever did.

I wonder what the fucking headphones/antenna look like. The sound of that turns me off right away.

The receiver has a built-in antenna(that's the hump you see on the left-hand side of the picture). The problem is that satellite signals are very weak and because of their high-frequency they don't penetrate objects very well, including your body. In fact, one of the biggest problems with all satellite portables is that when your body is between the source of the satellite signal and the receiver, you lose reception. That's the reason for the backup headphones/antenna combo. It's for when the receiver's built-in antenna can't get reception because your body is in the way of the signal. In the end, all portable satellite receivers will have reception problems at some point or another, especially inside buildings. It's a limitation that's unavoidable cause you're receiving a signal from 22,000 miles away, unless there's a terrestial repeater nearby. It doesn't work like an FM walkman radio and never will. Anyone who expects to get 100% reception everywhere they go is going to be very disappointed with any sat. portable receiver.

Some people do listen to the music channels, you know.

My biggest problem is the battery life. The extended battery apparently only offers 4 hours of satellite reception, which is just not enough. 6-10 hours would be good, 12-16 hours (like an ipod) would be ideal.

My MP3 player (iAudio X5L) has a 35 hour battery. The stiletto pales in comparison. I'll just record manually to mp3 and stick them on my X5 for the time being.

Check out my thread HERE,
I just updated it with all the new SIRIUS products that will be coming out this fall.

MP3 players are very simple devices compared to satellite receivers. They're simple memory chips with a DAC(Digital to Analog Converter) and small audio amp for playback. They consume one tenth the power of a satellite receiver cause they're one tenth as complex. Satellite receivers not only have memory chips, amps, DACs but also complex high-gain satellite receiver chipsets which consume most of the power, i.e. much more electronics inside satellite radios than MP3s. MP3s are not receiving signals from 22,000 miles away. It's a whole different power requirement. It's like comparing an apple to an orange, completely different devices.

The price has to go down before the holiday gift buying season. I have an S-50 but I'd get this if it goes down in price. It would be great to hear live howard while waiting for a flight or going to the beach.

I've heard Alot of bad info about the S50, I wonder if the Stilleto is also as badloy reviewed?

It's not really true that mp3 players are 'simple' (although I agree that sat radio receivers are somewhat more complex); digital audio players are like tiny, portable computers. They have a general purpose CPU, RAM, storage (either flash or a hard drive), display and input buttons. They have to buffer, decode and process audio data while running at very low power levels; 10-12 years ago full size PCs were barely powerful enough to do this in real time.

The main issue here is volume, I think. There are many millions of MP3 players out there while portable satellite radio is still in its infancy. When portable sirius becomes more of a business there will be more incentive to create faster, more efficient reception chipsets that will be cheaper and use less battery power.

The reason for the shorter battery life is because you're receving satellite signals plus it's got a good sized screen. The good news is it has 12 hours of Wifi listening time, and of course you'll be able to listen to Stern over that. Hopefully the next generation of Sirius' chipsets will limit power consumption.

I hope they come out with some kind of car and home kit so I don't have to pay for 2 subs

Agreed. I live by the S50. Just used it for a marathon. It was awesome.

Looks good to me pest

This page on TSS-Radio has indicated that SIRIUS has asked their Authorized Retailers to suspend pre-order of the anticipated SIRIUS Stiletto. Further investigation shows that Crutchfield has also pulled down their Stiletto pre-order page (after going online only a week ago) after being asked to remove it by SIRIUS, Orbitcast has learned.

Initial source checks indicate that this is not a supply issue, though the exact reason as to why SIRIUS Authorized Retailers are being asked to do this is unknown at this time. If I had to take a guess? I'd say a certain four letter organization comes to mind, but there's a dozen or so other possibilities as well.

As more details come in, I'll be sure to make them known.

If they mean the RIAA, I thought Sirius already signed a deal with those guys for licensing the S50 and future units.
merman_93
There are many possibilities for the postponing of pre-orders. TSS still expects the units to arrive in Sept/Oct. They may be including the docking station and slightly increasing the price point now, so postponing pre-orders could make since. If it was RIAA, I believe we'd have heard more.

I'm going to replace my original Sportster (non-replay version, amber and green display is getting funky), but I'm not going to buy a Stiletto until it gets out there in the marketplace and I see some user feedback. Most interesting thing about this unit to me is the ability to upgrade the software via the net.
merman_93
I think the WiFi feature is just incredible. Seeing that Sirius now offers a "Net Only" subscription, I think WiFi compatability will sell many units even outside of the Sat Range. Military guys in Europe have been listening via Internet since the show started streaming, and now I can see more Stern Fans in Europe subscribing to the "Sirius Internet Radio" package, and picking up a Stiletto to listen in "hot spots", (College Campus's, etc.).
PissOnSal
Can you record the whole show when the Sportster unit is Off? Say in the car and you are away?

Maybe as early as a week. I'd get a pre-order in at http://www.tss-radio.com/sirius-sti...pk1-p-3836.html There will be a limited supply initially.

As in the case of the S50 and that whole fiasco, i'll wait a long while before even thinking about the Stilletto. I need to see reviews from fans before I make a judgement about this investment, and at $399 it is an investment.
