TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) -
President George W. Bush charged on Thursday that Democrats would raise taxes if put in control of the U.S. Congress, turning to a familiar campaign theme as he seeks to stave off Republican losses in November.

"If they get control of the House of Representatives, they'll raise your taxes. It'll hurt our economy. And that's why we're not going to let them get control of the House of Representatives," Bush said.
The president's blast was new language for the final seven weeks of the campaign ahead before the November 7 elections and aides said he plans extensive travel to try to help Republicans.
Bush rolled out the attack at an event that raised $450,000 for Republican Gus Bilirakis,

And what about that $300/$600 check from the IRS a lot of us got back early in the first term? Was there anyone out there that was able to spend it to "help the economy"? Unfortunately, my check came and went, right into paying off bills, rent. Would've been nice if I could've saved it, but that wasn't even possible. |

Actually the majority of the tax breaks that Bush speculates would be rolled back went to the top 1 percent, i.e those making $300,000 or more a year. I highly doubt the wingnuts on this board fall into that category and yet they're still willing to vote against their own best interest to finance corporate welfare for the mega-rich and Bush's pals, like the oil companies who continue to receive tax relief despite reaping record profits by gouging the average joe. I think the Bush loyalists believe that one day their blind allegiance will earn them a seat at the table but it won't. They're like the battered wives you see on Jerry Springer that won't leave their husband in hopes that one day he'll change. Pathetic. |

Where are the Republicans on this thread? They can't defend tax cuts during a war.
Borrowing money from the Chinese to pay for the war and while giving tax breaks to the rich.
Now that's sound economic policy.
Looks like the poor and middle class are going to have to pay for this war with their money and their kids. |

Cutting marginal rates increases revenue. It worked in the 60's, worked in the 80's, and its working now. Tax revenue is WAY up due to increased economic activity.

Think of a tax cut as a store holding a sale. Stores hold sales to move more product. As far as government is concerned, the product is economic activity. When taxes are lowered, economic activity increases, which increases the total of tax collected. It's just that simple.
BTW..everyone who paid income taxes received a tax cut...AND will have their taxes increased if the tax cuts are reversed. And the vast majority of taxes are paid by the wealthy. In fact, the bottom 50% of income earners pay almost no income tax at all.

Hey Mjal, the government already operates on the taxes it collects. They do not need to raise our taxes in order to operate. Taxes are supposed to be collected for our government to protect us, not collected to start as many government programs as possible. That is where you liberals get it all wrong. Go back and look at what our founding fathers said taxes should be for. It's you liberals who whine and complain about tax cuts because we are "cutting social programs" Do you realize in most cases that when we hear a social program received "cuts" that it means instead of getting a 15% increase in funding, it only got a 5% increase in funding.
