My Stiletto came in from TSS Radio this week and I've had plenty of time to play with it. My review will be ready shortly but here are some photos to get you all started.
Here's my original post with details about the Stiletto.
I was lucky enough to pick the brain of one fo the Sirius gurus. here's what I've learned.
Q: If I upgrade to the CD Quality internet stream, will the Stiletto be able to pick it up & sound better when in WiFi?
A: No, this is an increasingly common misperception among the early Stiletto users. The WiFi stream supported by the Stiletto is the standard bit rate stream, access to the standard stream comes free with an active satellite subscription. The $2.99 extra is not needed nor supported by the Stiletto at this time. There are plans to support the Higher Quality stream in the future, but at this time Stiletto users get only the standard stream.
Q: Does the Stiletto charge while plugged into the USB cable?
A: The Stiletto will draw some power from the USB when on and not tuned to Satellite, but with Satellite turned on the Stiletto is consuming more power than the USB provides so rather than attempt to calculate what the net gain or loss is, we simply tell users that the Stiletto will not charge from USB.
Q: Does it have a FM Modulator built in?
A: NO, the FM Modulator is in the Car and Home docks and not in the Stiletto Radio itself.
Q: When do the docks come out? I need 2 home and 1 car docks and can't find them yet.
A: First shipments of Car and Home docks will begin reaching retail stores in Mid Oct. Like all things it will be a small volume at first and building through the month. By End of October we expect stores will have plenty of supply.
Q: Are accessories like cases & boomboxes out yet?
A: Accessories are lagging a bit but should be in stores by end of October. The line up of initial accessories includes leather cases, plastic holster w/ belt clip, boombox, and an executive audio system.
You can download the official Stiletto FAQ here.
If you've gotten your hands on one of the new Sirius Stiletto's let us know what you think. |

Here it is with the the regular battery and the ear buds. there's an antenna built into the unit so if you have a good signal or are near a repeater, you'll be able to get satellite with just this. if you are in the office and can't get a signal, you can switch to WiFi and listen to Howard via the online stream. When using the system, you won't notice any difference other than some of the channels aren't available. You'll be able to pick up every channel that you can get with the Sirius streamer.
I was able to connect via WiFi on several networks effortlessly but I did run into some issues on networks with stronger security. If you have trouble, you may need to speak to your network guy. Even though I added the Stiletto to the routers allowed connection list, the unit could not connect. I'll have to work on it a little. The unit can handle password protected networks but can not handle certain pay per use networks that require you to log in through a webpage. |

| This is the extended life battery. The extended-life battery runs for 4 hours in satellite mode, 8 hours in WiFi mode, or 20 hours in MP3 mode. |
|
|
| Mutt |
| Here it is with the antenna headphones. When you are outside you can use these to get the best possible signal. I used them while driving with the top down and felt they worked well. I'll definitely need a car kit though. |
|
|
| Mutt |
| Here's a better look at the antenna headphones. |
|

| Mutt |
Here are the controls. The disc works 2 ways. First, it's a 4 way directional pad like your old nintendo had. Well, I guess that was an 8 way pad but you get the idea.
Up, left & right are for play / pause, forward, & reverse. These can be used for the Tivo functions or for MP3s. Down is the love button. When you are listening to satellite music, if you hear a song you want to save, hit the love button and it will be stored on your Stiletto.
It's also a wheel like your ipod. Spin it to scroll through the channels.
Around the wheel are 4 corner buttons. Since their labeled, I'm assuming I don't have to explain them.
Controlling the thing is easy. Everything is self explanatory. Matter of fact, I haven't even looked at the manual yet. Haven't needed it. |
|
|
| Mutt |
The slide on the top is the power / lock button. It's similar to the lock button on the ipod. Once you get it playing your station, you can lock it so you don't accidentally bump it and change the station.
The button below it is the volume control. |

one of the main questions has not been answered because no one has the car/home adapters yet.... what is the range of the fm transmitter?
I work near a window but am not allowed to stream and do not have wifi access at work... i need to know the range of the fm transmitter to know if it will work.... |
|

| squeecher |
| I have one as well and I gotta say that I am not as hyped about it as Mutt. Although it is a sweet little gadget, there are MANY drawbacks. The absence of a built in FM transmitter truly sucks. The reception is also pretty bad. I was walking around my nieghborhood the other day with it and even in wide open areas it would lose reception. I guess I'll try with the crazy looking antenea headphones next. Another flaw is the fact that the access to put your own MP3's on it only works with Windows XP. As a graphic designer, I have been a Macintosh user for over 20 years. I can't even access the built in flash memory on a Macintosh. Ridiculous. I took a cue from Mutt and ordered my Boombox from TSS. It sucks that it won't be available until 2 weeks from now, but hey, that's new Technology for you. I'm sure there will be something better available from Sirius a year from now. |

| I think it looks like a sweet radio. If I weren't so poor, I'd get it. It sucks that it costs that much and doesn't come with any sort of docking kit at all. I'm sure package deals will come out later though. |

| I picked one up the other day.. I think it was the last fucking one in So-Cal... So far I like it.. Cant get reception with the headphones in the back of a car or in a car so far.. :( that really sucks. I'm hoping they will sell those antena headphones seperate so I can hack them and maybe make them in to a pair of decent headphones.. I like the wifi deal but I notice it does NOT record off of the Wifi stream.. I tried hitting the heart button for a few songs on Octane 20 and got nothing.. :( I'm a mac user so I cant load any mp3's on it but I have an ipod for that.. I'm hoping some of the nerds will make a Mac driver... I am soooo willing to hack this unit ot make it better.. anyone else? |

I feel the same way about the Mac thing. I have an ipod too, but will glady use the stilleto if I can upload songs to it. The battery life alone is a big plus. I don't think Apple has much to worry about as far as this being the "Ipod Killer" everyone thought it would be... |

| I picked one up a few days ago and LOVE it!! I'm near a repeater so I get signal EVERYWHERE, including indoors, outside, in stores around town, in parking garages, even at work where I can't get AM/FM!! For me, this unit is fucking amazing!! |

Hey Guys,
If I want to hear Howard when I'm sweating on the treadmill at the gym...should I be buying the stilletto ? Will I get reception inside the building? What is a repeater?
TIA |
|
|
| sinim |
| Sirius has repeaters in many cities. They transmit a terrestrial signal so that you don't always need open sky to get a signal. If you currently have a sirius, simply bring up the antenna aiming option on the menu and see if you are getting any terrestrial (TER) signal. If you have a strong terrestrial signal outside the gym, then you might be able to get a signal inside. Also, if your gym's building has wireless network so that people can connect to the internet, you can recieve a signal from that using the stiletto. |

I've had it since September, it has its flaws.
The antenna headphones cannot be used as headphones (too painful) so you have to wear them AND use the other headphones.
It puts itself into sleep mode once in awhile (when using wifi).
It doesn't even have a charging indicator!
But, so what? It's not like theres anything else out there to compete with it, im not gonna return it because its not perfect, I will just sell it when something better comes out. |

| Got mine yesterday. Overall it is very nice but I am very disappointed with the reception. I will have to leave it outside at night to record the current show and just be a day behind until the homekit and/or boombox comes out. Why wouldn't these be available at the release of the radio. The reception in general for sattelite has a long way to go. I was working in the yard this morning with the antenna headphones on and would lose reception every 15 seconds. Send San Diego a frickin repeater please |

It should get the same reception as any Sirius antenna does inside. However, if your gym has WiFi, the Stiletto will have a better reception than any other Sirius model. |

glad i just paid 350 bucks for internet radio...golly maybe one day that satellitel feature will work .. no i havent tried turning my head into a antennae

alt.binaries.howard-stern and download the commercial free show to your ipod (or stiletto, I guess..as an mp3). I have 5 paid subscriptions to Sirius, but that's the only way I can catch up to the show in my gym, which is in a basement. I have it in the car, and listen to the internet stream at work, so other than that one gym hitch I'm golden. |

Mutt, thanks for the review. I called TSS this morning and found out my Stiletto preorder will ship out on Monday! Sweet! I'm a little worried about some of these reports about bad reception though. I wanted this radio for two reasons. First of all I want to be able to listen to Howard during my morning run. I've got my fingers crossed that the reception will be good enough with just the earbuds. Secondly, I travel every Tuesday through Thursday so unless I get lucky and get a Hertz upgrade to a car with Sirius, I can only listen to the show (live) on Mondays and the occasional Friday that they work. I'm hoping the radio will work in the car without a car unit so I can just carry the Stiletto with me when I travel so I can listen to the show all week.
I also want to use the MP3 function on planes. HEY MUTT, does the Stiletto turn off the WiFi and satellite reception when the MP3 player is on? I don't think the airlines will allow either function to be active during the flight. |

I would imagine that is the case since the battery level varies depending on what you are listening to... |

ok here it goes.. im not gonna blow smoke up the stilettos ass.
Pros
-its shiny
-Wifi works good
Cons
- it feels flimsy.. when compared to the solid feel of a ipod or Zen
- the internal antenna is a joke.. its nonfunctional . its pointless..sirius might as well have left it out of the unit ..
- the antenna headphones are horrendous .... they might as well put knives on it so i can end it all .. pinch aint the word .. il call em brain tickler headphones
- the antenna headphones SCREAM 1985 il only wear them if i decide to listen to the 80's channel after i bang my head against the wall in frustration from the internal antenna 's reception.
- the battery life is just plain aweful 2 hours on the slim?? my ipod video plays VIDEO for 4 hours with a smaller battery
- it gets hot ..heat = wasted energy which explains the horrible battery life
- 2GB of space?? hello 2 years ago enjoy your stay
- wheres the charging indicator?? my first cell phone 10 years ago had one ... every fuckin thing ive ever plugged in has one ..even my mouse lol
- why cant i get song names or save songs from the internet stream?? its the only thing that fuckin works so why neuter it??
- why does this SHINY EXPENSIVE thing not come with a CARRYING CASE OF SOME SORT?!?!?! WTF even a fuckin pouch
- WiFi works better than the satellite signal which is retarded because this is Satellite radio and not a 350 $ internet radio
overall ok but definately not worth 350$, and seems like it was rushed out 6 months early
Sirius did so much to keep this thing secret that apparently nobody tested this fucking thing to tell them these obvious issues
i wanted this thing to rock sooo badly
il wait until these issues are all fixed in february when a stiletto 150 comes out for $249 lol
this things getting returned ASAP |

let me just say for the last 2 weeks ive been giddy like a schoolboy around my grilfriend who i turned on to sirius about the stiletto .. man i couldnt be more dissapointed ... im thinking of just streaming sirius off a PDa phone w a data connection
much more reliable
imagine how annoyingly often your cell phone dropps calls ... well multiply that by 100 and you got the stiletto ... imagine needing a headset to get a cell signal anywhere! |

but why do they include a internal antenna that doesnt work!??!?!? im not wearing fuckin antenna on my head lol
if sirius sold this as a wifi radio for 150 bucks id give it a A+ cuz its the only thing it does well
i feel like a beta tester thats paying for the right..
BULLSHIT!
it can record songs.. yea when the songs broken up from dropping signal every 5 seconds thats gonna really sound great LMAO |

have you ever gone to the doctor when he sticks that thing to look in your ear?? imagine that one both sides at the same time ..thats what the antenna headphones feel like
and they feel flimsy like theyl snap in half in 4 months |

| OH yea almost forgot even the earbuds cant stay in my fuckin ear for 10 seconds . the ipod or creative ones are fine .. the stiletto earbuds fall out every other minute because theyve got these giant stems that stick out from the earbud itself |

What a fucking dissapointment. I have had this thing for a day and its going back. The flaws may be few, but they are significant:
1. The "antenna" headset is a disaster, both in terms of comfort and sound quality.
2. The reception sucks, including the Wifi.
3. The battery life and storage capacity are unacceptable.
I understand wanting to rush this thing out for the holidays, but I can tell you right now retailers are going to be getting alot of returns. I can't conceive how XM has had portable players for years with built-in antennas and Sirius has to incorporate theirs into a headset.
I love the service, but this device just isnt ready for primetime. :( |

HOLY SHIT..... I really came home from watching football tonight planning to order a stiletto, but I'm not going to now.... jesus, is it that bad?
 |

yes its that fucking bad
like i said after you take the antenna headphones off you feel like theyre still on for 30 minutes afterwards..they push into your head
you CANT RECORD with this fucking thing ..unless you want every fucking song to skip everywhere on the replay
reception is DISGUSTING.. i HELD the head antenna outside my girls car as we drove around .. OUT THE WINDOW POINTED UP with nothing blocking and could NOT get a steady stream for more than 10 seconds
without the head antenna i had trouble in the middle of my street with a perfect view of the sky holding this fucking thing like im the statue of fucking liberty it dropped every 2 seconds i had to call back to activate because it wouldnt stay on long enough to catch the signal
Howard and the gang say it works perfect because it does...in manhattan theres repeaters everywhere .. i live in Western long island and signal drops for no reason standing still itl drop while saying approx 75% signal..WTF
this unti is MINIMUM 6 months from being ready .. it seems like NOBODY tested it outside of manhattan if at all.. definately nobody wore the headset
such SIMPLE fixes too that werent caught because NOBODY FUKING TESTED THIS PROPERLY |
|
|
| BJRasnick |
| Bullshit..... I guess I'll just stick with the IPod and wait for a better model in the future.... damnit, and they had me convinced on the show this morning that I was missing out.... totally disappointed |

im thinking of just getting a motorola Q for verizon with a data plan and streaming sirius over that anywhere i can get a cell signal..like AT WORK lol
i wanted the stiletto to rock..hence the reason i ordered it the 2nd day possible.. but it doesnt
i achieves 50% of everything it says it can..portable..if you dont move....lol |

You're a fucking trolling moron. The stiletto works GREAT for many, many people. It simply depends on your repeater set up. I don't use the antenna headphones and just toss the thing in my backpack and get PERFECT reception not only outside but inside my apartment, inside stores, at work, at the gym- everywhere!!
Anyone interested in the Stiletto should buy one from Best Buy or Circuit City and give it a shot. You have 30 days to return it for a full refund. Reviews about reception are totally meaningless because it's 100% dependent upon YOUR AREA! |
|
|
| kwraph |
I think AREA dependant is the key. If you can afford it get it and see if it will work for you. Mine doesn't work at the gym, on the road (very well) nor in the house without WI-FI (restricted channels). So I got to go back to the downloads. I can pause rewind and I choose not to wake up for the live show. I have to agree it was not ready but the more repeaters the merrier. I may try it in Austin amd move there if it works better! Bababouy to you all...

Hey, Dickus- reception is based on area. I get better reception with my Stiletto than with my AM/FM walkman. I have no problem with you relating your experience but when you post 30 comments about how the Stiletto sucks you're now officially a fucking troll. Have fun at wackbag troll boy. |

Not when Im in a dead zone with no signal, which is a very big possiblity, with the s50 a recorded show will play no matter what, im not willing to take the chance of not being able to have the show, like in the terrestrial days when Youre outta the radio stations range. |

Quote: Originally posted by squeecher I have one as well and I gotta say that I am not as hyped about it as Mutt. |
As to the FM modulator built in. None of the new Sattelite radios come with a wireless modulator, new FCC regulations. they all have to be hard wired into the antenna now. This is true even for the other recievers such as the newer sportsers.
The home kit and the car kit will be available October 20th. |

I live 2 miles from downtown (South Park) and work 3 miles from downtown (Old Town) and my reception is TERRIBLE. I'm not bitching though. I've been recording everything but I could have done that with a S50 |

Or people who work for XM. Posting that you don't like it is an unhappy customer. Posting 30 times that you don't like it is a competitor trying to sabotage a launch. |

| I own one and overall I like it. I just can't wait for the car and home kits to come out. I will be able to listen live again. If you don't believe the reviews, buy one. The reception is horrible. I walk around outside with the painful/ugly antenna headphones with no obstructions and can't keep a solid signal. I bought it at Circuit City last week so I still have 3 weeks to make up my mind. I honestly am bummed that I sold my Sportster/boombox/home kit/car kit to a friend |

Or a pest. As if the Inno is any better. It cut out on me constantly and I ended up selling it (as well as cancelling my XM account) to cover the cost of the Stiletto. |

i preordered mine from sirius one the 2nd day they were taking orders
in order to record songs without breakups eveyr 3 seconds u have to leave the system stationary..which completely makes it un portable |
